    "People can talk about my driving or how I'm swinging the club, but mentally, I just feel like I'm in a really good place, and I think that's what I'm really happy about," says the 25-year-old.

    Play at Valhalla, Kentucky, starts on Thursday when McIlroy will bid for a fourth major title.

  10. Improvements for injured Blues centre

    Cardiff Blues reveal Wales centre Owen Williams is making "positive progress" after sustaining a serious neck injury.

    The 22-year-old suffered significant damage to his cervical vertebrae and spinal cord that required surgery during the inaugural World Club 10s competition in Singapore in July.

    "Owen will be progressing to sitting up over the coming few weeks," the club say in a statement, adding Williams has improved mobility in both his arms.

    And so...Blackpool have a goalkeeper. After all the headlines surrounding the Championship club's late composition of a squad, the spot between the sticks is filled by Joe Lewis.

    The 26-year-old signs from Cardiff City on a season-long loan and will be eligible to make his debut for the club against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The Seasiders also have an option to make the deal permanent at a later date.

  13. Women's World Cup latest

    A score late in the first half has given Ireland hope in their Women's World Cup meeting with New Zealand.

    Heather O'Brien powered over under the posts to leave Ireland 8-7 down at the break against the defending world champions. The number eight capitalised on some fine setup play by the Irish forwards.

    Both sides were victorious in their opening Pool matches of the tournament.

  14. Redknapp thrilled with Mutch capture

    Mutch says he was "delighted" when QPR offered him an instant route back to the Premier League and he becomes the Rs third major signing of the summer.

    "Jordon's a fine young player, with a big, big future," says boss Harry Redknapp. "He's already shown what he can do at this level with Cardiff last season with a decent goals return - and this move will provide him with a great platform to take his game on to the next level."

    Defenders Rio Ferdinand and Stephen Caulker have also signed on at Loftus Road this summer.

  15. Rangers Mutch improved

    That is Loftus Road and that Jordon Mutch. Yes, a fans' favourite at Cardiff City departs for Queens Park Rangers.

    The 22-year-old signs a four-year deal and moves for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the region of £6m.

    Mutch scored seven goals and notched five assists for the Bluebirds as they were relegated from the Premier League in 2013-14.

  16. McIlroy ready for Valhalla challenge

    On a more serious note, world number one Rory McIlroy has been talking to the media and says he is full of confidence for the final major of the year after back-to-back wins.

    "I said at the start of the year that golf was looking for someone to put their hand up and sort of become one of the dominant players in the game," he says.

    "I felt like I had the ability to do that, and it's just nice to be able to win a few tournaments and get back to where I feel like I should be, which is near the top of the World Rankings and competing in majors and winning golf tournaments."

    Rickie Fowler is the new leader of the long drive competition at Valhalla ahead of the PGA Championship on Thursday.

    The long-drive tournament sees players thump one tee shot as far as they can, with efforts measured if they land on the fairway. Just the 328 yards for Fowler. Bang.

    Celtic will be without the suspended Efe Ambrose for the second leg of the Champions League third-round qualifier against Legia Warsaw at Murrayfield on Wednesday.

  20. Liverpool's hefty offer

    Liverpool have offered £16m plus a season-long loan of attacking midfielder Suso in exchange for Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno.

    The 22-year-old is much sought after by Brendan Rodgers according to Spanish newspaper Marca.

    Moreno, at just 5ft 7in, broke through in Sevilla's 'B' team in 2011 and has three caps for Spain.

    So England have won handsomely against Spain, Wales were well beaten by Australia, now it is over to Ireland in Tuesday's Women's World Cup action.

    A nice easy second game for them against the defending champions - New Zealand.

    Ireland, undaunted by the All Blacks, have started well and the score remains at 0-0 after 10 minutes in Paris.

    The Scot takes over from Adel Amrouche who was fired just hours after Kenya's elimination from the African Nations Cup qualifiers on Sunday.

    Williamson, 52, had been managing Kenyan champions Gor Mahia, and also had spells in charge of Chester and Plymouth Argyle in England.

    "London plumber Marlie Packer impressed in the seven shirt, with two tries to her name giving head coach Gary Street plenty to ponder.

    "However under pressure in the second half the England defensive line faltered allowing Spain to score the first try against the Red Roses in Paris. Whilst the England attack remains potent, their defence will remain untested until they meet the higher ranked teams."

  27. Tearful farewell for Valbuena

    It was a tearful farewell for France playmaker Mathieu Valbuena as he said his goodbyes to Marseille on Tuesday.

    The 29-year-old held a news conference to explain his decision to leave the club he joined in 2006 and helped to the 2010 Ligue 1 title for Dynamo Moscow.

    "It was a carefully thought-out decision," he says. "I am ambitious and I want to help them progress. I did not choose to come here by default."

    Nottingham Forest owner and chairman Fawaz Al Hasawi responds to Stuart Pearce's disappointment at the sale of Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow, saying he was involved in the decision-making process.

