1. Joy and despair at Cheltenhampublished at 13:04 Greenwich Mean Time

If a picture tells a story, this is it.

Lorcan Williams strides to the line on Tuesday's 25-1 Champion Hurdle winner Golden Ace, while Paul Townend gets to his feet after his mount State Man fell when clear at the last.

Townend was also denied by a blunder from Majborough in the Arkle Chase, but he still leads the jockey standings with two wins - on Kopek Des Bordes and Lossiemouth.

Golden Ace was a shock 25-1 winner of the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham after previous victors Constitution Hill and State Man fell.

The 2023 champion Constitution Hill was sent off odds-on favourite but came down early in the big race.

Last year's winner State Man looked set to claim victory before a dramatic fall at the last hurdle.

That left Golden Ace, ridden by Lorcan Williams for trainer Jeremy Scott, to come through and win by nine lengths from 66-1 outsider Burdett Road.

Both Constitution Hill and State Man galloped away unscathed from their falls.

"I'm lost for words. This is the best day of my life by far," said Williams, who shrugged his shoulders after a first top-level Grade One win. "You dream of these moments as a kid."

The trainer had been persuaded to run in the feature race, rather than the Mares' Hurdle, by owner Ian Gosden.

Borrowing a line from Only Fools and Horses, Gosden said: "He who dares, wins, Rodney."

Temperatures of around 1C (34F) brought snowfall to Cheltenham and wider Gloucestershire this morning, including the M5 in Tewkesbury.

But the Jockey Club told the BBC earlier there was no planned inspection.

There was no reported travel disruption, according to traffic monitoring website Inrix.

You can always expect the unexpected at Cheltenham.

This morning's wintry showers brought memories back for seasoned racegoers of The Thinker winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup in the snow in 1987.

While it remains chilly, the sleet and snow have now gone, and it is not expected to dramatically alter the ground conditions.

The going is expected to be good to soft on both the chase and hurdle courses, and similar on the cross country track.

Quite incredibly, we saw snow this morning at Cheltenham. Not just a flurry either, it was heavy enough at one stage you could barely see the far end of the course.

Fortunately for racegoers, the worst of the weather seems to have been contained for earlier this morning and this afternoon looks much brighter.

Still, with temperatures firmly in single figures, we hope you took your coat to the Festival - even if it spoils your outfit.
