Summary

  1. Who is favourite to win Cheltenham Gold Cup?published at 15:40 Greenwich Mean Time

Galopin Des Champs stays very well. He has an abundance of stamina. The more rain, the better at Cheltenham for him. If we get a heavy downpour later on this afternoon, that will certainly play to his strengths. To get here on three occasions is tough enough but to win three is remarkable.

He's odds-on favourite so if you put £2 on, you might only make £1 profit. He is a heavy, heavy favourite. He has got some horses in there who like the drier conditions. Banbridge won a King George at Christmas. He is a speedier type, there are question marks if he'll stay the trip. He's never run over it.

In case you wondered, Willie Mullins cannot train all the winners today.

He gives his rivals a rest in the penultimate race, the Hunters' Chase, as he has no runner in the race.

It may be he is celebrating a fifth winner by then with Galopin Des Champs in the Gold Cup.

Best Mate's jockey Jim Culloty, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "I was a nervous wreck. At that time there were no breathalysers or anything. Some of the lads went out in Cheltenham but I took it very seriously. I was home and in bed by 9pm. I got to the races, walked the track to take my mind off and make sure everything was right.

"I think he's the best horse in the race and appears to be coming into it in good form."

Best Mate was the last horse to win three Gold Cups in a row, doing so in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

His jockey, Jim Culloty, is a man who knows as well as anyone what it takes to make history - as Galopin Des Champs aims to do in 25 minutes or so...

  5. In the footsteps of Arkle?published at 15:34 Greenwich Mean Time

Mentioning any horse in the same breath as the legendary Arkle is considered sacrilege by some racing fans.

A statue of he great Irish steeplechaser overlooks the Cheltenham winners' enclosure.

Arkle won the Gold Cup here three times in the 1960s before injury curtailed his career.

Galopin Des Champs can certainly lay claim to be the best Irish chaser since if he seals the treble later on.

Golden Miller, Cottage Rake, Arkle and Best Mate are the only horses to have won the Gold Cup at least three times.

Could we have a Galopin statue in the future...

Winning jockey Paul Townend tells ITV Racing: “He takes a bit of warming up but he is a classy individual.

“A lot of this is confidence and getting in a rhythm with him.

“Every winner here is special but we will move on to the next one (Galopin Des Champs)."

15:20 Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle 3m

Four wins from four for Willie Mullins!

Another excellent ride by Paul Townend, bringing his horse right from the back of the field to the very front in double quick time.

It was a real head to head between him and The Big Westerner after the final hurdle, but the mare looked to tire in the final strides.

And with that, Mullins is up to 10 wins at the Festival. And he has Galopin des Champs to come next...

Ooh, The Big Westerner got caught up in midfield there. The favourite has little room to manouvre.

    Here comes Jasmin De Vaux!

Jet Blue, third favourite who we have seen little from, is starting to make a move from the back.

As is Jasmin De Vaux. Now is when we expect the favourites to start to shift.

Away from the stands they go, still some distance to run.

Derryhassen Paddy doesn't jump the latest hurdle well, allowing Wingmen to take the lead.

Derryhassen Paddy screams the physicality of a chaser in the making.

Wingmen, backed down to 6-1 shortly before this race, has moved into the lead.

All 20 horses are covered by about 10 lengths here, a very crowded and competitive field.

All still in contention with seven to jump.

Second favourite Jasmin De Vaux has been a back marker thus far.

Derryhassen Paddy is the early leader, but there are three or four right on its flanks.

    Impossible to call early on.

12 hurdles here, all over the first three safely.