    Pearce appeared annoyed when asked about the two players joining Newcastle - insisting that they had been allowed to leave against his advice.

    Al Hasawi says in a statement: "The manager and I openly discussed the proposed sale of Karl and Jamaal and he was aware of the negotiations throughout."

    Wales' hopes of reaching the Women's Rugby World Cup semi-finals are ended as they are beaten 25-3 by Australia.

    Tries from Sharni Williams and Tricia Brown helped the dominant Wallaroos build a 17-0 half-time lead. Brown claimed a second score shortly after the restart to put the result beyond doubt, while Wales' only points came from a Robyn Wilkins penalty.

    Wales now have little more than pride to play for when they face South Africa in their final pool match on Saturday.

  33. Man Utd sign young goalkeeper

    FK Vojvodina confirm a deal has been finalised with Manchester United for the sale of goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic.

    Club president Zoran Scepanovic says the 17-year-old will move to Old Trafford next year and will continue to represent the Serbian club.

    Milinkovic stands at 6ft 7in and has represented his country at under-19 level.

    Ahead of the final major of the year - the PGA Championship - which starts on Thursday, a long-drive competition has been run.

    The long-drive event was a fixture at PGA Championships of old, but has not been run since 1984 and of the players choosing to take part so far this year, Adam Scott leads the way on 320 yards.

    A ball has to rest on the fairway to count and each player gets just one attempt. John Daly is up soon. Boom.

    Barcelona have made Bayern Munich centre-back Jerome Boateng their number one target for the summer as they bid to strengthen their back line following the retirement of Carles Puyol.

    Boateng, 25, starred for Germany at the World Cup and Marca reports his value of £30m does not put Barca off. The deal could be tied up swiftly as interest from Real Madrid is pressurising their Catalan rivals into committing.

  41. Costa Rica player borrows fan's shirt

    Costa Rica international Celso Borgeshad to borrow a shirt from a fan to play in a Swedish league match for his club AIK.

    The midfielder had been omitted from the side after he was subject of a transfer bid from French Ligue 1 outfit Evian and his kit had not been packed. Borges then borrowed a shirt from an AIK fan, known only as 'Luis', for the match against IFK Gothenburg.

    "I'm proud to have helped the team I love," says Luis after AIK's 2-0 win.

    And it's Australia who have dealt with the conditions best, with tries from Sharni Williams and Tricia Brown.

    Northampton Town sign Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Jordan Archer on loan until the January transfer window.

    Archer, 21, has yet to play for the Spurs first team, but spent a lengthy spell on loan at Wycombe Wanderers in 2012-13, making 27 appearances.

    If at first you don't succeed, try something else.

    That seems to be Chelsea's approach as after Atletico Madrid's Joao Miranda decided he was staying put, the Blues have honed in on signing Raphael Varane from Real Madrid according to the Daily Star.

    Blues boss Jose Mourinho handed the French international his debut during his time in charge at the Bernabeu, and is keen on the 21-year-old as a potential replacement for David Luiz.

    At the Women's Rugby World Cup USA picked up their first win of the tournament at the second attempt - beating Kazakhstan 47-7 in France.

    A bit of a demolition job there then and Wales are currently 17-0 down to Australia.

  48. Head injury change welcomed

    Leading brain injury charity Headway believe new Premier League concussion rules are a "significant" step forward.

    New laws for the 2014-15 season will call on club doctors to decide if a player who has sustained a head injury can continue - not team managers.

    In a statement, Headway say they are "delighted" with the move to take the decision away from managers.

  50. A forgotten man?

    Jack Rodwell burst into the Everton first team and at 16 years and 284 days, became the youngest player to represent the club in Europe when he featured against AZ Alkmaar in 2008.

    He amassed 109 appearances for the Blues and earned two England caps before a £12m move to Manchester City in the summer of 2012.

    In two years at the Etihad Stadium though, Rodwell made just 25 appearances, started just 10 games and added only one further cap to his international collection.

  51. Burnley chase more deals

    Burnley "definitely need bodies" ahead of the news season according to manager Sean Dyche, who says operating in the Premier League transfer market is a difficult challenge.

    The promoted side face Chelsea in their opening game on 18 August and have made six signings so far this summer.

    "There's a few getting closer and closer and we're working hard to get them over the line," says Dyche. The frustration is that for 18 months we had no real money to speak of that we could use in the market.

    "Now we have some money but the market is running away from us again because we have the smallest budget in the Premier League."

    The signing of Rodwell, 23, is Sunderland's fifth of the summer and he joins for a fee in the region of £10m.

    Middlesbrough are set to complete the signing of Huddersfield midfielder Adam Clayton for an initial £1.5m, reports the Gazette.

    Senior club sources have reportedly told the newspaper that after weeks of wrangling they have agreed a deal that with add-ons and bonuses could rise to £2m for the West Yorkshire side.

    Clayton has scored 12 goals in 92 appearances for Town.

