As the players leave the ninth green, they’re within a Bryson DeChambeau spank of Prestwick Airport. Given the way the American’s opening round is unfolding, he might be considering just heading straight for the tarmac…

  2. 'DeChambeau has no momentum'published at 11:54 British Summer Time 18 July

    Graeme Storm
Two-time European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

DeChambeau aimed for the flag at the Postage Stamp eighth green. He hit a massive, mighty draw high into the dark grim sky and managed to get it within 20 yards of the green and then made an awful mess of it, chipped it onto the green way past, and missed the putt.

Same old, same old. He’s just not got any momentum.

Another missed shot for Bryson DeChambeau as his lengthy par putt stays up.

    It keeps getting worse.

A dropped shot for Ludvig Aberg too after waywardness off the tee.

Andrew: Bryson DeChambeau five over through the opening seven holes, on what are also considered by many to be the easiest scoring holes at Royal Troon. Further proof, if it were needed, that links golf is a different test altogether.

Simon in north Yorkshire: Best sound? The sound of a ball landing on a firm-ish green, slightly out of sight, from a well-struck wedge.

    In for Rory McIlroy.

But for par, after his birdie attempt stayed short.

It's the same for Tyrrell Hatton and Max Homa makes a bogey - nothing much happening for this trio at the moment.

The iconic par-three eighth at Royal Troon.

"As full of wickedness as it is beauty," wrote author Henry Leach more than a century ago.

As Bryson DeChambeau flashes a tee shot into the native area behind the green, he's no doubt feeling similar.

There is not a seat to be had in the grandstand behind the eighth tee and the queues stretch back a long, long way.

One marshal is busy texting his wife to tell her not to bother even trying.

He explains that they had barriers over the entrances overnight but that, when they arrived at 07:30, scores of punters had either vaulted them or simply moved them aside. It’s the place to be.

    Hatton E, Homa +2, McIlroy E (5)

We've not heard about Rory McIlroy for a while, but that's mainly because he's been plotting his way down the mammoth sixth hole.

On to the green and has 14 feet for birdie to get into the red.

He and Tyrrell Hatton will be lining up near-identical putts shortly.

  9. Six-way tie for the leadpublished at 11:45 British Summer Time 18 July

That bogey for Justin Thomas has brought a host of players into a share of the lead.

Americans Russell Henley and Chris Kirk are up to -2 while South Korea's Min-kyu Kim has opened with birdies at holes one and two.

  10. Birdies for Rahm and Fleetwoodpublished at 11:44 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fleetwood +2, MacIntyre E, Rahm E (8)

Very, very nicely done by Jon Rahm and Tommy Fleetwood, who roll in their birdie putts on the eighth - their first birdies of the day.

Bob MacIntyre can't make it a hat-trick, though, and the Scot has to settle for a par to remain even for his round.

  11. Theegala falling backpublished at 11:42 British Summer Time 18 July

    Harman E, Hovland E, Theegala +3 (6)

Sahith Theegala, the world number 11, follows a double bogey on five with a bogey on the long par-five sixth.

Brian Harman and Viktor Hovland are on the front of the green in three and end up with pars.

  12. Another bogey for Thomaspublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 18 July

    Thomas -1 (13)

Two difficult holes later and Justin Thomas' lead has disappeared.

He's slightly overcooked his wedge into the 13th hole and left himself a gnarly 21-footer for par.

It's missed and another shot given back to the field.

  13. Postpublished at 11:39 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fleetwood +3, MacIntyre E, Rahm +1 (7)

Superb tee shots on the Postage Stamp from three members of Europe's successful Ryder Cup team in Rome last autumn, all within 15 feet.

Can any of them take advantage?

Safe to say the reception Bob MacIntyre received on the eighth is the loudest we’ve had in this wee amphitheatre at Ayr-men Corner all morning.

    Fleetwood +3, MacIntyre E, Rahm +1 (7)

Yes, Robert MacIntyre absolutely monstered a 345-yard drive to within 50 yards of the pin on the par-four seventh. If there's some anger in Bryson DeChambeau's tee shot there soon, he might end up going over the back of the green...

Anyway, MacIntyre's approach is within six feet but his birdie putt lips out! He's left a couple out there early on.

Pars also for Jon Rahm and Tommy Fleetwood.

The longest hole in Open championship history (620 yards) has had its way with Bryson DeChambeau and he looks dejected as he trudges off the sixth green.

A horribly-played hole ends with a double bogey and the American is now up to five over for the tournament.

It'll be some recovery if he can get back in contention from here.

Christiaan Bezuidenhout has just got himself into an almighty fankle trying to remove his waterproof trousers. The South African looked like he was doing an especially violent can-can as his heel got caught in the leg.

We’ve all been there, big man…

An update on Justin Rose who is ticking along nicely and has a share of the lead.

He's just placed his tee shot on the 14th safely into the heart of the green.

Two under is looking a good score right now.

  20. 'Fleetwood's putter is cold'published at 11:26 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fleetwood +3, MacIntyre E, Rahm +1 (6)

    Andrew Murray
Former European Tour winner on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'm such a Tommy Fleetwood fan and especially in the brisk wind, he’s a great wind player, and has got great ball control.

He’s just lost it left on two occasions with the wind on the right, he’s found a couple of nasty lies in the rough and a couple of pot bunkers. He's hit pretty good bunker shots out but not holed the putts.

His putter is cold, it has to be said.
