Daniel Brown reflects on the 65 he shot in his very first round in a major that sees him lead the Open by a shot:

"It did get dark out there and got a little bit tricky but the wind dropped as well.

"You've got those bright yellow scoreboards out there so it's hard to miss, but I felt comfortable with my game out there.

"I'm very excited, but you've got to keep your feet on the ground, so I'm just going to go out and do the best I can [tomorrow]."

It's there! Daniel Brown drains his eight-footer on the 18th for a closing birdie that sees him sign for a round of 65 and a one-shot solo lead of the Open Championship in his very first appearance.

The 29-year-old came through qualifying to make his first Open, but he's had the round of his life and gone bogey-free while picking up six birdies and in the closing darkness around Troon we have a new solo leader.

    Brown -5 (17)

Daniel Brown gets a great break off the 18th tee as his drive is heading right out those deep pot bunkers, but it bounces over the trap and leaves him free to attack the green.

he does it brilliantly as well from 170 yards to knock it to eight feet - so he'll have a putt to take the outright Open lead coming up...

  7. Scheffler on tough conditionspublished at 21:26 British Summer Time 18 July

Scottie Scheffler revealed that conditions changed so much today that there was as much as a 50-yard difference to his regular shots:

"When you get a wet ball into the wind, it's amazing how short it goes. I think it was number two today, I had 165 to the pin off a slight upslope, and I hit a hold 5-iron, which for me usually goes about 205.

"It went probably 155 at the most. Probably carried 150, and ended up 155, and I striped it.

"The slight upslope had something to do with that, but I mean, I flighted it down pretty good, and it's my 205 shot, and it went 155."

Daniel brown plays the 17th beautifully, finding the green and giving himself a 20-foot birdie look but more crucially a stress-free par to send him down the last holding a share of the lead in the Open.

    What a story.

Tiger Woods says physically he's improving and hopes to play more next year:

"I'm physically feeling a lot better than I did at the beginning of the year. At the end of last year, it was tough, and I haven't played a whole lot. I think that, as the year has gone on, I have gotten better.

"I just wish I could have played a little bit more, but I've been saving it for the majors just in case I do something pretty major and then take myself out of it. Hopefully next year will be a little bit better than this year.

"I thought I could play a little bit more earlier in the year. I think I was a little bit too optimistic. I need to do a lot more work in the gym and keep progressing like we have."

And there it is! Daniel Brown rolls it in from 12 feet and although most of the fans have long gone, there's still some supporters out there for him to cheer him on - and he's making the most of it.

Daniel Brown is wayward with his approach to the par-five 16th and ends up in some tricky wispy grass, but he chops it out nicely and still leaves himself with a makeable birdie try.

Xander Schauffele on playing partner Tiger Woods' struggles:

"I mean, he's only playing major championships. He's making it as hard on himself as possible, and I know he's hard on himself too. It's just hard. I think he's just learning. He's got to learn a little bit more about his body, what he can and can't do.

"I'm sure he'd like to prep more at home if his body would allow it. I'm not sure he tells you guys this stuff or not. But as a tour pro now, I kind of know what goes into it and what needs to be done to play at a high level.

"If your body is not letting you do it, it's just frustrating. I'm sure he's trying to figure that out."

Dan Brown made his par on 15 despite leaving himself a real tester from about five feet, but he passed that test with flying colours.

He's now found the fairway on the par-five 16th and will look to try and pick up a shot here on what's the easiest hole on the course today.

Xander Schauffele on his tactics for getting around Royal Troon in tough conditions:

"It's a funny one. You start off with five or six holes into the wind. I was lucky to be under-par there. If you're over-par early, it's just being patient and feeling the need to chase, especially on a Thursday, is a difficult thing.

"Austin and I, we came up with a good plan. It's cliche, but really just kind of plotted around the property."

  16. Dean looking to deliverpublished at 20:41 British Summer Time 18 July

    Dean -2 (16)

Another great story at the Open, Sheffield's Joe Dean has worked as a supermarket delivery driver while a pro, but is now driving his way up the leaderboard after a birdie on 16.

It should have been an eagle really after a wonderful approach left just eight feet, but he missed the putt and had to settle for birdie.

And at two under Dean's just three shots off the lead.

We're still playing folks despite the gloom starting to take over around Royal Troon - with Daniel Brown still out on the course and hoping to try and join Shane Lowry at the top of the leaderboard.

He's just in the semi-rough on 15 but with only 160 yards to the flag to go.

We'll bring him home for you and also bring you some of the post-round reaction from the players so keep it right here...

Despite such a disappointing round, Tiger Woods still hopes to make the cut at Troon:

"I didn't do a whole lot of things right today. I made that putt on the 3rd hole, and then I think I had, what, three 3-putts today.

"I didn't hit my irons very close, and I didn't give myself a whole lot of looks today.

"I need to shoot something in the mid-60s tomorrow to get something going on the weekend."

Shane Lowry insists he's "trying not to think about it too much" as he leads the Open for the first time since winning the Claret Jug at Portrush in 2019.

"Actually I holed a putt out there today and I thought that's the first time I've led the Open for five years," he told Sky Sports.

"I love this tournament and I'd dearly love to give myself a chance to win it again.

"If I can keep holing putts I can be dangerous, so we'll see what happens."