    Ollie Hynd claims the 400m freestyle S8 gold as day two of the IPC Swimming European Championships in Eindhoven began with more Great Britain medals.

    Paralympic, Commonwealth and world champion Hynd, 19, won in four minutes 31.66 seconds, with team-mate Josef Craig taking bronze in the same race.

    There were further golds for Hannah Russell (100m backstroke S12) and Steph Millward (400m freestyle S9). Amy Marren finished second behind Millward to take silver.

    Spain coach Vicente del Bosque pays tribute to retiring midfielder Xavi, saying it will be hard to find his equal.

    The 34-year-old Xavi announced his international retirement earlier on Tuesday and Del Bosque says: "I would like to express my appreciation for a fantastic player.

    "We are losing a unique player from the national team and it will be hard to find his equal. He has been a key figure in the team's playing style which has brought us so much success. We will miss him both on and off the pitch."

  59. New rules on head injuries

    Real Madrid's Angel Di Maria has instructed his agent to tie up a move to Paris St-Germain, dashing Manchester United's hopes of signing him.

    The Argentina international, 26, was reportedly a key target for United, but AS reports his agent Jorge Mendes met Real Madrid president Florentino Perez for lunch on Monday and a move to PSG will soon follow.

    Di Maria will earn £130,000 a week.

  64. BCCI unhappy with Anderson ruling

    India write to the International Cricket Council to express their disappointment after England's James Anderson was found not guilty of a breach of conduct.

    Anderson, 32, was cleared of abusing and pushing India's Ravindra Jadeja during the first Test at Trent Bridge.

    Only ICC chief executive Dave Richardson can appeal against the verdict but Sanjay Patel, the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has denied the tourists have asked him to do so.

  65. F1 boss Ecclestone pays to end bribery trial

    A German court agrees to end the bribery trial of Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone in exchange for a $100m (£60m) payment from him.

    Earlier today, German prosecutors accepted the offer - which was based on an existing provision in German law - from the 83-year-old billionaire who dominates motor racing.

    He went on trial in April, accused of paying a German banker 33m euros (£26m; $44m) to ensure that a company he favoured could buy a stake in F1. He denies any wrongdoing.

    "The fight against racism is a high priority for Uefa," says a statement on Uefa's website.

    The South Wales Echo reports City are the only club to so far bid for Sane and Birmingham have confirmed Adeyemi has handed in a transfer request.

    The Football League season gets under way this weekend and Blackpool are still scrabbling to get an 18-man squad together. They are still to sign a professional goalkeeper, but the Blackpool Gazette reports that boss Jose Riga could be a busy man in the coming days.

    The newspaper says the club are set to sign Everton midfielder John Lundstram and hope to follow it up by bringing in striker Ishmael Miller. Still no sign of a keeper just yet though.

    The 31-year-old Paraguay striker moves for an initial fee of about £3.2m.

    New Zealand fly-half Dan Carter will miss at least half of their Rugby Championship campaign with a hairline crack to his fibula.

    He will miss New Zealand's opening two Championship fixtures against Australia as well as a Test against Argentina in Napier on 6 September.

    Scans have revealed that Defoe has a strain, thought to have been suffered against DC United last week.

    Defoe, who has 11 goals this season, is out of Wednesday's MLS All-Star game, having already missed Toronto's 2-0 victory over Montreal on Saturday.

    Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers hopes Philippe Coutinho will sign a new contract soon.

    The Brazilian midfielder moved to Anfield from Inter Milan in an £8.5m transfer 18 months ago.

    "I am not sure when it will be done. I haven't spoken to any of the directors in the last few days, so I am not sure where we are on that, but obviously he is someone we want to tie up for a period of time," Rodgers says.

    Nottingham Forest manager Stuart Pearce says defender Jamaal Lascelles and goalkeeper Karl Darlow were sold to Newcastle United against his wishes.

    While the Premier League club have not announced the deals, Pearce confirmed on BBC Radio Nottingham that they have signed for Newcastle and immediately been loaned back.

    "The players were sold without my sanction," says Pearce. "I can't defend the decision to sell them because it wasn't my decision."

    Poor Ashley Cole. The former Chelsea left-back is only months into his time as an AS Roma player, but his first team photo has seen him develop into something of an internet phenomenon. He was snapped a little further away from his new team-mates looking slightly forlorn.

    Atletico Madrid are ready to make a £25m bid to sign Mexico striker Javier Hernandez, 26, and Japan midfielder Shinji Kagawa, 25, from Manchester United. (Guardian)

    The Ligue 2 fixture marked the first time that a woman had taken charge of a professional men's team in the top two tiers of a European league.

    England flanker Maggie Alphonsi says the "pain" of three final defeats in a row will help drive them to World Cup glory in France.

    England have lifted the trophy once, in 1994, but have lost the past three finals to New Zealand. They have made 12 changes for their second Pool A match, against Spain (14:45 BST) on Tuesday.

    Alphonsi says morale was high, telling BBC Sport: "I'm very confident that we are ready to win the World Cup."
