Strike one to the JP McManus team!

Harry Skelton rides The New Lion perfectly - he hung on to the tails of Final Demand and The Yellow Clay as they made a move, then jumped the final hurdle with power before streaking away to the finish.

Trained by Harry's brother Dan, the horse was bought by McManus earlier this year.

A terrific race, and a great tempo-setter for day two at Cheltenham.

Pretty good tempo, they're going at a reasonable gallop. Final Demand is a little bit further back than I expected.

Six hurdles to go, Sixmilebridge remains in front.

There are three runners in this race wearing the green and yellow silks of JP McManus - they are all holding together at the back of the pack currently.

Second favourite The New Lion, backed heavily in the run-up to this race, is among them.

We'll be asking some of our pundits for selections during the week. Here's former jump jockey Andrew Thornton:

13:20 Turners' Novices Hurdle - Final Demand 6-4

Final Demand also won at the Dublin Racing Festival like the winner of the first - Kopek Des Bordes - yesterday. A strong stayer and I can see him powering up the hill.

    14:40 Coral Cup - Be Aware 4-1

Trainer Dan Skelton has targeted this race for Be Aware since the start of the season. A very consistent profile with hopefully a few pounds in hand over the opposition.

Willie Mullins and Paul Townend will look for a hat-trick of wins together in Wednesday’s opening race of the day, the Turners Novices’ Hurdle.

Townend rode Kopek Des Bordes and Lossiemouth as odds-on winners on Tuesday and the duo link up with Final Demand here.

The New Lion is also short-priced for trainer Dan Skelton, with son Harry Skelton riding.

Like the fancied duo, The Yellow Clay and Sixmilebridge both come into this one on the back of winning streaks, with Potters Charm also taking four wins and a second in its last five outings.

Jonbon is the hot favourite to win Wednesday's Queen Mother Champion chase for trainer Nicky Henderson.

He missed last year's contest when the trainer's yard was hit by a bug.

Jonbon has won 17 of his 20 races, including two at Cheltenham, but his three defeats have come at the course.

In the opening Turners Novices' Hurdle, Final Demand for Willie Mullins and Dan Skelton's The New Lion are leading contenders.

Mullins has won five of the last seven runnings of the concluding Champion Bumper, and his son Patrick rides Copacabana this time.

  20. Lossiemouth cruises after Kopek Des Bordes seals emotional winpublished at 13:07 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March

Lossiemouth retained her Mares' Hurdle crown in convincing style, and left many wondering how she might have fared in the Champion Hurdle.

The Mullins-trained grey, owned by Rich Ricci, was handed the easier challenge after falling in the Irish Champion Hurdle last time out.

And the 4-6 favourite cruised to victory under Townend by seven and a half lengths from stablemate Jade De Grugy for a third triumph at the Festival.

The meeting got off to the perfect start for favourite backers as Kopek Des Bordes also justified odds of 4-6 for Townend and Mullins, a victory greeted by hearty cries of 'Ole, Ole, Ole' from the stands.

It was an emotional success for owner Charlie McCarthy, who was diagnosed with kidney cancer at the start of this year and had surgery last month.

"I'm on cloud nine. I just can't get over it. I'm walking on air," said McCarthy.

There was a poignant runner-up in William Munny, running in the same yellow and blue silks of trainer-owner Barry Connell, who triumphed with Marine Nationale two years ago.

The contest was renamed the Michael O'Sullivan Supreme Novices' Hurdle in honour of the Irish jockey who won on Marine Nationale. The rider died last month aged 24 after a fall.
