    Barcelona have made Bayern Munich centre-back Jerome Boateng their number one target for the summer as they bid to strengthen their back line following the retirement of Carles Puyol.

    Boateng, 25, starred for Germany at the World Cup and Marca reports, external his value of £30m does not put Barca off. The deal could be tied up swiftly as interest from Real Madrid is pressurising their Catalan rivals into committing.

    Costa Rica international Celso Borges had to borrow a shirt from a fan to play in a Swedish league match for his club AIK.

    The midfielder had been omitted from the side after he was subject of a transfer bid from French Ligue 1 outfit Evian and his kit had not been packed. Borges then borrowed a shirt from an AIK fan, known only as 'Luis', for the match against IFK Gothenburg.

    "I'm proud to have helped the team I love," says Luis after AIK's 2-0 win.

    Australia defender Jason Davidson is West Brom's seventh signing of the summer.

    The 23-year-old left-back signs from Dutch side Heracles on a two-year deal.

    Craig Gardner, Joleon Lescott, Chris Baird, Brown Ideye, Sebastien Pocognoli and Andre Wisdom have already signed for Alan Irvine's side.

    At the Women's Rugby World Cup USA picked up their first win of the tournament at the second attempt - beating Kazakhstan 47-7 in France.

    A bit of a demolition job there then and Wales are currently 17-0 down to Australia.

    Leading brain injury charity Headway believe new Premier League concussion rules are a "significant" step forward.

    New laws for the 2014-15 season will call on club doctors to decide if a player who has sustained a head injury can continue - not team managers.

    In a statement, Headway say they are "delighted" with the move to take the decision away from managers.

    Jack Rodwell burst into the Everton first team and at 16 years and 284 days, became the youngest player to represent the club in Europe when he featured against AZ Alkmaar in 2008.

    He amassed 109 appearances for the Blues and earned two England caps before a £12m move to Manchester City in the summer of 2012.

    In two years at the Etihad Stadium though, Rodwell made just 25 appearances, started just 10 games and added only one further cap to his international collection.

    The promoted side face Chelsea in their opening game on 18 August and have made six signings so far this summer.

    The signing of Rodwell, 23, is Sunderland's fifth of the summer and he joins for a fee in the region of £10m.

    Ollie Hynd claims the 400m freestyle S8 gold as day two of the IPC Swimming European Championships in Eindhoven began with more Great Britain medals.

    Paralympic, Commonwealth and world champion Hynd, 19, won in four minutes 31.66 seconds, with team-mate Josef Craig taking bronze in the same race.

    There were further golds for Hannah Russell (100m backstroke S12) and Steph Millward (400m freestyle S9). Amy Marren finished second behind Millward to take silver.

    Spain coach Vicente del Bosque pays tribute to retiring midfielder Xavi, saying it will be hard to find his equal.

    The 34-year-old Xavi announced his international retirement earlier on Tuesday and Del Bosque says: "I would like to express my appreciation for a fantastic player.

    "We are losing a unique player from the national team and it will be hard to find his equal. He has been a key figure in the team's playing style which has brought us so much success. We will miss him both on and off the pitch."

    "The Premier League is to introduce new rules on how to deal with head injuries from the start of the 2014-15 season.

    "A player suffering a head injury must now leave the pitch and the club doctor must decide if a player is capable of continuing, not the team management.

    "Home teams also have to have a third "tunnel" doctor on matchdays."
