    Critically though Russell on that hard tyre, everybody else in the leading five is on the medium compound, so what longevity will that hard tyre give Russell through the end of the race.

    The advantage for Max Verstappen over George Russell is just under four seconds but the reigning world champion is far from comfortable in the Red Bull.

    Lando Norris ran wide at the hairpin, allowing Russell to draw alongside him and catch the McLaren on the straight.

    Max Verstappen leads the Canadian Grand Prix but the three-time world champion is on the team radio to say the performance of the Red Bull may not be as good as it could be.

    Lando Norris is now under pressure from the hard tyres of George Russell and the McLaren can't hold off the attack. Norris is third, Russell jumps back up to second.

    Lando Norris is told to "give it everything" before he heads into the pits to change over to the medium tyres. Max Verstappen is heading down the main straight at the same time the McLaren man is coming out. Who will be in front? It's Verstappen! Norris slips down to second place.

    There is a battle between longevity and tyre warm-up. The medium compound tyre will be much better, the longevity of the hard compound tyre will be better through to the end of the race. The medium tyre will be much quicker in these earlier laps.
