Europe build lead on feisty second day at Ryder Cup

  1. 'Pretty appalling what was said to McIlroy'published at 18:54 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry 2UP (5)

    Shaun Micheel
2003 US PGA Championship winner on BBC Radio 5 live

It was pretty appalling what was said and Rory went over to the rules official and looked to have a conversation about when he’s over the ball, is there anything you can do to negate some of the things being said.

I think this is going to work against the US if [certain fans] continue the things they are saying.

It’s going to be over a lot quicker than even the US is worried about.

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (2)

That will go down as an early missed opportunity for Europe with Matt Fitzpatrick failing to knock in a tiddler.

Hatton now has a putt of a similar length to halve the hole and makes no mistake.

In the background a fan shouts “fore” as the Englishman hits his putt.

Two huge roars of "Get in" - louder than every other reaction - come from the fifth green.

One from Shane Lowry. The other? From Shane Lowry’s dad.

  4. 'USA need to gather and get some points fast'published at 18:49 BST 27 September

    Spaun/Schauffele v Rahm/Straka 1UP (3)

    Oliver Wilson
Former Ryder Cup player on BBC Radio 5 Live at Bethpage Black

It’s a new game and it’s desperately important to get a game on the board. Everyone wants to come here and contribute. That’s the main thing. Refocus, get out here and try and do your best.

This American team needs to really gather and get some points on the board fast.

  5. Lowry on firepublished at 18:48 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry 2UP (5)

Cameron Young and Justin Thomas miss tricky birdie putts at the fifth leaving Shane Lowry with a chance to win the hole.

The Irishman makes no mistake from about six feet and lets off another guttural roar.

Europe two up in match one.

  6. Missed chancepublished at 18:48 BST 27 September

    Schauffele/Spaun v Rahm/Straka 1UP (3)

Jon Rahm misses a good chance to win the third hole as he doesn't give his effort from 12 feet down the hill enough juice and it curls off away from the hole.

So just a half, but Europe stay ahead.

Oooh! Things are getting a little tasty between Lowry/McIlroy, the European entourage and the American crowd.

Some of Lowry’s pals shoot back when McIlroy is told he “sucks”.

“Good one lads. You should be on stage,” is the Irish retort.

Then someone sounding like Happy Gilmore’s paid-for heckler goes too far.

A member of the New York State Police quickly interjects the comments, telling him firmly to zip it.

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (1)

Brilliant from Matt Fitzpatrick. The Englishman spins a wedge into a few feet on the second, with the flag completely unsighted and all of a sudden it's advantage Europe.

Sam Burns and Patrick Cantlay's balls are not even in the same camera shot.

  9. Back to all squarepublished at 18:44 BST 27 September

    A/S DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose A/S (4)

Neither Tommy Fleetwood or Justin Rose can follow in Bryson DeChambeau's eagle and that means we are back to all square in match two.

Four birdies in a row from Europe and yet somehow this game is level... Ryder Cup golf, eh?

  10. Postpublished at 18:42 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry 1UP (4)

A tip of the cap from Shane Lowry to a pocket of European fans after he chips on to the green at the fifth. Rory McIlroy follows it up by chipping himself within a short distance of the hole.

The two Europeans bump fists before purposefully striding off.

  11. Wow!published at 18:40 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (3)

Fairway found all round in this fourball on the par-five fourth.

    But who will take advantage?

Justin Rose can't as he drags it long and wide into the greenside rough.

Tommy Fleetwood leaves himself a 20-footer, while Scottie Scheffler looks disappointed after floating it to around 50ft away.

But, wow. Almost an ALBATROSS from Bryson DeChambeau!

A kick-in eagle and it is going to need something a bit special from Rose or Fleetwood now.

Sepp Straka strikes at the second! Jon Rahm is furtherest away but gets his four nicely, then the two Americans can only two-putt from distance and up steps the big Austrian to drain his effort from 15 feet away.

    Burns/Cantlay A/S Fitzpatrick/Hatton (1)

A shout of 'fore right' goes up (again) as Tyrrell Hatton chips on to the first green but it's fine and drops in around 11 feet from the pin.

I hope the Englishman had a lightish lunch given his unexpected call up for action.

All four players have birdie putts but none are made with Sam Burns pushing a chance to win the hole right from 10 feet.

Uh oh. Rory McIlroy walks away from his ball after a catcall. That leads to more stick when he misses the putt.

McIlroy fumes about it, shooting an exasperated look to the offenders.

Lowry strides around like a nightclub bouncer ready to have a word.

So it’s no wonder Lowry explodes when he sinks his putt and beats his chest.

“Have that New York!” Is what he’s thinking.

  16. Lowry puts Europe one uppublished at 18:30 BST 27 September

    Thomas/Young v McIlroy/Lowry 1UP (4)

    Shane Lowry, you beauty!

After watching Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy miss on the green at the fourth the Irishman rolls in an ice-cool putt from about 10 feet.

Fine margins in this match so far, so that could be vital from Lowry.

  17. 'Rose fresh and firing at all the flags'published at 18:30 BST 27 September

    Scheffler/DeChambeau v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (3)

    Catriona Matthew
Captain of Team Europe at the 2019 & 2021 Solheim Cup on BBC Radio 5 Live

[Justin Rose] has come out fresh and he’s firing at all the flags.

Justin is in phenomenal shape but it is a long course and having players of that experience and quality to come out fresh in the afternoon is a bonus for the team.

  18. Blue on the boardpublished at 18:29 BST 27 September

    DeChambeau/Scheffler v Fleetwood/Rose 1UP (3)

Bryson DeChambeau can't produce the spectacular and Scottie Scheffler sees his aggressive putt slide by.

The floor is all Justin Rose's and he needs no second invitation. He calmly rolls in for a third birdie and that is the first bit of blue on the board.

  19. Envelope time before Sunday?published at 18:25 BST 27 September

Viktor Hovland's injury raises the possibility of the 'envelope rule' being invoked for Sunday's singles.

What is the envelope rule? Well, if a player is injured, the envelope that was sealed by the opposing captain with the name of one of his players written on a piece of paper inside will be opened.

That player and the injured player will sit out the singles and that match will be considered a half.

  20. Vik-torious this morning, injured this afternoonpublished at 18:25 BST 27 September

Confirmation from Bethpage that Viktor Hovland withdrew from this afternoon's fourball with a neck injury.

But was it this celebration at the 17th this morning where he hurt his neck?

He's been replaced by Tyrrell Hatton, who has won both his matches so far at this Ryder Cup.
