    Mark Cavendish admitted he was not sure whether he had edged a thrilling sprint finish after winning the Tour of California's first stage in Sacramento.

    The Omega Pharma-Quick-Step rider beat Germany's John Degenkolb after 193km of racing to earn a 10-second bonus.

    The Manxman said: "This is the first time in my career I really had no idea. I had to wait a little bit until they confirmed. So, I'm super happy."

    We have welcomed a special visitor to BBC Sport towers today - the Premier League trophy. Victorious Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany graciously allowed the prize to leave his sight for a short while this morning, but it will be returned to the Belgian and his team-mates ahead of their parade in Manchester city centre later today.

    Paris St-Germain striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is voted France's players' player of the year for the second season in a row.

    The 32-year-old scored 25 league goals as PSG won the Ligue 1 title with a record 86 points, as well as scoring 10 goals in eight Champions League games.

    "For the second year in a row, it's a great honour," says the Sweden skipper. "I think this has been my best ever season."

    Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton thinks Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole would have been "half-expecting" to be left out of Roy Hodgson's World Cup squad.

    The Confederation of African Football expresses its "deep sorrow" after at least 15 people were killed in a stampede at a match in DR Congo.

    Reports say the trouble began after police fired tear gas in the crowded stadium, causing panic. More than 20 people were injured.

    Local fans were unhappy after the home team, ASV Club, were defeated 1-0 by Tout Puissant Mazembe from Lubumbashi.

    Miami Dolphins fine safety Don Jones after he made negative comments on Twitter about Michael Sam, the NFL's first openly gay player.

    Sam, 24, was picked by St Louis Rams in the NFL draft and shortly afterwards Jones tweeted "horrible".

    The posts were taken down, before 23-year-old Jones was fined an undisclosed amount and excused from team activities until he completes educational training.

    Manchester City will celebrate their Premier League title success with an open-top parade around the city - like they did in 2012.

    Manchester City will celebrate their Premier League win later with a special ceremony in the city's Albert Square.

    Highlights from the season will be screened from 17:00 BST, with the team showing the trophy to fans from 18:00 to 18:30.

    An open top bus will then take the team from Albert Square on a one-mile route through the city centre.

    Liverpool have made a bid for Southampton captain Adam Lallana, reports BBC Radio Solent.

    Midfielder Lallana, 26, has been a key member of Saints' side this season, scoring 10 goals in 42 appearances and earning three England caps.

    "I'm ambitious. I want to one day play in the Champions League," said Lallana earlier this month.

    Gloucester chief executive Stephen Vaughan says it was a "tremendously difficult decision" to part company with director of rugby Nigel Davies.

    "Nigel is a man who I personally have come to like and respect very much during my time at the club. He has worked tirelessly at his role over the past two seasons, he has been an excellent ambassador for the club and understands the expectation and levels we need to be performing at," says Vaughan.

    "However, playing performances and results during 2013-14 were a big disappointment to everyone at the club. As a result, the board has decided that the future interests of the team would be best served with a different individual in charge of team affairs."

    Aston Villa chairman Randy Lerner announces he has put the Premier League club up for sale.

    The American assumed control of Villa in 2006 after a £62.6m takeover was agreed with the club's board.

    "I have come to know well that fates are fickle in the business of English football. And I feel that I have pushed mine well past the limit," he says in a statement.

    "The last several seasons have been week in, week out battles and having now come through this last season unfortunately limping amidst very meaningful injuries and constant sale rumours, I feel further that now is the time for me to look for new ownership and thus new leadership."
