Scottie Scheffler on looking for his wife after a win:

"Every time I’m able to win a tournament the first person I look for is my wife Meredith. I didn’t see her at first but then I saw my dad and saw Meredith and she’s always the first person I want to celebrate with.

"She knows me better than anyone, she’s my best friend. I wouldn't be able to do it without her support. It’s not a lifestyle that’s suited to everybody, but we’re very grateful. It’s fun - being able to celebrate tournaments like this."

  7. 'A very special feeling'published at 19:58 British Summer Time 20 July

    Scottie Scheffler wins The Open

Scottie Scheffler on what it means to win The Open:

"It’s a very special feeling. It takes a lot of work to get to this point in my career. This was a tough week - it was challenging. The course was playing really tough. I had to focus very hard over the course of the weekend.

"This one was different from the PGA (in May) because I had a decent lead to start the day. At the PGA, I felt like I struggled on the front nine and then was able to push forward and win it on the back nine.

"This one, I felt like I built up a lead. It got a little close there after the double bogey on eight but as I bounced back at nine I was able to keep a pretty sizeable lead for most of the day."

  8. 'Lucky I get to live out my dreams'published at 19:56 British Summer Time 20 July

    Scottie Scheffler wins The Open

Scottie Scheffler has been asked about some comments he made in his pre-tournament news conference, when he said he sometimes wondered what the point was of winning golf tournaments:

"I think we live in a day and age where clickbait is what people look for and you can shorten a five-minute clip into three words. I think it underestimates what I was trying to communicate. Maybe I didn't do as effective a job as I would have hoped to at communicating that.

"At the end of the day, I have a tremendous amount of gratitude for moments like these. I've worked my entire life to become good at this game and play for a living. It’s one of the great joys of my life to be able to compete out here.

"To be able to win The Open at Portrush is a feeling that's hard to describe.

"I grew up a kid in Texas that wanted to play professional golf. I don't know why I'm so lucky that I get to live out those dreams. It's something I'm very grateful for and if someone's going to listen to those comments this week, I'd encourage them to listen to all of it.

"It's amazing to win The Open but having success in life, whether it's work or golf, is not what fulfils the deepest desires of your heart. This is a cool feeling and I can't wait to get home and celebrate with the people that have helped me along the way. It’s just tough to describe when you haven’t lived it.

"Just because you win a golf tournament doesn’t make you happy - there’s more to life than playing golf. But I'm pretty excited to celebrate this one."

  9. Keys to victory: How Scheffler claimed the Claret Jugpublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 20 July

What were the keys to Scottie Scheffler's brilliant Open Championship victory?

Well, three things provided the bedrock for his success:

    • Limit mistakes: Scheffler led the field in not making bogeys, with just four this week. If you're not going backwards then you've got a decent chance at The Open.
    • Bouncing back: Scheffler dropped shots on four holes - and picked up a shot on the very next hole twice. That was especially crucial in the final round to slam the door shut on his closest challengers.
    • Putting: You need to make putts to win majors and just as a few challengers threw their hats into the ring, Scheffler pulled off three brilliant putts in a row from the fifth-seventh holes to keep things going - making efforts from 14, 16 and 15 feet on consecutive holes to make a birdie and two brilliant par saves.

Put those facets of the game together and Scheffler is one tough cookie to beat on the golf course.

They’re in his shadow. There’s no question about it.

That was an extreme exhibition of ball control, from all sorts of lies.

He is unquestionably the best. I’ve run out of superlatives.

You can nearly start talking about him in the same breath as Woods. When he set these records, you thought no one would be able to come along and challenge them. He's becoming as dominant as Tiger was.

When you listen to players, they almost sound defeated, as if there wasn't a chance to beat him.

The Scottie Scheffler rise has been meteoric in golf terms, and talk about the floodgates opening - he had something of a growing reputation for not being able to close out a tournament, but once he won one, they came in spades.

From his first-ever PGA Tour victory, a play-off success over Patrick Cantlay at the Phoenix Open in February 2022, just a little over three years and five months have elapsed during which Scheffler has won 17 times - including four majors!

    Oh, and the Olympics too!

    Here's his year-by-year wins:

    • 2022: Four wins (Masters)
    • 2023: Two wins (Players Championship)
    • 2024: Seven wins (Masters, Players, Tour Championship)
    • 2025: Four wins (US PGA, Open Championship)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Open winner Scottie Scheffler has been talking with BBC golf correspondent Iain Carter:

"I'm feeling tired, but feeling pretty good. This was a long week but it was a successful one and I did a good job this week of handling myself mentally and I'm fortunate to be here with the trophy.

"I just tried to keep my head down and execute shots, it’s a tough course. You’ve got to be focused and I did a good job of staying focused."

On holding the Claret Jug: "It's hard to put into words right now. I’ll be bringing this one back home with me to have a better look."
