Wayne Rooney is favourite to be named as the new captain when England's first squad since the World Cup is announced at lunchtime.
Rooney was also named Manchester United skipper two weeks ago.
Arsenal's Calum Chambers is expected to be one of three uncapped players included by manager Roy Hodgson.
The defender, a £16m summer buy from Southampton, is likely to be called up alongside Tottenham's Danny Rose and Aston Villa midfielder Fabian Delph.
