    Former Manchester United defender Arthur Albiston says the players have to take a portion of the blame for the Red Devils' poor season under sacked boss David Moyes.

    "It is difficult following someone like Sir Alex Ferguson, who was so successful for over 25 years, but the players have got to look at themselves," says the Scot, who made 485 appearances for United between 1974 and 1988.

    "They needed to stand up and be counted and they have fallen well below their standards. There are only two or three players who can say they have played up to standard.

    "I'm sure the players will feel bad and be looking at themselves. Two managers - Tommy Docherty and Ron Atkinson - were sacked while I was at Old Trafford and I felt terrible. I was part of the reason why they got sacked because the team I was in didn't play well enough. They will all be feeling bad - it is not nice when someone loses their job."

    The Scot managed to get his hands on the Community Shield - only the second honour of his managerial career after winning the third-tier title with Preston in 2000 - as United beat Wigan in the season's traditional curtain-raiser at Wembley.
