Go on, admit it, how many of you had Russell Henley as fourth favourite?

    Gotta hand it to Opta...

It is 14 years since Darren Clarke won the Open at Royal St George's.

Now 56 and sporting a rugged white beard, the 'Prince of Darkness' has only made the cut once in his past seven appearances at this tournament.

That was last year though at Royal Troon.

Back in his home country, this morning he's heading out alongside Lucas Herbert of Australia and America's Davis Riley.

  3. Harrington drops anotherpublished at 07:42 British Summer Time 17 July

    Harrington +1, Hojgaard -1, McKibbin +2 (4)

Oh Padraig... another three-putt bogey for the Irishman who was the last to win back-to-back Open titles in 2007 and 2008.

This one is from 50+ feet. He knocked the first effort into about five feet but pushed the par putt right of the hole.

Nicolai Hojgaard and Tom McKibbin both in for par - the latter holing an eight footer to perhaps settle early nerves.

  6. Clarke talks us through hole fourpublished at 07:26 British Summer Time 17 July

The opening trio are stepping on to the fourth tee. Out of bounds down the right and a tight entrance between sand dunes to the green. But you don't want to read my thoughts - here's Open champion Darren Clarke's guide to 'Fred Daly's'.

Well, the men from the island of Ireland make a bit of a mess of the third. A three-putt from Padraig Harrington - missing a seven-footer for par after an average lag putt from 48ft - sees him drop back to level.

Tom McKibbin's slow start continues - he fails with an eight-footer. But Nicolai Hojgaard is now sitting pretty. It's only a par but holing six footers is good for the soul.

  8. Mickelson tees offpublished at 07:23 British Summer Time 17 July

The 2013 Open champion at Muirfield gets his round under way, as Phil Mickelson hits his tee shot at the first.

Still a popular figure, Mickelson, complete with mirror sunglasses on, will take a good few fans around with him here and the six-time major champion can still play a bit you know.

I always wonder just how many majors Mickelson would have won if he wasn't going up against Tiger Woods for most of his career...

The third is a 167-yard par three with a devilishly difficult shot to keep your ball on the plateau green. Slopes all around repel the ball away from the putting surface. And if you do manage to land one on there, getting it to stop is tricky.

The pin is front edge, Padraig Harrington's ball clings on to the back of the green - 48ft for birdie.

His playing partners Tom McKibbin and Nicolai Hojgaard both miss the green but chip on and are left with testers for par.

There was a little bit of fun away from the course in Portrush harbour on Monday evening with former One Direction star Niall Horan getting involved in a light-hearted chipping contest alongside Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin among others.

Several hundred people were craning to see if Horan - who also runs a golf management company - had the 'Magic' to hit a 'Perfect' shot.

The first thing visitors saw when they emerged into the arrivals hall at Belfast City Airport on Wednesday was a putting competition. The prize for holing one of your two six-footers? This box of cakes…

Full disclosure, it took two goes to claim the spoils. Oh, and half of them have been eaten already.

BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast's James Gregg has been soaking up the crowds down the opening fairway.

“If this place needed any more atmosphere," he tells Rick Edwards. "I think Padraig Harrington provided some real crackle, some real sparkle by burying that opening birdie attempt."

He meets Steve and Jesse, who will certainly be in the running for furthest distance travelled.

“G’day. I’ve come a long, long way, from Western Australia," says Steve..

Jesse: “[I’m here to see] pretty much any of the Australians. There’s a couple of Western Australian guys we’re looking out for. Mainly Ryan Peake, Curtis Luck, Min Woo Lee..."

“It’s pretty amazing," added Steve. "We came for a holiday in January, so were not expecting to come back but went into the ballot and got some tickets so we had to come.

"W brought some good weather with us yesterday."

It's not an exaggeration to say the first-tee atmosphere rivalled the Ryder Cup there. So many hardy souls up pre-dawn to take in the opening blows of the tournament.

It's always great to watch Padraig Harrington's vigorous practice swings in action, too.

Yesterday, Harrington admitted he wasn't sure what club he would hit for the opening ball. A long iron, into the wind, fairway found. He chose well. As did Tom McKibbin and Rasmus Hojgaard.
