    New Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock expects Manchester United's Wilfried Zaha to be his first signing since returning to the club.

    Warnock, 65, was appointed Palace boss on Wednesday, four years after finishing his first spell at Selhurst Park, and he hopes to welcome back Zaha, who started his career with the Eagles.

    "I did speak to him last night," Warnock tells Talksport. "I spent half an hour telling him why I want him to come back and I'm optimistic we are going to do it today."

    Zaha, 21, made only two league appearances for United last season.

    Former Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia retires from football after a heart condition was detected at a routine medical.

    The Spaniard, 37, spent eight years at Arsenal between 2004 and 2012, but after a spell at Watford was due to sign for Italian side Cagliari earlier this month.

    But the Serie A side decided not to go ahead with the deal after tests showed he has apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart tissue, external that causes it to thicken and can lead to sudden death.

    West Ham manager Sam Allardyce says he has the budget to bring in one new face to the club before the transfer window closes on Monday.

    The Hammers are unlikely to let anyone leave and Allardyce also tells his weekly news conference that he welcomes the forthcoming international break in order to aid the recovery of several players.

    "We still have Andy Carroll, Matt Jarvis, Carl Jenkinson, Kevin Nolan and James Collins out. Diafra Sakho tweaked his back on Tuesday too so we're not sure if he'll be fit for Saturday," says Allardyce.

    West Ham face Southampton at Upton Park on Saturday.

    Alonso, 32, retired from international duty yesterday and looks set to leave the Spanish capital after making 192 appearances.
