  1. Birdies for final group on first holepublished at 14:40 British Summer Time 20 July

    Scheffler -15, Li -11 (1)

Scottie Scheffler's approach is so close to the first hole that he doesn't even need to mark it before tapping in for birdie.

The type of moment that will pierce the balloon of hope of the chasing pack.

Li Haotong mops up from close range too and keeps Scheffler's lead at four.

  2. The play-off holespublished at 14:39 British Summer Time 20 July

Erm, we probably won't need this, but just in case.....

While I don't want to get hopes shooting too high, it's important we discuss the prospect of a play-off.

The R&A's preferred play-off in recent years is for four holes with the lowest aggregate score winning.

The layout at Royal Portrush makes that tricky, so, as was the case should we have needed one in 2019, it will be three holes. The first, 13th and 18th.

Regardless of who you think might be in one, hit those thumbs - up for we're definitely going to extra holes. Down for we don't need extra holes, Rory's got this wrapped up!

  3. Postpublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 20 July

    McIlroy -8, Fitzpatrick -9 (1)

    Matt Gault
BBC Sport NI senior journalist at Royal Portrush

    McIlroy can't quite replicate yesterday's opening-hole fireworks, but he'll take a stress-free par.

Good four for Fitzpatrick, too, after a nervy tee shot.

Like yesterday, it's a scorcher out here. The short sleeves are out and everyone's ready for a big day on the links.

  4. Scheffler and Li poised for opening birdiespublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 20 July

    Scheffler -14, Li -10

Oh, a great approach from Li Haotong to the first - within about six feet of the pin.

And Scottie Scheffler - he's about a foot away! Lands it to the right of the green and the contours bring it back towards the hole.

Talk about a good start. That's incredible.

  5. Early birdie for Henleypublished at 14:35 British Summer Time 20 July

    Henley -7 (3)

A welcome early birdie on the third for Russell Henley, who carded an excellent 65 yesterday.

It takes the American to seven under and right among the chasing pack.

  6. Par startspublished at 14:34 British Summer Time 20 July

    McIlroy -8, Fitzpatrick -9 (1)

Lovely touch from Matt Fitzpatrick with a chip from short of the first green - still can't get my head around his left hand below right chipping style but he really does make it work.

Rory McIlroy has acres to cover with his birdie putt after an overly aggressive approach from 178 yards - and although it's a great effort it's never going in.

We saw a few too many of those yesterday as the major improvement he needs to make for today is to stick his approach shots much, much closer to the flag.

  7. 'Li likes to be the centre of attention'published at 14:34 British Summer Time 20 July

    Scheffler -14, Li -10

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Portrush

I don’t think Li will be scared. He doesn’t lack confidence. He likes to be the centre of attention and it doesn’t get more central than this.

This is why we play the game - you want to be in these situations, you want to test yourself and see what you’re capable of.

This is his time, he’s come back from almost losing his card and he’s now at the prime slot on Sunday at The Open.

He will be wanting to take that trophy home.

  8. Final group under waypublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 20 July

    Scheffler -14, Li -10

Li Haotong steps up first for his opening drive and he's bang in the middle of the fairway.

Now the leader. Scottie Scheffler gets a great reception from those watching around the first tee and the world number one goes slightly left - but he gets a favourable kick which means his ball stays in the semi-rough and doesn't drift into the longer stuff.

    Here's the hole they're tackling...

  9. Postpublished at 14:31 British Summer Time 20 July

    English -8, Gotterup -8 (1)

A nice bunker escape from Harris English finds the green and enables him to then save par, which is matched by Chris Gotterup as they both remain on eight under.

This is a remarkable effort from Gotterup, who only qualified for Portrush by winning the Scottish Open last Sunday and with this not only his Open debut but also his first visit to Northern Ireland.

  10. Where Scottie has separated himselfpublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 20 July

There are a number of areas we could have picked for this.

His putter has been red hot.

He's made the joint fewest bogeys in the field along with Li Haotong (just three).

But actually it's his destruction of the par threes that really stands out.

So far, he's -6 for them this week - and remember one of them is the infamous Calamity Corner at 16.

That's twice as good as the second best.

  12. Hatton bogeys the secondpublished at 14:29 British Summer Time 20 July

    Hatton -8, Schauffele -7 (2)

Disappointment for Tyrrell Hatton, who gives back that birdie from the first on the very next hole.

After finding a bunker off the tee and not being able to advance it too far from there, Hatton gave himself a chance of a five-footer for par - but it didn't drop.

The Englishman back to eight under.

  13. Watch: Scottie too hottiepublished at 14:28 British Summer Time 20 July

  14. Second shot game?published at 14:28 British Summer Time 20 July

    Scheffler -14, Li -10 (14:35 BST)

Graphic that reads 85.2% - Li Haotong has been the best on approach this week, hitting 46 out of 54 greens.

The next best is Tyrrell Hatton with 43 greens in regulation and then Rory McIlroy hitting 42.

If Li Haotong continues to knock it onto the putting surface and give himself chances, he'll stay in with a shout.

By contrast, Scottie Scheffler has only hit 41 greens so far this week.

  15. Smashing day for Sergiopublished at 14:27 British Summer Time 20 July

    Garcia -3 (68)

    Sergio GarciaImage source, Getty Images

An eventful day for Sergio Garcia who shot a 68 despite snapping his driver in anger on the second tee after finding the left rough.

Ironically he went on to make a birdie on that hole, and then four more despite not having a big dog available for the next 16 holes.

    That's some effort.

  16. Postpublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 20 July

    Scheffler -14 (14:30 BST)

Scottie Scheffler, decked out in a blue polo shirt and cream trousers, has completed his final preparations on the range and has about five more minutes to wait before he begins his final round.

  17. Li joins Scheffler in final grouppublished at 14:24 British Summer Time 20 July

    Scheffler -14, Li -10 (14:30 BST)

With the world's top two players, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, in the final two groups, Li Haotong might escape a lot of the glare of many following today's final round.

He's a four-time winner on the DP World Tour and he has Open pedigree.

On debut in 2017, Li shot 63 in the final round to finish third at Royal Birkdale.

  18. Who is 'the most handsome man in China' trying to stop Scheffler?published at 14:24 British Summer Time 20 July

Familiar names dot the leaderboard but Li Haotong from China, who most recently made the cut at The Open in 2018, is Scottie Scheffler's nearest challenger.

His is an unlikely story as he tries to become the first Chinese player to win a men's major.

It's been a rollercoaster career for Li. Third on Open debut in 2017, he almost walked away from golf in 2021 after injuries and a loss of form.

Now, he's heading out in the final group with the world number one.

Li has even been dubbed the "most handsome man in China" in a joke with his club manufacturer - and Phil Mickelson even got involved.

  19. 'Start important for Rory atmosphere'published at 14:23 British Summer Time 20 July

    McIlroy -8

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup on BBC Radio 5 Live

If Rory can get off to a good start, this place will be electric.

If he doesn't get off to a fast start, there might be a bit of a dampening to the atmosphere.

  20. Fairway found on the firstpublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 20 July

    McIlroy -8, Fitzpatrick -9

Rory McIlroy finds the first fairway with the driving iron, as has been the play all week, and it's accompanied with the sort of hefty roar you've now come to expect this week at Royal Portrush.

Matt Fitzpatrick's tee shot is accompanied with almost absolute silence as his ball fizzes out to the left and finds the rough.

"Rory, Rory, Rory" goes the crowd as McIlroy marches off...incredible scenes again.
