    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (3)

Shane Lowry has not been a little subdued in the first three holes, but his approach shot to the green is the pick at the fourth. Can he get Europe on the board in match one?

  2. Scheffler statspublished at 18:22 BST 27 September

Some of the stats on Scottie Scheffler don't make for great reading.

    • His Ryder Cup record is now: P10 W2 L5 T3
    • He's gone seven matches without a win
    • First current world number one to lose his first 3 matches at a Ryder Cup
    • Just fourth player to lose in first three sessions of a Ryder Cup since Europe joined in 1979

    A/S DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose A/S (2)

Justin Rose had his Weetabix this morning (other cereals are available).

The Englishman is off to a flier in this fourball!

Two birdies in his first two holes and he has given himself an excellent look at a third on the par-three third as he lands his tee shot around five feet from the hole.

Scottie Scheffler has provided the closest challenge as he looks at a 16-footer.

Sure you don’t need me to tell you that Rory McIlroy is box office.

But the Masters champion being followed around by huge groups - including One Direction pop star Niall Horan and former England footballer Robbie Fowler - reinforces the point.

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton

A slight surprise as Tyrrell Hatton walks out on to the first tee with Matt Fitzpatrick for Europe in the final fourball match of Saturday.

Viktor Hovland was meant to be featuring but there is a suggestion that he has picked up a neck injury .

  6. Second halved in birdiespublished at 18:15 BST 27 September

    A/S DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose A/S (2)

No mistake from Scotties Scheffler... and no mistake from Justin Rose either.

Two holes and two lots of birdies leave us all square in this titanic battle.

  7. Opening halfpublished at 18:14 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun A/S Rahm/Straka (1)

Xander Schauffele gets his birdie three at the opening hole, and he needs to as well as Jon Rahm has fired in an wedge nice a tight and he has no problem matching that for a half to start.

  8. Match fourpublished at 18:12 BST 27 September

    Burns/Cantlay v Fitzpatrick/Hovland (18:13 BST)

Split of Burns, Cantlay, Fitzpatrick and Hovland

A cracking final fourball this. Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay fought back superbly on Friday to halve their match with Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry.

Matt Fitzpatrick and Viktor Hovland both sat out of that session but have both been in action on Saturday with mixed fortunes.

The Norwegian was part of the pairing to defeat Russell Henley and world number one Scottie Scheffler in the foursomes earlier, while England's Fitzpatrick and Ludvig Aberg were soundly beaten by Byson DeChambeau and Cameron Young.

  9. Third hole halvedpublished at 18:12 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (3)

    Cameron YoungImage source, Getty Images

Two superb tee shots from Justin Thomas and Cameron Young at the third.

"Get in the hole!" is the shout from the gallery when Thomas putts for a birdie, but it flashes wide.

Young has the best chance, but he too fluffs an opportunity to put the USA one up. They are just not getting the breaks at the moment.

  10. Postpublished at 18:10 BST 27 September

    A/S DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose A/S (1)

How about that from Justin Rose?!

Lovely stuff from the Englishman with his approach to land the ball just beyond the flag and let it roll back to three feet and good sight at another birdie.

Whatever you can do, I can do too is the reply from Scottie Scheffler, bringing his to around three feet too.

    A/S DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose A/S (1)

Bryson DeChambeau is taking no prisoners today!

While Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and American team-mate Scottie Scheffler all take the more conventional route to the middle of the fairway, DeChambeau has decided to fly it over the trees and beyond the end of the fairway into the rough before the green.

Is he having a driving competition with himself today?

The Bethpage bearpit has been stoked. Many fans out here are clearly on a Saturday session.

Well, we did see some sipping lager before 7am.

Shane Lowry isn’t happy when there is noise when he is teeing off on the third tee. Nor at missing the green.

Lots of sweaty muttering from the Irishman, who flashes an icy stare at the galleries.

  13. 'Our superstars making points' - Donaldpublished at 18:03 BST 27 September

    Luke DoanldImage source, Getty Images

Team Europe captain Luke Donald on why he has put out Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood out in the fourballs to ensure they play in every session here in New York:

"It's massive. Two years ago, our superstars, all made a lot of points and they are playing together.

"You need your superstars to perform at their highest, and they certainly have showed that so far."

On why rookie Rasmus Hojgaard is not out there having lost his only session so far:

""aturday is always a little bit more fluid. We have four really strong groups, and we're excited to see how the session goes again."

  14. A new song?published at 18:02 BST 27 September

“Shoes off for the boys in brown’” is the latest European chant.

The fans are nowhere near as rowdy on the first tee as they were this morning. Europe have done a brilliant job of quietening the crowd… so far.

  15. Postpublished at 18:02 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka

Sepp Straka and Jon Rahm hit a pair of beauties off the first tee - US Open champion JJ Spaun a bit further left with his but no real trouble.

Xander Schauffele rips a nice one similar to Rahm so all three in decent shape as the stride down the fairway. Match three up and running.

  16. 'Great start by Rose'published at 17:59 BST 27 September

    A/S DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose A/S (1)

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup on BBC Radio 5 Live

Great start by Justin Rose and it’s always nice to get in a nice putt like that on the first hole. A 10 footer to give him confidence for the rest of the round.

  17. Second hole halvedpublished at 17:58 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (2)

Rory McIlroy comes up just short with a 10 foot putt from the back left of the green.

Cameron Young is further back with his birdie chance but he is unable to capitalise.

All square after two in match one.

  18. Postpublished at 17:58 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka (17:57 BST)

Here we go for match three, and firstly, how many energy drinks has this announcer had today?

  19. Hole halved in birdiespublished at 17:57 BST 27 September

    A/S DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose A/S (1)

No joy for Tommy Fleetwood from his putt... but there is for Justin Rose!

Picking up where he left off yesterday, he coolly rolls in for birdie to force Scheffler or DeChambeau to tidy up with there's.

They do and we are all square after the first.

  20. Thomas the big man for US?published at 17:54 BST 27 September

    Peter Scrivener
BBC Sport senior journalist at Bethpage

This time four years ago Justin Thomas was downing a beer and slamming the can on the first tee at Whistling Straits with the US stretching well clear.

America’s chief cheerleader sat out the afternoon fourballs back then but boy is he needed by his team today. USA need the fans to stay with them this afternoon.
