Short par-three incoming, can she make it back-to-back-to-back birdies?

A reminder that there are several marquee groups heading out just after midday at Royal Porthcawl.

    Hull +2, Lee E, Thitikul +1 (6)

That will have done Hull's confidence the world of good.

Thailand's Jeeno Thitikul makes a bit of a dog's dinner of a chance to go back to evens after three-putting for par.

  6. Maguire reaches turn in level parpublished at 10:29 British Summer Time 31 July

    Maguire E (9)

Meanwhile, playing partner Andrea Lee also makes her birdie on the par-five ninth and she joins the leading group at three under.

I live 15 minutes from Royal Porthcawl and yet here I am sat reading updates on the website, stuck in an office in Cardiff. Surely I should be given a complimentary day or two off for the Women's Open?!

Attacking golf from Charley Hull as she backs up a good drive with an aggressive chip on to the green at the sixth hole.

It leaves her with a four-foot putt for birdie.

Come on Charley, no laying up at the par five and you can pull a few back.

The scene is glorious for the moment at Royal Porthcawl, with the sun shining as the waves roll in on the Bristol Channel.

But the golf is not easy, particularly early on.

The consensus seems to be that any player who reaches the fifth tee at level par will be pretty happy.

The sun is coming out now and with the breeze easing as we move inland, the crowd around me by the fifth green are just starting to remove their coats and jackets.

Charley Hull has just seen her 25-foot birdie putt slip past the left edge of the hole, but back-to-back pars is an improvement.

  14. Andrea Lee joins group of leaderspublished at 10:04 British Summer Time 31 July

    A Lee -2 (7)

A wonderful birdie putt drops on the seventh for Andrea Lee and the American joins the growing list of players on two under par, which is good enough for a tie for the lead.

There are now six players on that mark.

Dongeun Lee, who was at three under, dropped a shot at the par-five 13th.

  15. Hull just misses birdiepublished at 10:02 British Summer Time 31 July

    Hull +3, Lee E, Thitikul +1 (5)

Much better from Charley Hull as she begins to find her way into this first round after a poor start.

A good drive and approach at the fifth hole leaves her with a 25-foot putt for her first birdie of the day... which just grazes the edge of the hole.

Hull settles for par, but some encouraging signs.

  16. Four straight birdies for Corpuzpublished at 09:55 British Summer Time 31 July

    Corpuz -2 (10)

What a run of holes for American Allisen Corpuz.

The 2023 US Women's Open champion has played holes seven through 10 in four under par, propelling her into a tie for second place at two under for the tournament.

The weather is certainly improving and once players get through that tough stretch of holes to start, it appears that some birdie opportunities are there.

  17. Hull stops the rotpublished at 09:51 British Summer Time 31 July

    Hull (+3), Lee E, Thitikul +1 (4)

Charley Hull manages to stop her bogey run at the fourth hole.

Hull makes a good approach to the green and is able to go on to hold par.

The Englishwoman will hope that signals a change of fortune.

  18. Debutant Lee leads the waypublished at 09:44 British Summer Time 31 July

    Lee -3 (12)

Women's Open debutant Dongeun Lee is top of the leaderboard at three under par through 12 holes.

The 20-year-old from South Korea, who went out in the second group this morning, made an eagle on the par-three ninth.

A birdie on the 12th has put her in at the head of the pack.

  19. Bogey to start for Wales' Hallpublished at 09:38 British Summer Time 31 July

    Hall +1 (1)

    Gareth Vincent

It is not the start Lydia Hall wanted.

Hall taps in for bogey on the first as she pays the price for finding the bunker off the tee.

The early struggles continue for Charley Hull on the par-four third hole.

After a fine tee shot her approach missed the two-tiered green, almost out of bounds, leaving her with a difficult chip having to stand half way up a bank that surrounds the green.

She leaves both the chip and the subsequent putt short and bogeys to move to three over.
