  1. Harman bogeys 15published at 14:13 British Summer Time 18 July

    Harman +1, Hovland +4, Theegala +7 (15)

An error off the tee from Brian Harman proves costly and the defending champion has to sign for a bogey five on the 15th.

He's got a decent chance of getting that shot back on the next hole, though.

  2. 'Trying to stay even keel' - Thomaspublished at 14:11 British Summer Time 18 July

    Thomas -3 (68)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Clubhouse leader Justin Thomas was talking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Andy Stevenson:

"Any time you can shoot under par, let alone in the 60s first round of a major - it’s great. It was tough out there this morning.

"There’s a lot of variables that you can’t control on links golf and I feel like over 72 holes you’re going to have some things not go the way you want and I’m just trying to stay as even keel as possible."

On whether he feels he improves or learns something every time he playes links golf:

"I would argue I would play links golf for the rest of my life over any kind of golf in the world but my track record doesn’t exactly show that.

"It’s a part of it. Some of it is not playing well the times we’ve had it, a couple of bad draws here and there.

"It’s the way that it is but just trying to enjoy it, embrace it and make the most of it."

  3. Koepka heads trio of major winnerspublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 18 July

Former major champions Brooks Koepka, Wyndham Clark and Hideki Matusyama are playing together in the 14:26 BST three-ball on day one.

Five-time major winner Koepka has the best Open record of the trio, finishing in the top 10 on four separate occasions.

  4. Postpublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fleetwood +4, MacIntyre +1, Rahm +1 (15)

The par-five 16th is reachable in two, as demonstrated by all three players in this group.

Robert MacIntyre and Tommy Fleetwood are both over the back of the green, while Jon Rahm is short and right of the putting surface.

  5. Difficult start for Elspublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 18 July

    Els +5 (5)

These Open courses don't respect former champion golfers. Todd Hamilton and Justin Leonard, out in the opening group, finished in a combined 20-over and now Ernie Els has had a time of it up the fourth.

The 2002 and 2012 winner crossed off native area (twice), fairway bunker, greenside bunker and missed putt on his bingo card to leave the par five - the second easiest hole today, incidentally - with a triple bogey.

  6. Postpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 18 July

    Hatton E, Homa +6, McIlroy +5 (14)

He's not made a putt inside between five and 10 feet yet today but the 14th would be a good time for Rory McIlroy to find his range.

In. Relief for Rory and he moves onto the 15th.

On the other side of the green, Tyrrell Hatton has a presentable birdie chance but can't find the bottom of the cup.

  7. All eyes on Tigerpublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 18 July

    Cantlay, Schauffele, Woods (14:37 BST)

At the age of 48, Tiger Woods continues to be one of the biggest draws at any major golf tournament.

His 23rd appearance at The Open is about to begin in the next half an hour or so. Can he make the cut this time?

  8. Selected late tee timespublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 18 July

    All times BST

So here's the pick of the late wave of tee times for the 152nd Open at Royal Troon.

You can find a full list of the first-round and second-round tee times here but here are a few names to look out for coming up:

    • 14:26: Wyndham Clark, Brooks Koepka, Hideki Matsuyama
    • 14:37: Patrick Cantlay, Xander Schauffele, Tiger Woods
    • 14:48: Collin Morikawa
    • 14:59: Matthew Fitzpatrick, Shane Lowry, Cameron Smith
    • 15:10: Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth
  9. Postpublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fowler +2 (2)

Two holes down and Rickie Fowler is already two over after scrawling a nasty six on his card. A fairway bunker did for him down the second. He's joined the long list of grumpy golfers out on the links.

  10. No respite at Troonpublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 18 July

    Aberg +4, DeChambeau +7, T Kim +3 (15)

Every hole so far today is playing over par bar the 16th, which is a tiny amount under par.

It's been a brutal day at Royal Troon so far.

And that's where Bryson DeChambeau's group is headed next.

  11. Wild end for Dalypublished at 14:02 British Summer Time 18 July

    Daly +11 (82)

    John DalyImage source, Getty Images

We talked about past champions getting such long exemptions to play in the Open earlier, and one of the most recognisable, John Daly, has just taken eight at the last to finish 11 over for his first round.

