Northern Ireland's Stephanie Meadow carded a three-over-par 76 in the opening round of the Women's PGA Championship in New York.

The 23-year-old is 10 shots behind leader Jenny Shinn of South Korea.

Meadow bogeyed two of the first three holes at the Westchester course and was five over after 13 holes on Thursday.

A two at the par-three 14th and a four at the last got her back in contention as she steps up her bid to gain full playing rights on the LPGA Tour.

Shin fired five birdies and an eagle in a seven-under-par 66 on Thursday to grab a one-shot first-round lead in the the second major of the LPGA season.

Canadian 17-year-old Brooke Henderson was alone in second place while Australian Hall of Famer Karrie Webb, Thailand's Moriya Jutanugarn and England's Charley Hull shared third on 68.
