We want [Russell] to be in the fight don't we, we want to see a good fight till the end. This [Mercedes] upgrade has proved useful for them. It hasn't just come out the blue, it's been incremental over the last few races.

  15. Ferrari catching Red Bullpublished at 18:59 British Summer Time 9 June

With no driver on the podium in Monaco and Ferrari celebrating a win and third place, Red Bull's advantage at the top of the constructors' championship is now only 24 points.

Third-placed McLaren are 88 points clear of Mercedes in fourth and Yuki Tsunoda's continued points scoring for RB in sixth means they are 20 points behind fifth-placed Aston Martin.

The gap at the top of the drivers' championship has been cut to 31 points between leader Max Verstappen and second-placed Charles Leclerc, following the Ferrari man's emotional triumph in Monaco last time out.

Sergio Perez's opening-lap misfortune means the Red Bull driver slips down the pecking order and into fifth place, one point behind Carlos Sainz, who finished third on the podium in Monte Carlo.

Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly both finished in the top 10 two weeks ago, with the pair picking up their first points of the season. Williams' Albon secured two points and Gasly, despite his tangle with Esteban Ocon, collected one point.

  19. 'Race likely to be affected by rain'published at 18:55 British Summer Time 9 June

    Andrew Benson
    BBC F1 correspondent

The race looks as if it will be affected to some degree at least by wet weather. After a drenching in the morning, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve had dried, but it started raining during the drivers’ parade and became quite heavy for a while before stopping again. There are said to be pockets of rain dotted all over the place, and predicting whether one or another will hit the track or not is very difficult.

In wet conditions, the teams and drivers will want to be on the intermediate tyre. The wet tyre is simply not good enough, and will be used only if the FIA requires it, such as for a safety-car start. At least some teams hope the race director will be sensible even in the scenario and permit the use of the inter.

In the dry, the race is on the cusp between a one and a two-stop, and strategists will have to work out once the race gets going whether the medium tyre will go long enough to make a medium-hard strategy viable.

A pit stop costs about 19 seconds in green-flag conditions, 11 seconds under a safety car.

McLaren CEO Zak Brown spoke to Rosanna Tennant: "It looks like more rain is coming but not for the entire race, so I think today could be an interesting, exciting, on and off again. I think it's going to be a race that is won on pit wall today.

"We've got a good race car, two great racing drivers surrounded by a bunch of great racing drivers and great race cars so it's going to be a tough race but we've got a chance."
