    Former Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe says he is "devastated" to miss out on Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad. The 31-year-old, who moved to Major League Soccer club Toronto FC at the end of February, tells BBC Radio 5 live: "It's hard to even find words to describe how I am feeling.

    "I felt I had done enough. I feel sharper than ever and I have been on form and scored goals. To miss out, I feel devastated. I didn't really feel I had to sell myself to the manager. I had a situation at the 2012 Euros where I lost my dad and I had decision to make. But I chose to go back out to Poland and Ukraine because I know how important it is to play for your country."

    Brighton & Hove Albion accept the resignation of head coach Oscar Garcia. The 41-year-old led Brighton to the Championship play-offs but their hopes of winning promotion to the Premier League were ended by a 6-2 aggregate defeat.

    A Brighton statement reads:, external "Oscar met with the club earlier today, to formally offer his resignation to the board, which has been accepted. He has also informed the club's players of his decision." Garcia was appointed in July 2013.

    England manager Roy Hodgson says England will head to Brazil on a wave of fresh optimism that they can do well at the World Cup. Hodgson adds: "We are right to work on the basis that there is a mood of positivity in the country if I understand it correctly.

    "We are going to try to feed off that, get our energy from it and to make certain we don't let people down. Whether it will take us to a World Cup final to win, who knows? But we will be trying our best."

    World number one Serena Williams is undecided whether she will defend her Italian Open title as she continues to recover from a thigh injury. The American, 32, withdrew ahead of her quarter-final in Madrid last week but has travelled to Rome, where she is due to begin her campaign on Wednesday.

    Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will play in Rome after missing Madrid. "I'm taking it a day at a time, we'll see as the week goes on," said 17-time Grand Slam champion Williams.

    Former England striker Alan Shearer says fans will be satisfied if Roy Hodgson's squad show progress at next month's World Cup in Brazil. Reacting to Hodgson's squad announcement, the 63-time capped Shearer says: "If they give their best, and the best is not good enough but they gave everything, I think that is all England fans want to see.

    "There is not a huge amount of expectation for England to go there and win it, but there is expectation for England to go there and show progression."

    Aston Villa announce that their end of season dinner, planned for Tuesday, has been cancelled. The decision comes after owner Randy Lerner said that the Premier League club is being put up for sale.

    Villa finished 15th in the table after losing seven of the last nine league games.

    Southampton striker Rickie Lambert says it has been a "hell of a journey" to be named in the England World Cup squad via the likes of Macclesfield, Stockport, Rochdale and Bristol Rovers.

    The 32-year-old was playing in a League Two play-off semi-final for Rovers seven years ago but, having scored 16 goals for Saints this campaign he is on the plane to Brazil looking to add to his two England goals.

    "My career on the whole has been so many ups and downs but the last five years, the way it has gone, I could never have dreamt it," adds Lambert. "Each year it has been getting better and better and that has been topped off with getting called up for the World Cup."
