Royal Ascot 2015: Gleneagles & Sole Power among highlights

Sole Power wins the King's Stand Stakes in 2014

Gleneagles is favourite for Tuesday's big race as Royal Ascot prepares to welcome nearly 300,000 racegoers over five days for its 2015 meeting.

The dual Guineas winner, trained by Aidan O'Brien, lines up under Ryan Moore in the St James's Palace Stakes.

Other day-one highlights include Hong Kong challenger Able Friend in the opening Queen Anne Stakes and sprinter Sole Power seeking a historic treble.

Bookmakers expect £100m to be wagered on the meeting this week.

First-day schedule

14:30 BST: Queen Anne Stakes - Able Friend, rated the second best thoroughbred in the world behind Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, takes on the French-trained Solow, and the Richard Hannon pair, Night Of Thunder and Toormore.

15:05: Coventry Stakes - Runaway Epsom winner Buratino represents Mark Johnston while Round Two looks another leading juvenile for Irish trainer Jim Bolger.

15:40: King's Stand Stakes - Sole Power, trained by Eddie Lynam, seeks to become the first horse to win the five-furlong King's Stand Stakes three times.

16:20: St James's Palace Stakes - Gleneagles is hot favourite after winning the English and Irish 2,000 Guineas, with opponents this time including Make Believe, winner of the French version.

17:00: Ascot Stakes - Ray Ward has been well backed in recent days as he looks to give trainer David Simcock victory in the two-and-a-half-mile stamina test.

17:35: Windsor Castle Stakes - Ruby Notion goes for leading American trainer Wesley Ward.

Dettori eyes golden Ascot

Frankie Dettori rides the unbeaten Consort in Tuesday's feature race, and goes into the big meeting seeking a 50th Royal Ascot winner and enjoying life back in the big time.

The 44-year-old completed a Classic double on Sunday - victory in the French Oaks aboard Star of Seville following his triumph in the Derby at Epsom eight days earlier with Golden Horn.

"I feel great, I feel like I am riding as well as I ever have done, so will be hoping for a few more winners this week," said the Italian-born rider.

He is enjoying a renaissance after a miserable period from the end of 2012 when he split from long-term employers Godolphin and was given a six-month ban after testing positive for cocaine.

A right royal celebration?

Runners from 10 countries will be in action, with several from the United States - although the 2014 Horse of the Year California Chrome has been ruled out of the Prince of Wales's Stakes on Wednesday with a foot abscess.

The second day does see a leading hope for the Queen - Touchline (Sandingham Stakes) - as she seeks her 23rd triumph as an owner at the Royal meeting.

Estimate, who provided her last victory at the fixture in Thursday's Gold Cup two years ago, has now been retired.

But three other leading Royal hopes for 2015 are: Peacock (Tercentenary Stakes, Thursday); Ring Of Truth (Albany Stakes, Friday) and Fabricate (Queen's Vase, Friday).
