Louis Edgell on Twitter:, external Roy Hodgson should be squeezing Andy Carroll and his locks into the squad. Better in the air and has youth on his side compared to Rickie Lambert.

Chris Finnegan on Twitter:, external We should pick the best 23 players we have to try and win. With England that includes young players but also Ashley Cole and Michael Carrick.

George Sambrook on Twitter:, external People mention experience when the most experience players have is losing on penalties. Fearless youth is what's needed!

Mark Kelly on Facebook: England will make the biggest mistake ever and bring in all the new blood and forget their old guard

Sean Hawker on Facebook: Anyone saying Rooney shouldn't go needs a wake up call? Carried an underperforming United team on his own this season and is still England's best player and soon to be top scorer.

Adam Matthew Peckitt on Facebook: Think Hull City players, like Curtis Davies and Tom Huddlestone, will get overlooked again as per usual.

A suited and booted Roy Hodgson looks relaxed as he turns up in a sleek saloon (surely a Vauxhall?) to tell the media about his World Cup selection. He smiles broadly for the assembled cameras, shakes hands with several important-looking characters, before disappearing into the building where he will face plenty of tough questions in less than 45 minutes.

Will Southampton striker Rickie Lambert be one of the 23 names with a seat on the plane heading to Brazil next month? He hopes so.

"It won't just be the biggest thing of my life right now, when I'm 70 it will be something to look back on and tell the grandchildren for the 100th time, even if they don't want to listen," the Liverpudlian tells BBC Radio Solent ahead of the England squad announcement.

"I will always be able to say I went to a World Cup. It means as much to me as it would do anyone else."

Si Hawkes on Twitter:, external England manager Roy Hodgson can't drop Ashley Cole for 'youth' and then stick with Frank Lampard. He needs to commit to the young players.

Joey on Twitter:, external Definitely feel the England squad should focus on youth with a view to building experience for future World Cups.

Jason Drawmer on Twitter:, external Young players will only learn from playing as many games as possible. Our best chance is with a balanced squad.

  17. England World Cup squadpublished at 13:20 British Summer Time 12 May 2014

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

"Plenty of cries for England manager Roy Hodgson to go with youth but he must strike a balance - past history will tell him the verdict on World Cup failure will not be watered down because it was achieved with young players. He is, however, lucky to have a fine pool of young English talent to consider."

Former England captain Gary Lineker on Twitter:, external Read a lot of newspaper columns over the last couple of days, headed 'This is who I would take to Rio'....... Who cares?

  19. England World Cup squadpublished at 13:12 British Summer Time 12 May 2014

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

"Great anticipation ahead of Roy Hodgson's announcement of England's World Cup squad. The Vauxhall factory in Luton may not be as swish as Sven-Goran Eriksson's Cafe Royal squad unveiling in 2006 but still huge interest. Hodgson has hinted at trusting to youth by going for Southampton's Luke Shaw ahead of Ashley Cole and Everton's Ross Barkley will be another hoping to get his chance to make an impact in Brazil."

Which players should be on the England plane to Brazil? And who should be planning a holiday? Tweet #bbcworldcup, external

Elliot Byrne on Twitter:, external I don't think England should expect anything from this tournament, give the young players experience and prepare for 2018.

Tom Heath on Twitter:, external Everyone agrees we won't win the World Cup so use it purely to plan for the future.

Onat Mansur on Twitter:, external Picking in-form players is fine but this is the World Cup - you need a balance. Experience shouldn't be underestimated.
