  1. Brooks gets one backpublished at 15:35 British Summer Time 18 July

    Clark E, Koepka +1, Matsuyama E (4)

Better from Brooks Koepka, who leaves himself a pitch and a putt from 85 yards to make birdie on the fourth and get back to one over.

  2. Postpublished at 15:34 British Summer Time 18 July

    Scheffler +1, Spieth E, Young E (1)

The second hole is just 396 yards today, that's usually just a driver and a tiny flick with a wedge for the big-hitting PGA Tour pros, but not today...

Windy conditions at Royal Troon mean that Jordan Spieth has still come up short from a second shot of 214 yards - and even Scottie Scheffler who has just 168 yards to the flag can't get it up there.

  3. '5 star gorgeous' - The sights of Royal Troon golf coursepublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 18 July

Ken Brown showcases the sights of Arran Islands which run along the side of Royal Troon.

  4. Triple-bogey for Smith on secondpublished at 15:31 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fitzpatrick E, Lowry E, Smith +4 (2)

Cam Smith would quite like to turn the clock back half an hour and restart his first round, I fancy.

After bogeying the first, the Aussie sends his tee shot on the second out of bounds and ends up taking seven.

For both Matt Fitzpatrick and Shane Lowry, it has been a par-par start.

  5. 'No-one will be more disappointed than Rory'published at 15:29 British Summer Time 18 July

    McIlroy +7 (78)

I think no-one would be more bitterly disappointed that Rory. He would have wanted to get off to a good start here to put Pinehurst behind him, and he’s just not done that.

He knows he’s going to go in and face a barrage of questions now.

  6. What hope is there for McIlroy?published at 15:29 British Summer Time 18 July

    McIlroy +7 (78)

Ten shots back after 18 holes is a daunting ask for Rory McIlroy but it wouldn’t be the largest comeback in Open history.

That was in 1896 when Harry Vardon retried an 11-shot deficit.

Or, if you’re looking for more recent omens, how about Paul Lawrie overturning 10 shots in the final round in 1999?

Tournaments can be lost on the first day, but this particular major is always unpredictable.

Make the cut on Friday - and then anything can happen.

  7. 'First real Tiger Woods moment'published at 15:27 British Summer Time 18 July

    Woods -1, Cantlay +1, Schauffele E (3)

    Alistair Bruce-Ball
Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

First real Tiger Woods moment - he holes an absolute beauty from the back of the third green.

It gave the spectators such a brilliant close vantage point to watch the putt and he judged it beautifully.

  8. Bogey finish for McIlroypublished at 15:27 British Summer Time 18 July

    Hatton +2 (73), Homa +5 (76), McIlroy +7 (78)

The camera has gone blurry and Rory McIlroy's head is probably a little fuzzy after an eight footer for par slides past the hole.

He's carded a seven-over round of 78 and is 10 shots off the lead after round one.

Not what the world number two would have anticipated.

Pars for his playing partners Max Homa and Tyrrell Hatton. I've got a hunch Tyrrell's +2 on day one may only continue to look better come play's end.

  9. Bogey start for Schefflerpublished at 15:26 British Summer Time 18 July

    Scheffler +1, Spieth E, Young E (1)

Scruffy start for world number one Scottie Scheffler who finds the rough then the greenside bunker on the first and fails to save par from 17 feet to start with a bogey.

  10. Tiger birdie!published at 15:24 British Summer Time 18 July

    Cantlay +1, Schauffele E, Woods -1 (3)

Tiger strikes! Woods is over 30 feet away just off the third green, but the magic's still there for the great man as he sends it home for an early crowd roar that only Tiger can produce.

Xander Schauffele just fails to follow him in, while Patrick Cantlay misses a five-footer for par to make a bogey five after a scrappy start.

  11. Postpublished at 15:18 British Summer Time 18 July

    Hatton +2, Homa +5, McIlroy +6 (17)

A trip to the seaside means a visit to the sand and Rory McIlroy knows immediately his tee shot is heading straight into the bunker. Again.

He'll be laying up from there.

  12. Harman finishes two overpublished at 15:17 British Summer Time 18 July

Brian Harman's first round as the defending Open champion is complete and he finishes with a two-over 73.

It would have been a tad better, but for blemishes on the 15th and 17th coming home.

Still, a solid enough start for the winner 12 months ago.

  13. 'It wasn't the best day'published at 15:15 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fleetwood +5 (76)

    Tommy FleetwoodImage source, Getty Images

A disappointed Tommy Fleetwood has been speaking after his five-over round of 76: "I got off to a bad start, missed every sort of important putt. Drove it pretty poor. Overall, it wasn't the best day.

"It just means I have to look towards tomorrow, have a much better day and go from there. It's not the ideal start but we'll see what we can do."

On the weather: "Golf was tough in general. But still you have to deal with whatever the conditions throw at you and I didn't really have it today."

  14. Koepka drops another shotpublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 18 July

    Clark E, Koepka +2, Matsuyama E (3)

For Brooks Koepka on hole three, read Brooks Koepka on hole two.

The approach to the green goes left, and he can't get up and down for par.

  15. Postpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 18 July

    Hatton +2, Homa +5, McIlroy +6 (17)

A trio of pars for this marquee group at the 17th as they trudge over to the last.

They're probably just ready for this round to be over with now.

  16. Postpublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 18 July

    Fitzpatrick E, Lowry E, Smith +1 (1)

All three players got acquainted with the Royal Troon sand on the opening hole, but while Shane Lowry and Matt Fitzpatrick recovered to make pars, Cam Smith starts with a bogey.

  17. Slow starterspublished at 15:12 British Summer Time 18 July

    Morikawa +1, Burns +1, Kim +1 (1)

Not the start Collin Morikawa would have hoped for. The 2021 champion tugged his second a touch on the first, then missed from 12 feet for par.

His playing partners Sam Burns and Si Woo Kim started with bogey, too.

    Long afternoon ahead, lads...

  18. 'It's got to be in Rory's head'published at 15:12 British Summer Time 18 July

    Hatton +2, Homa +5, McIlroy +6 (17)

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup

You have to wonder after that double at the Postage Stamp and out of bounds at 11, Rory McIlroy has got to be thinking ‘in the presser afterwards they’re going to be asking me if this is going to be another major that’s passed me by, I’m not going to win one’.

It’s got to be in his head, he says it’s not but it’s got to be there

  19. Postpublished at 15:09 British Summer Time 18 July

More solid stuff from Tiger Woods with a stress-free par on the second - in these worsening conditions anybody in the field would take that, but from some with his physical issues playing just his fifth tournament of the year it's even better.

His playing partners match his par-par start.

  20. Scheffler the man to beat?published at 15:08 British Summer Time 18 July

World number one Scottie Scheffler is about to get his fourth Open campaign under way.

The two-time Masters champion has never finished outside the top 25 at The Open, and given his dominance on the PGA Tour in 2024, is seen by many as the man to beat at Royal Troon this week.