The 1995 champion at St Andrew's can still draw a crowd but not necessarily for the quality of his golf these days.

  12. Hutsby 'ecstatic' to be at The Openpublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 18 July

    Hutsby -1 (8)

As mentioned earlier, it's taken a little longer than most for England's Sam Hutsby to make his first appearance at The Open.

"It's taken me nearly 20 years to qualify for The Open and to finally do it is such an incredible feeling," Hutsby, 35, told BBC South Today.

"The hard work and sacrifice I put in is for moments like this; I'm ecstatic to be here."

  13. Birdie for Kim, bogey for DeChambeaupublished at 14:01 British Summer Time 18 July

    Aberg +4, DeChambeau +7, T Kim +3 (15)

Finally, a birdie for this trio as Tom Kim finds his range from 18 feet.

Just in the interests of balance, Bryson DeChambeau's eight footer is wayward and he coughs up his first shot since the eighth hole.

He's 10 behind Justin Thomas - we didn't see that coming.

  14. 'A special event for me'published at 14:00 British Summer Time 18 July

    Rose -2 (69)

    Justin RoseImage source, PA Media

England Justin's Rose after shooting a two-under 69 for a share of second: "I've been around long enough to know that I can [win]. I know how I'm feeling in the moment and I've been pretty good in my career at sort of winning the special ones.

"That's kind of what I've been really working hard for the last two, to three years is to have the opportunity late in my career to have a couple of special amazing opportunities. That's what's keeping me going."

On the importance of The Open: "Obviously it's a special event for me being a Brit. It's the one I've dreamed about winning ever since I was a kid, so obviously you've got to be in it to win it. That was the first part of the jigsaw puzzle was to make sure I qualified."

On having to qualify: "Just a bit more gratitude just to be here. Twenty-ish years where you make your schedule in December and you go, OK, Masters, Open, US Open, PGA, how do we plan around that? This year it's like, hang on a second, I'm not guaranteed in the Open or the US Open at that point, either.

"I had to do a little bit of extra hard work just to make sure I was here."

  15. Postpublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 18 July

    Harman E, Hovland +4, Theegala +7 (14)

The defending champion is going about his business with the minimum of fuss in this first round.

Brian Harman is at the back of the green after his tee shot on 14, but he gets within 10 feet and succeeds with his par attempt.

Four consecutive pars after a birdie at 10 for the American.

  16. Postage Stamp strikespublished at 13:56 British Summer Time 18 July

    Hutsby -1 (8)

Well, we jinxed Sam Hutsby didn't we? He was going along serenely until his tee shot at the Postage Stamp found the right bunker, from where he followed Rory McIlroy's example and saw his first attempt roll back into the wet Troon sand.

The debutant does well to settle and escapes second time, but it's a two-putt from there and a double-bogey five. You just can't get greedy on this short eighth hole, just get out of these bunkers and take your medicine...

  17. Postpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 18 July

Not sure I agree with you Rich (13:52) on Rory doing Rory things. It'd be more like him to be up there contending.

Seems like a day to dig in and not let your score run away too far.

Plenty of golf left in this tournament.

  18. Mickelson starting soonpublished at 13:53 British Summer Time 18 July

The Open champion in 2013, Phil Mickelson almost won the Claret Jug for a second time when the event was last held at Royal Troon in 2016.

It was not for the want of trying, as only an inspired Henrik Stenson denied Mickelson further Open success.

Mickelson is due out shortly alongside former US Open and Masters champion Dustin Johnson.

Rich in Liverpool: Rory continues to do Rory things. Seems like a potential repeat of his first round at Portrush! Within 12 holes his major chances for another season looking bleak at best.

  20. Postpublished at 13:52 British Summer Time 18 July

    Hatton E, Homa +4, McIlroy +5 (13)

A perfect drive from Rory McIlroy down the 13th but his approach is slightly short and leaves a tough 28-footer for birdie.

On pace but off line so he's settling for par. He swishes his club with a smidge of frustration.
