GET INVOLVED: Who should replace Moyes?
Barry, Oxford, via text: Man Utd failed to replace Scholes, Keane and Giggs years ago. This decline has been waiting to happen. Feel sorry for David Moyes.
Like a sort of 'around the grounds', here is Sportsday's 'around the newspapers' to see how they reacted to Manchester United's sacking of David Moyes:
Daily Mail:, external End of an error: Five people to blame for Moyes' early demise at Old Trafford
The Guardian:, external Ferguson's chosen one has missed every realistic target at Man Utd
The Independent:, external Decision to sack Moyes was made in February.
Daily Mirror:, external He knew Manchester United was a poisoned chalice, but had to take it, says football writer Oliver Holt
Less than a week after their 4-1 hammering at the hands of Manchester City, David Moyes had what seemed to be the perfect opportunity to bounce back - a home game against West Bromwich Albion.
After all, the Baggies had not beaten United since 1984 and not won at Old Trafford since December 1978. But it all went wrong for Moyes as the visitors earned a deserved 2-1 win and United produced a lacklustre performance which started ringing the alarm bells among home fans.
Former Manchester United striker Michael Owen:, external Huge news at Old Trafford but with the summer looming and a huge transfer kitty available, United had to be 100% Moyes was the right man.
Everton and Republic of Ireland defender Shane Duffy:, external Sad to see Moyes get sacked. He give me a chance to make my dream come true to play for Everton, so I can never say a bad word about him.
Football Association statement: Nottingham Forest's Dexter Blackstock has been charged with multiple breaches of FA Rule E8(b) for misconduct in relation to betting.
Blackstock has until Monday 28 April 2014 to respond to the charge.
BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty
Lots of talk about "the Manchester United way" and stability as the counter argument to the sacking of manager David Moyes less than a year into a six-year contract.
No club has a "way" in the modern Premier League era. There is no time to have one when the rewards for success are so great and the penalties for failure so harsh.
If results are poor, if expectations are not met, the manager will lose his job.
There was also talk of "The Liverpool Way" but the bottom line is always results. In a similar echo of a manager being unable to grasp the scale of his job, Roy Hodgson soon found his bags packed and outside the door at Anfield when he did not get results.
Rian Hoskins:, external Players have under performed but Moyes has to take a big share of the blame. Questionable tactics and stalled in the summer.
Matthew Scott:, external Everyone saying Moyes needed time to rebuild the squad. Fergie won the league last season with the same squad minus Mata!
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher speaking to Sky Sports:
"It was always going to be difficult but it hasn't gone well - it has been disastrous season. It was inevitable.
"David Moyes as a manager - these seven months have been terrible, but he did a great job at Everton and Preston. He will come back as a manager."
BBC Sport pundit Robbie Savage
"If United don't spend £100m-£150m in the summer then I'm afraid they will be in the same position next season because that squad at present is not good enough."
Manchester United confirm , externalthat Ryan Giggs will "assume first-team responsibility until a permanent manager is appointed".
The 40-year-old player-coach's appointment was announced shortly after he arrived at United's Carrington training ground this morning.
Pete in Reading, via text on 81111: Fergie's first 3 seasons were very bad.11th, 2nd, 11th. Were they right to keep Ferguson? Are they right to sack Moyes? I think the players are also to blame, although Moyes should've maybe kept 1 or 2 coaches from Fergies time. Not a sackable offence in my view, should have been given more time. Now the stability mantra is gone, what next? Look at Leeds and Newcastle and realise that there are many big clubs who would beg for 7th place.
Where to start with the low points total of David Moyes's reign at Manchester United? It is fair to say the troughs outweighed the peaks for the ex-Everton boss after he replaced Sir Alex Ferguson last summer.
After a mixed start to the campaign, the first major disappointment came across the city at Etihad Stadium. The Scot's first Manchester derby ended with a crushing 4-1 defeat at the hands of neighbours Manchester City.
Sir Alex Ferguson must take a share of the blame for David Moyes's disastrous reign as Manchester United manager, believes BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty.
"The sacking of the 50-year-old will also be a personal embarrassment for Ferguson," says Phil. "His endorsement of Moyes, a manager he saw in his own younger image and likeness, has proved to be a flawed one."
BBC Sport's Ben Smith at Carrington
"In the last few minutes, Richard Bevan, chief executive of the League Managers' Association, has arrived to deal with Moyes's compensation deal."
What a difference a year makes, eh? David Moyes has been sacked exactly a year to the day after Manchester United won the Premier League title with a convincing 3-0 win against Aston Villa.
Simon, Wilmslow., via text: Pundits saying this isn't the way Man Utd do business. It obviously is the way they do business. Also, why call Moyes a winner when he has never won anything? (Charity Shield excepted). Should have at least let him finish the season.

Andy Mitten, editor of Manchester United fanzine United We Stand, on BBC Radio 5 live: "It hasn't worked out - and it is sad it has come to this. I think he will have a good future in football but not at Manchester United.
"Manchester United fans wanted him to do well but it hasn't worked out. It has been a very poor season and some of the defeats have been horrendous. It is the right decision."
OptaJoe:, external 57 - This is Manchester United's lowest points total through 34 league fixtures since 1990-91 (56).
Robbie Savage

"I think Moyes will bounce back. Looking at Everton, Newcastle, Spurs, I think that type of club is what he is suited to. Manchester United was one step too far for him.
"We will have to wait and see if the new manager gets money. Whether it is Jurgen Klopp, Diego Simeone, Antonio Conte, Van Gaal - they are going to need £100m to improve that squad because some of the players that they have got there now have been so bad it is embarrassing."
