While locals will undoubtedly tell me that it's about as benign a day as you could hope to find on the links, there are plenty of umbrellas up with fans sheltering from the rain.

The Scots have around 100 words to describe the conditions out here and while it's not exactly stoating right now, it's still dreich.

The wind, unusually for Troon, is still hindering on the way out and helping on the way in.

  2. Thomas double bogeys 12published at 11:23 British Summer Time 18 July

Contending at a major is all about limiting your mistakes, and then when you make them about how you recover.

It looked like JT had done it perfectly, clipping his fourth shot to four feet and setting up for bogey.

But then he misses - that's a big mistake.

Didn't see that double bogey coming.

  3. Noren early clubhouse leaderpublished at 11:22 British Summer Time 18 July

    Noren -2 (69)

    Alex NorenImage source, PA Media

The first group teed off at 06:35 BST - while most of us were in bed - so the early starters are now finishing.

Swede Alex Noren is the clubhouse leader on two under, the only one of the early crew to finish under par.

Justin Leonard, Open winner in 1997, hit the first shot of the championship and finished his round nine over.

  4. Bogeys all roundpublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 18 July

    Harman E, Hovland E, Theegala +2 (5)

If you miss the greens here, all sorts of trouble lurks...

Exhibits A, B and C - Brian Harman, Viktor Hovland and Sahith Theegala fail to find the short grass from the tee on the par-three fifth and are left with lengthy par putts, which are all missed.

    DeChambeau +3 (5)

What is happening with Bryson DeChambeau? He's in the jungle at six off the tee and tries to muscle it out, only to watch it go nowhere.

    That's a big mistake.

Facing the same shot, he escapes this bit of rough but his ball still flies way off line and you can see from his reaction, he's running hot and not in a good way.

The US Open champ, so good at majors so far this year, is in a real pickle.

  7. From wine to water...published at 11:17 British Summer Time 18 July

    Richard Winton
    BBC Scotland at Royal Troon

Just watched a gentleman in the grandstand at the eighth be instructed to dispense of his little bottle of white wine. He’s not a happy camper as he watches it glug down the steps…

    Thomas -4 (11)

Now then, trouble for Justin Thomas at the par-four 12th.

He’s way left off the tee and has to take a drop. His third shot out of the rough is completely blind and comes up 50 yards short of the hole.

He’ll need to chip that in to save par.

  9. Postpublished at 11:17 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fleetwood +3, MacIntyre E, Rahm +1 (6)

The par-five sixth, the longest hole in Open history, is definitely three shots to the green in these conditions.

Jon Rahm's third from 120 yards lands just beyond the pin and spins back to within seven feet.

Can the Spaniard get his first birdie of the day? No he can't - slips by the left of the cup.

Tommy Fleetwood can't get up and down from a bunker and is back to three over now - not the greatest of starts for Southport's finest.

Dressed all in black, Rory McIlroy is taking his time over this 18 footer for birdie.

He sends it on its way but it shaves the edge of the hole and stays up.

From a similar position, Tyrrell Hatton gives it a tickle but it's not strong enough. Par.

    Aberg E, DeChambeau +3, T Kim +1 (5)

It's entertaining but not pleasant for this marquee trio at the moment.

For the first time, Bryson DeChambeau will be the happiest as he heads to the tee box.

He's made par at the fifth while Ludvig Aberg and Tom Kim card bogeys.

    Tricky conditions at Troon currently.

  12. Harman birdies par-five fourthpublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 18 July

    Harman -1, Hovland -1, Theegala +1 (4)

The shot map for this three-ball on the 600-yard fourth hole looks a bit like a Jackson Pollock painting.

Sahith Theegala went way left with his tee shot, then went bunker-hopping by the green on his way to a double-bogey seven.

Viktor Hovland went way left with his second shot but recovers to save par.

Defending Open champion Brian Harman kept his ball on the short grass throughout and is rewarded with a birdie.

  13. Postpublished at 11:04 British Summer Time 18 July

    Thomas -4 (11)

Getting out of the 11th at Royal Troon with a par is always a result and leader Justin Thomas has done just that.

He remains two shots in front of the chasing pack.

We're deep into the guts of a sensational summer of sport and BBC presenter Mark Chapman has hot-footed it from Germany to Scotland to lead the coverage on BBC Radio 5 Live.

He's been chatting about a certain Rory McIlroy with The Guardian's Ewan Murray:

“[Rory] is easy to like and I think this major run is part of it.

"The longer he goes on without winning a major, which people think he deserves, he will pull more support.

"St Andrews was a great example of that and there’ll be more of that this week, especially in the UK and when he plays in Ireland. That forms part of why people root for him. People want him to add to his major tally.

"Tom Kite was known for years as one of the greatest players of his generation who hadn’t won a major but that was OK – he was happy with his career. He won the US Open in 1992 and immediately said ‘I’ve been lying to the media for all these years. This was tearing me up inside, this hurt me and finally I can say I’ve won one.’

"I wonder if and when Rory wins major number five he will unburden himself in that respect and say ‘yes, this was torturing me mentally, this was really hard’ and he can do it then, but until that point he cannot allow himself to go into the negativity of how much this is bogging him down, not adding to the four majors."

    Fleetwood +2, MacIntyre E, Rahm +1 (5)

Tommy Fleetwood and Jon Rahm land their tee shots in the same greenside bunker on five.

Rahm's escape from the sand is a peach, leaving him almost a tap-in for par.

Fleetwood sends his 20-footer for par just wide of the hole and drops another shot, while Robert MacIntyre can't sink his par putt from six feet and also bogeys this par three.

  16. McIlroy back to level parpublished at 10:55 British Summer Time 18 July

    Hatton E, Homa +2, McIlroy E (3)

    Here comes Rory McIlroy.

That’s an outstanding wedge, dialled straight at the flag stick and coming up less than four feet from the pin.

He’s followed in by Tyrrell Hatton who was penalised for the creek but has his own majestic wedge play to thank for escaping with par.

Oh dear. That's a miss from inside four feet and Bryson DeChambeau is sliding.

Inches from a birdie for Ludvig Aberg who was unfortunate that spin stole his excellent third shot away from the hole.

Tom Kim tucks home a bounceback birdie to climb to level par.

The fourth was the easiest hole when The Open last came to Royal Troon. Could it get Bryson DeChambeau's round going?

Well he misses the green but can still putt from the fringe. He leaves himself four feet to save par.

  19. Daly still got it despite tough startpublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 18 July

    Daly +3 (8)

He might be shuffling around looking a little lost, but former champion John Daly still has a bit. A splendid flick of the wrists on eight should set up a birdie but the putt just slides past.

    Harman E, Hovland -1, Theegala -1 (3)

Three outstanding approach shots to the third green from this trio, who are all left with putts within 10 feet for birdie.

Brian Harman, the master putter of the 2023 Open, misses out but Sahith Theegala and Viktor Hovland make no mistake and are both now one under.
