Lottie Woad shows a rare sign of frustration as she misses a birdie putt on the eighth, tapping her putter into the ground.

It did look like a good opportunity missed.

  3. Woad misses birdie chancepublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 31 July

So close, yet so far. Lottie Woad hits the green at the par-three eighth and has a relatively straightforward chance to putt for a birdie.

However, Woad is just wide of the hole and has to two-putt for par.

Lydia Ko and Lilia Vu also both settle for par.

  4. Korda nails first birdiepublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 31 July

    Korda E, Jutanugarn +1, Yin E (6)

American Nelly Korda chips an absolutely gorgeous third shot on the par-five sixth to go to within about six feet of the hole. She tidies up nicely with the putter and moves back to level par.

Fellow American Angel Yin also birdies, but Ariya Jutanugarn drops a shot.

Korda needed that as she approaches the more scorable part of the course.

Another solid putt to save par from Lottie Woad is greeted by another cheer from another packed gallery.

If you are following this group, a stepladder might come in handy.

As our TV pictures show a few brave souls doing some surfing (rather them than me), Lottie Woad's approach to the seventh is only just off line - but that's enough for her ball to catch a downslope and dribble off the right side of the green.

The 21-year-old - playing in just her second event as a pro - elects to putt and leaves five feet for par, which she makes to stay level par for the tournament.

  7. 'Some of the holes are just beasts out there'published at 14:55 British Summer Time 31 July

    M Lee -2 (70)

    Minjee LeeImage source, PA Media

Women's PGA champion Minjee Lee spoke to the media after her two-under-par 70 earlier today:

"I don't think I'm going to complain with a two-under start. Some of the holes are just beasts out there.

"Sometimes you've got to take what you get and just make a bogey and get out of there, reset and try to make better score on the next hole.

"It's a major championship. You're going to make bogeys. Just try to keep your emotions in check and take it one shot at a time."

  8. Korda bogeys fifthpublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 31 July

    Korda +1, Jutanugarn E, Yin +1 (5)

World number one Nelly Korda cards her first bogey of the day, on the tricky par-three fifth.

Teeing off from just a few yards in front of the beach, her shot gets held up in the air and lands well short. The par putt doesn't drop and she's back to one over.

Fellow American Angel Yin also drops a shot, while 2016 winner Ariya Jutanugarn never looks in trouble and saves par.

I just caught up with Lydia Hall, one of two home Welsh hopes this week, who carded a very tidy round of 72 with just two bogeys.

As a previous club champion at Royal Porthcawl, her local knowledge helped her avoid the majority of the trouble on the course.

She says she is looking forward to heading home to relax and see her dog before doing it all again tomorrow.

    Birdie for Lottie Woad!

The 21-year-old delights the packed gallery on the par-five sixth as she holes a long-range putt to move back to even for the tournament.

  11. Woad back to level parpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 31 July

    Ko E, Vu +3, Woad E (6)

Oh wow, what a great putt from distance again from Lottie Woad!

Similar to the first hole, Woad finds the cup from 25-odd feet for a birdie on the par-five sixth that gets her back to level par.

Lydia Ko's birdie putt has to go up and down a ridge across the green and the defending champion will tap in for par.

Lilia Vu's run of four straight bogeys ends with a par.

  12. Harry under parpublished at 14:36 British Summer Time 31 July

    Harry -1 (8)

Wales' Darcey Harry finds the cup from about 20 feet for birdie at the par-three eighth and she's into red figures.

As we mentioned earlier, Harry's caddie this week is her boyfriend Jacob Skov Olesen, who briefly led The Open at Royal Portrush earlier this month.

  13. Eagle sends Yamashita into leadpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 31 July

    Yamashita -5 (9)

Japan's Miyu Yamashita sinks a 12-footer for eagle on the ninth and she leapfrogs Eri Okayama into the lead of the Women's Open.

Yamashita is the first player today to reach five under after a front nine of 31 - and that was after a bogey at the opening hole!

  15. 'The Lottie Woad effect'published at 14:24 British Summer Time 31 July

    Ko E, Vu +3, Woad +1 (5)

    Gareth Vincent
BBC Sport Wales at Royal Porthcawl

Fans are packed in like sardines around the fifth green.

This, presumably, is the Lottie Woad effect.

Woad’s followers are left disappointed, however, as she cannot get up and down after a wayward tee shot.

That is a second bogey in three holes and Woad moves to one over.

There is another bogey, too, for Lilia Vu, while Lydia Ko makes par as another heavy shower blows over Royal Porthcawl.

  16. Korda even after fourpublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 31 July

    Korda E, Jutanugarn E, Yin E (4)

It's still as you were in world number one Nelly Korda's group with her, Angel Yin and Ariya Jutanugarn all saving par.

Yin had a 15-foot for birdie that was just one roll of the ball short of dropping in the hole.

Oh hang on, the rain is returning.

  17. Bogey for Woadpublished at 14:22 British Summer Time 31 July

    Ko E, Vu +3, Woad +1 (5)

Lottie Woad can't find the green from the tee on the par-three fifth and has to chip back into the wind.

She leaves about eight feet for par but she allows too much break and her effort slides past the left edge. Bogey.

The pain continues for Lilia Vu, who cards a fourth successive bogey.

  18. 'Even par is probably a good score'published at 14:14 British Summer Time 31 July

    A Lee -2 (70)

    Andrea LeeImage source, Getty Images

American Andrea Lee has finished in the top 30 in each of the first four majors of the year and she posted one of the better scores among the earlier starters today.

After finishing two under par, having been four under at one stage, she told the media: "I think the back nine is tougher than the front nine.

"There are some gettable holes on the front. I think the first five are pretty tough, and then the last probably five on the back nine, even par is probably a good score.

"I think if you told me that I'd be two under par after the first round, I would take it. I played really solid golf out there.

"Obviously I wish I was a couple of shots better but I'm still in contention after the first round and that's all that I can really ask for."

  19. Korda saves par againpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 31 July

    Korda E, Jutanugarn E, Yin E (3)

Oooof, both Nelly Korda and Ariya Jutanugarn land their drives into the bunker on the third.

Korda then gives herself a tricky third shot about 80 yards from the pin, but benefits from a kind bounce and plenty of side spin to go to within about eight feet of the hole.

And, when putting for par, she makes no mistake, finding the middle of the hole.

Jutanugarn also sinks a par. As does Angel Yin. Nobody has blinked in this group yet.

  20. Safe par for Woad as Vu drops backpublished at 14:06 British Summer Time 31 July

    Ko E, Vu +2, Woad E (4)

    Gareth Vincent
BBC Sport Wales at Royal Porthcawl

A solid par for Lottie Woad at the fourth, as she taps in after a long-range birdie putt rolls past the hole.

She stays level par, alongside defending champion Lydia Ko.

But it’s been a bit of a struggle since an opening birdie for Lilia Vu. The 2023 champion’s third straight bogey leaves her two over.
