Europe build lead on feisty second day at Ryder Cup

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose (17:41 BST)

Tommy Fleetwood is the first to take his approach... Not too bad but some serious spin brings it back towards the front of the green.

They are really trying to use the back-stop and slope on this green as Justin Rose filters his to around 10ft and Scottie Scheffler goes better to around three.

Can DeChambeau take advantage of him mammoth drive? Yes.

He matches his team-mate and Europe are going to have to make a putt here.

  2. Postpublished at 17:54 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (1)

Justin Thomas immediately drops his head after taking a chunk of the fairway with his approach shot at the second, and he ends up in the bunker.

Rory McIlroy gets himself on the green in two.

  3. Match 3published at 17:53 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka (17:57 BST)

Split of Schauffele, Spaun, Rahm and Straka

Europe's bruise brothers are going out together again with Sepp Straka partnering Jon Rahm after they won their fourballs yesterday against Scottie Scheffler and JJ Spaun.

Spaun is back to face them again but has Xander Schauffele as his partner this time. Should be some good golf in this one.

  4. 'Fleetwood and Rose will be up for this'published at 17:53 BST 27 September

    Scheffler/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup on BBC Radio 5 Live

You are up against the best player in the world and one of the most popular players in the world – the showman, Bryson DeChambeau.

I think Fleetwood and Rose will be up for this.

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (1)

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry find some gentle rough on the left side of the 382-yard second hole with their opening drives. Pretty decent tee shots from Cameron Young and Justin Thomas, too.

  6. Unplanned?published at 17:50 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose (17:41 BST)

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think this partnership is perhaps one Keegan Bradley had planned on.

He just has to try something different - and he is throwing everything at it.

The atmosphere was electric when Bryson DeChambeau landed his ball close to the green.

  7. Bottom line - Europe playing betterpublished at 17:48 BST 27 September

    Alex Miceli
US golf reporter on BBC Radio 5 live

If you’re an American fan, you realised at 11:56 eastern time this match became basically over. You assume at the very least that the Europeans are going to get another couple of points this afternoon which puts the at 10 ½ which in any vernacular would be insurmountable.

You look at Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Young and say ‘why didn’t we that have yesterday morning’. There’s so many points you can look to and say ‘Keegan Bradley, why did you do this, Keegan why did you do that?, Keegan why didn’t you change your plan?’

The definition of insanity is continuing to do the same thing over and over again and assuming there is going to be a different result. There is no different result.

The bottom line is that the Europeans have played better at times. As Americans we’re saying ‘why can’t that be us’. We’ve got the number one player in the world and he basically can’t find the green with a wedge from the fairway.

  8. Under way!published at 17:47 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose (17:41 BST)

It is Justin Rose to get this fourballs under way and he confidently strikes it just to the left of the fairway.

Up steps team-mate Tommy Fleetwood and he follows suit on the same side.

Scottie Scheffler follows a similar line but forces it a bit further up the fairway.

Now, what can Bryson DeChambeau do?

Hammer it 341 yards to just shy of the slope in front of the green - colossal.

Finally a song I know… Chappell Roan’s Pink Pony Club fills the air. I hope my daughter is reading and proud that I’ve picked it out!

  10. First hole halvedpublished at 17:43 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry A/S (1)

Rory McIlroy rolls his putt at a snails pace but it just goes a fraction wide of the hole.

Cameron Young steps up with the best chance in the group, but he cannot bag a birdie to put the USA one up in the first match.

Sweaty palms and a touch of nerves, perhaps.

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose (17:41 BST)

Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose

USA Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley has gone for a heavyweight pairing in this second fourballs match with world number one Scottie Scheffler joining the big personality of Bryson DeChambeau.

But, the European duo of Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose are unlikely to be fazed by that.

The Englishmen came out winners in their fourballs match yesterday afternoon against DeChambeau, while Scheffler is yet to win a point this week.

We could be in for a real ding-dong battle here...

  12. ‘Only got one song…’published at 17:37 BST 27 September

    Peter Scrivener
BBC Sport senior journalist at Bethpage

Collin Morikawa is trying to orchestrate a "U-S-A" chant to sweep across this stand round the back of the 18th.

It sort of works but the Europeans respond with “one song, you’ve only got one song” before the forced fun of the DJ playing some country and western ditty overpowers everyone. A shame that.

  13. Postpublished at 17:37 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry

Shane Lowry finds the green at the first hole with his approach shot, but a bit of backspin takes it a smidgen off while Justin Thomas goes beyond the pin.

Cameron Young's graceful iron has the best chance, but Rory McIlroy is not too far away either.

  14. USA haven't got strategypublished at 17:34 BST 27 September

    USA 3½ - 8½ Europe

    Iain Carter
BBC golf correspondent on BBC Radio 5 Live at Bethpage Black

If the Americans come back from this they’re going to need heart and passion. And that’s all they’ve got. They haven’t got strategy. We’ve highlighted the deficiencies.

The 132nd best possible combination out of 132 has been put together and it has lost twice. Alright, it has lost against the best possible foursomes combination in the world in Fleetwood and McIlroy

But even so, you look at it and the cold analytical approach by Luke Donald and his time of vice-captains and his strategic adviser Paul McGinley - it’s not there for the Americans.

USA need to win this session by a margin otherwise we're in for a boring Sunday tomorrow?

If you agree with that statement, hit the thumbs...

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry

Shane Lowry belts one straight down the fairway and is followed there by Rory McIlroy, who has determination and concentration etched on his face.

Justin Thomas and Cameron Young also hit strong tee shots.

    We're off.

Here we go in the fourballs, then.

Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry up against Justin Thomas and Cameron Young. The players have just been introduced on the first tee.

Boos for the Europeans, as you would expect.

    Lowry to tee off first.
