Another 20-foot putt drops and Shane Lowry is into the lead!

    Outstanding.

  2. Postpublished at 18:11 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fitzpatrick E, Lowry -3, Smith +7 (10)

Shane Lowry is playing the ideal round of golf here - keeping the ball in play, leaning on his short game when he's slightly out of position, and putting very well.

He's gone bogey free through the first 10 holes and after a wait on the 11th tee, he's got a 20-footer left for another birdie and the outright lead.

I don't want to be a doom monger but this looks like the beginning of the end for Tiger Woods, as he tugs his approach on 12 left and almost into the crowd.

The snarl he gave after the shot, and slump in the shoulders as he trudged up to the green to inspect his lie all hinted that he'd rather be anywhere else right now than at Royal Troon...

  4. Watch: Montojo's dream startpublished at 18:06 British Summer Time 18 July

As starts to major tournaments go, teenage Spanish amateur Jaime Montojo had a pretty good one on the first by holing his 132-yard second shot for eagle...

  5. Triple-bogey for Clarkpublished at 18:00 British Summer Time 18 July

    Clark +8, Koepka -2, Matsuyama +3 (12)

Wyndham Clark is having a first round to forget.

He sends his tee shot way right and has to have another go, eventually ending up with a triple-bogey seven.

Hideki Matsuyama misses a five-footer for his par, but Brooks Koepka makes his.

  6. Double for Woodspublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 18 July

    Cantlay E, Schauffele -3, Woods +6 (11)

After almost hitting it onto the rails, Tiger Woods' game has gone off the rails now with a double-bogey six at the 11th dropping him back to six over.

This is becoming a sadly familiar story for Woods this year as he shows us just a glimpse before his round, and tournament starts to unravel.

  7. Schauffele has the X-factor!published at 17:55 British Summer Time 18 July

    Cantlay E, Schauffele -3, Woods +4 (11)

Xander Schauffele continues to make serene progress sprinkled with some magic - such as this 35-footer on the 11th to birdie one of the most difficult par fours on the entire Open rota.

That puts the US PGA champion in a tie for the lead and he's been under absolute no pressure whatsoever today.

  8. Spieth being Spiethpublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 18 July

    Scheffler E, Spieth +1, Young +1 (9)

Jordan Spieth is off the reservation again on 10, wild and into the thick rough off the tee, then he tries to get creative with his approach but it pops up and floats into more rough still about 40 yards short.

  9. Postpublished at 17:48 British Summer Time 18 July

    Cantlay E, Schauffele -2, Woods +4 (10)

The good news is they've found Tiger's ball, the bad news is that it's in the bushes so he has to take a drop, before just bunting the ball along the fairway well short of the green.

At least one shot will be going here...

  10. Lowry saves par in stylepublished at 17:46 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fitzpatrick E, Lowry -3, Smith +7 (10)

Shane Lowry has 25 feet left for par and looks in danger of a dropped shot on 10 - not a bit of it!

A punch of the air from the Irishman as he remains in a share of the lead.

Matt Fitzpatrick bogeys the hole though, and drops back to even par.

  11. 'McIlroy in grim major battle after another tale of woe'published at 17:46 British Summer Time 18 July

Rory McIlroy dejectedImage source, PA Media

To say Rory McIlroy's first round at The Open didn't go to plan would be an understatement.

A stumbling, disconsolate 78 that summoned memories of Portrush in 2019 - the only logical response to that query is ‘not this year’.

BBC Scotland's chief sports writer Tom English is at Royal Troon and has documented McIlroy's day with typical panache.

  12. Woods out of boundspublished at 17:40 British Summer Time 18 July

    Cantlay E, Schauffele -2, Woods +4 (10)

The 11th hole is scary! The trainline running all the way down the right of it is far too close for comfort for most of us.

And amazing, Patrick Cantlay decides to go through with his tee shot just as a train whizzes by on the tracks, resulting in him slicing it a bit into the rough.

Tiger Woods carves it even further though and it looks like he's hit it out of bounds, so it's the dreaded reload on the tee box for him. As always it's almost perfect the second time around.

  13. A chance to shinepublished at 17:39 British Summer Time 18 July

Yes, scoring has been very difficult out there today.

But we now have 10 players queued up on two under, one shot behind leaders Justin Thomas and Shane Lowry.

Of those 10, six are out on course - can one of them make themselves the overnight leader?

  14. Another Koepka birdiepublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 18 July

    Clark +5, Koepka -2, Matsuyama +2 (11)

Brooks Koepka is in excellent form with the putter today.

Another birdie putt drops, this one from about 15 feet, and the American is back within one shot of the leaders.

He's four over through 10 holes, it's cold, it's wet, his body is pinned together with metal and a bone fusion in his ankle, so can Tiger Woods possibly make the cut at The Open?

Tiger started pretty well, but it's a familiar story this year of just not being sharp enough around the greens as he walks the tightrope of playing too much and breaking down and not playing enough and being rusty.

Can he make the weekend at Troon though? Vote with your thumbs or get in touch.

  16. Postpublished at 17:29 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fitzpatrick -1, Lowry -3, Smith +7 (9)

Shane Lowry's approach to the ninth green is just a couple of yards off line and it feeds off to the right, leaving a tricky up-and-down for par.

He chips to about eight feet and completes the job with the flat stick.

On the other hand, Cam Smith wants this round to be over as quickly as possible - he's gone out in a seven-over 43.

  17. Postpublished at 17:26 British Summer Time 18 July

    Cantlay E, Schauffele -2, Woods +4 (10)

Brilliant drive from Tiger Woods on 10, hoisting it high and left and riding the wind to slide it to the right in position A++ on the fairway.

But it's a below average wedge and he just has to two-putt for par.

Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele also make fours after they both visit the right rough.

  19. Troublepublished at 17:16 British Summer Time 18 July

    Scheffler E, Spieth E, Young +2 (7)

This will be interesting... Scottie Scheffler dices with danger by going for the flag on the Postage Stamp and his ball tumbles off into the right bunker, while Jordan Spieth comes up short and has a shocker of a lie as the ball trickles into the back of the front bunker.

The Americans pay the price for taking full swings and sending the ball high into the Ayrshire sky when the best shots here today have been low punched wedges in - see Darren Clarke and Shane Lowry.

Scottish Open champion Bob MacIntyre has put himself very much in the mix at The Open, just four behind the clubhouse lead, and was talking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Andy Stevenson:

On his round: "I thought I played superbly from tee to green today. Only missed maybe three or four greens, max, It was difficult, obviously a lot of cross-winds - that’s what Troon’s renowned for.

"For the third time playing Troon, I thought (we) did a good job, me and Mike (Burrows, MacIntyre’s caddy).

"The club selections we had off the tees were really good and I just thought it was a solid round of golf."

How important was that final birdie putt on the 18th? "It was huge for confidence going into tomorrow. I felt like I missed every putt I looked at today, apart from maybe on the third, where I made a birdie.

"I played what I thought was almost flawless from tee to green. I thought on the front nine I had a lot of putts on that 12-foot range that didn’t go in but that’s golf. Last week they were all going in."

What effect has winning the Scottish Open had in terms of having time to practice? "We’ve pitched up on Tuesday with nothing to do with media and I got back down to work, and tried to recover as well as I could.

"Obviously yesterday doing the media stuff, but I am here to try to win a golf tournament again.

"Every tee I walked on, every fairway I walked on, every green I walked on, the fans’ support has been incredible and I can’t thank everyone enough."

On the weather: "I’m a west coast Scotland boy, we’re playing on the west coast of Scotland. This is the weather you can expect. I’m actually been surprised it’s been as dry as it has."
