    Fleetwood +4, MacIntyre +1, Rahm +1 (15)

Bob MacIntyre has a long birdie putt on 15 but he's after it immediately and almost beats it to the holeside - he knew it wasn't going to drop as soon as he struck it.

He and Jon Rahm save par but Tommy Fleetwood three-putts from long range and drops a shot further back to four over.

"Argh, this thing's not turning!" exclaims Bryson DeChambeau as his tee shot on the giant par-four 15th heads right - and stays right.

That'll be the seaside wind, Bryson.

    Enjoy the British summer!

    Harman E, Hovland +4, Theegala +7 (13)

For once, Brian Harman is unable to drain a putt from 10 feet and a birdie opportunity slips by for the American.

Viktor Hovland missed from five feet for par and he's back to four over now. Just the one birdie for the Norwegian today, back on the third hole.

  4. Postpublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 18 July

    Aberg +4, DeChambeau +6, T Kim +4 (14)

Tremendous effort from Ludvig Aberg as he chips down the slope on the 14th green, only to see it club the flag stick and stay up. Unfortunate not to get a birdie.

Another birdie putt doesn't drop for Bryson DeChambeau - at least he's still smiling.

  5. Hutsby ties the lead!published at 13:39 British Summer Time 18 July

    Hutsby -3 (7)

Sam Hutsby may be 35 and turned pro in 2009, but this is his Open debut, and in fact major debut, and he's playing it brilliantly so far with three birdies in his first seven holes.

A talented English amateur, Hutsby played alongside Tommy Fleetwood - and against Rickie Fowler and Brian Harman in the Walker Cup - which just goes to show how fine the margins are between those who make the big time and those that just come up short.

Still, a big week here could be a huge boost for Hutsby, who won on the Challenge Tour last year.

  6. Postpublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 18 July

    Hatton E, Homa +4, McIlroy +5 (12)

That's right Catriona, Tyrrell Hatton has got his game where he needs it to stay afloat at the moment.

Seemingly unaffected by the struggles of his playing partners, he's pocketed another par after escaping the bunker at 12.

A settler for Rory McIlroy too as he chips close and tidies up to stop the rot.

  7. 'Hatton battening down the hatches'published at 13:34 British Summer Time 18 July

    Hatton E, Homa +4, McIlroy +5 (11)

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup

Tyrrell Hatton is experienced. You’ve been in these conditions where perhaps your partners aren’t playing the best. It’s that kind of day where you just have to batten down the hatches and hang in there.

That’s what Hatton’s going to be doing – just doing his own thing.

  8. Postpublished at 13:32 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fleetwood +3, MacIntyre +1, Rahm +1 (14)

All three tee shots from the European trio end up at the back of the green.

They all sink their par putts - Jon Rahm was left with the longest of them, from about five feet.

    Four holes to go.

And here's the answers for the last three players to win the Open on their debut, with Tom Watson and Ben Curtis following just a few years ago by Collin Morikawa.

Morikawa, incidentally, won the US PGA Championship on his debut in that event too, so is something of an expert first-time winner. That's some going.

Aberg will need to up his game a bit to join this list though...

    • 1860 - Willie Park Snr (Prestwick)
    • 1873 - Tom Kidd (St Andrews)
    • 1874 - Mungo Park (Musselburgh)
    • 1921 - Jock Hutchison (St Andrews)
    • 1933 - Denny Shute (St Andrews)
    • 1953 - Ben Hogan (Carnoustie)
    • 1964 - Tony Lema (St Andrews)
    • 1975 - Tom Watson (Carnoustie)
    • 2003 - Ben Curtis (St George's)
    • 2021 - Collin Morikawa (St George's)
  10. Another bogey for Abergpublished at 13:29 British Summer Time 18 July

    Aberg +4, DeChambeau +6, T Kim +3 (13)

Strangely timid from Bryson DeChambeau on the 13th green as he weighs up a tempting birdie putt.

Don't underestimate those gusts though and that's partly why his putt comes up short. Five pars in a row now.

Spare a thought for Ludvig Aberg though who has caught the jitters himself. Four bogeys in six for the Swede.

  11. Maverick flying highpublished at 13:28 British Summer Time 18 July

    McNealy -2 (10)

    The OpenImage source, Getty Images

The last Top Gun was on TV last night, and another Maverick that's flying right now is 28-year-old American Maverick McNealy who turned in two under and made par on 10 to stay there.

Much like Tom Cruise in the films, McNealy will want to steer clear of any bogeys and hit the afterburners as he enters the danger zone of this difficult back nine...

Anyway, away from those awful puns, a bit of background.

Fun Fact: McNealy isn't named after Top Gun but rather after the Ford Maverick car, likewise with his three brothers Dakota, Colt and Scout.

Another fun fact: Maverick's dad Scott McNealy is the co-founder of tech giants Sun Microsystems, who were bought by Oracle in 2010 for $7.4billion!

    Harman E, Hovland +3, Theegala +7 (12)

Brian Harman chips to within 10 feet on the par-four 12th and sinks the putt to stay level.

Vintage Harman - it's almost a copy and paste of our coverage from last year!

After having to retake his tee shot, Rory McIlroy needs to hole from off the back of the green just to save bogey.

It's close but still three feet away and he's coughed up a second double bogey in four holes.

Better news for Max Homa as he gets his first birdie of the day.

Anon: With regards to the elder statesmen, past champions in the Open, they should play, they’re earned the right to turn up every year. Let them enjoy what they have earned.

  16. Solid start for Wallacepublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 18 July

    Wallace -1 (70)

You fancy a man named Wallace to do well in Scotland, but it's Englishman Matt Wallace who has enjoyed his day at Royal Troon apart from a bad one on nine where he made a triple-bogey seven.

That came when he was four under through eight and just shows you how this course can bite you if you take your eye off the ball.

Still, one under is a cracking start.

  17. Rahm bogeys the 13thpublished at 13:17 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fleetwood +3, MacIntyre +1, Rahm +1 (13)

Jon Rahm's poor tee shot leads to a bogey that drops him back to one over.

Robert MacIntyre and Tommy Fleetwood mop up for pars, and MacIntyre gets an encouraging hand from the home crowd as he collects his ball from the cup.

Matthew Southgate has finished. He says he has a hot tub at the house he has rented and he's planning to go in it now with a can of pop to relax and watch the rest of the first round.

  19. Postpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 18 July

    Hatton E, Homa +5, McIlroy +3 (10)

We've mentioned how grisly the 11th hole is, with its spectacular setting alongside the railway line.

Sadly for Rory McIlroy, he's swooped his tee shot over the train lines and far into the out of bounds area on the other side.

Dare I say his round has gone a little off track?

    Ludvig AbergImage source, Getty Images

Ludvig Aberg is no ordinary debutant here, teeing it up in his first Open already a Ryder Cup winner with titles on the PGA Tour and DP World Tour.

He'll be joining an exclusive club if he manages to win this week though, with just 10 players in history managing to lift the Claret Jug at the first attempt.

Only five of those have come after World War II and although they're few and far between, the last was only a few years ago.

We'll give you the early ones but can you name the last three??

    • 1860 - Willie Park Snr (Prestwick)
    • 1873 - Tom Kidd (St Andrews)
    • 1874 - Mungo Park (Musselburgh)
