  3. 'We have a few plates spinning'

West Brom boss Alan Irvine says he wants to make one more signing before the transfer window closes on 1 September.

Irvine, who has signed 10 players in the summer, is after another winger to complete his squad.

"We have a few plates spinning at the moment," says Irvine. "If you pin all your hopes on one player and that one goes wrong where do you turn?

"You have got to make sure there are other options. We have a preferred choice but that might not be the one which happens."

  4. Champions League draw reaction

    Football

Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta on Twitter: Dortmund again and two new and tough teams. I love playing Champions League. Come on Gunners.

  5. Champions League draw reaction

    Football

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers tells his club's official website: "Hopefully it was great for the supporters to sit and watch the draw for the first time in five years.

"To be back in it again, no matter who we were going to play, it was always going to be exciting. But to have Real Madrid in your group, the champions last season, is going to be special.

"I'm already thinking of Anfield on that night. But there are two other good teams in it along with us. It's a tough group but we'll really look forward to the challenge of getting out of the group."

  6. Palace close in on Zaha deal

    Football

    Neil Warnock

Crystal Palace are "very close" to completing the season-long loan signing of Wilfried Zaha from Manchester United, according to new manager Neil Warnock (pictured).

Zaha, 21, will return to Palace after just two appearances for United despite costing the Old Trafford club £15m.

"We're very close, we've agreed everything, there's just a few little bits insurance-wise," said Warnock. "The forms are signed from our end, and I've spoken to Wilfried."

  7. Thursday's Europa League action

Tottenham v AEL Limassol (19:45 BST)

Tottenham will be without Spanish striker Roberto Soldado for the second leg of their Europa League play-off tie against Cypriot side AEL Limassol.

    Mauricio Pochettino

Soldado scored in Mauricio Pochettino side's 2-1 win in the first leg, but will not play because of neck and back injuries.

Romanian defender Vlad Chiriches could feature for the first time this season after recovering from a back injury. Right-back Kyle Naughton returns following suspension, but Kyle Walker is ruled out with a hip problem.

  8. Welsh rugby row over

    Rugby Union

The long-running feud in Welsh rugby between the Welsh rugby union and the four regions has been settled, with the announcement of a new six-year Rugby Services Agreement.

Under the new agreement, the Wales head coach Warren Gatland will select a number of players to be dual-contracted, a move designed to ensure a core of Welsh internationals remain in Wales.

    Sam Warburton

A new selection policy has also been finalised, ruling that no player based overseas can play for Wales, although Gatland is able to make exceptions. The WRU will contribute 60% of the dual-contracts, with the regions 40%.

The regions will all receive an increase in funding from the union, as well as a one-off payment of £500,000. The agreement will mean British and Irish Lions captain Sam Warburton will now be able to resume club duties for Cardiff Blues.

  9. Champions League draw

Manuel Pellegrini's men face Bayern Munich, CSKA Moscow and Roma in Group E.

It seems the majority of you do indeed disagree with Andre Schurrle. He reckons Chelsea have a tough draw, but only 4% of you believe the Blues have the hardest route out of the group stages.

Chelsea face Schalke, Sporting Lisbon and Maribor in Group G.

  10. Thursday's Europa League action

Hull City v KSC Lokeren (19:45 BST)

Hull City boss Steve Bruce will once again give his fringe players a chance as they aim to overturn a 2-1 deficit in the second leg of their Europa League play-off with KSC Lokeren.

    Hull v KSC Lokeren

Bruce made wholesale changes to his squad for the 1-0 defeat in Belgium last week and should again start with defender Harry Maguire. Striker Yannick Sagbo could start after serving a two-game domestic ban.

Hodgson named four uncapped players in his 22-man squad but overlooked the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Nathan Dyer who have impressed as Swansea won their opening two games in the Premier League.

"I know he's never been here to the Liberty Stadium to watch them as England manager and he'd have to come and watch us first before he can pick anyone," said Monk ahead of West Brom's visit on Saturday. "If they work hard there's no excuse not to try and look at them."

Daniel Hodgkin: As a neutral hopefully we'll get Real Madrid, Dortmund, Liverpool and Roma in one group.

Liverpool are playing in the Champions League for the first time in five seasons and will be hoping the draw (16:45 BST) will be kind to them.

    Steven Gerrard

A favourable draw for the 2005 winners could see them playing Porto (Portugal), Basel (Switzerland) and Ludogorets Razgrad (Bulgaria).

The worst possible outcome would have them lining up against Real Madrid (Spain), Paris St-Germain (France) and Roma (Italy).

  51. Holtby uncertainty

Lewis Holtby admits he could be moving on from Tottenham Hotspur this summer because of a lack of first-team action at White Hart Lane.

The former Schalke midfielder has been linked with a return to the Bundesliga with Hamburg.

    Ben Smith

    BBC Sport at Old Trafford

"The lasting impression of that press conference was the obvious pride and delight that was written across Louis van Gaal's face throughout.

"He spoke at the start to reiterate that his new £60m signing must be a team player and with every answer Di Maria echoed that sentiment, so much so that Van Gaal actually mentioned how impressed he was by his new player's answers as the press conference went on.

"Di Maria said he had spoken to Ronaldo about the significance of the number seven shirt and the impression he gave out was that he was very much revelling in his role as Britain's most expensive footballer."

    Football

Manchester City are in the second pot for the Champions League draw (16:45 BST) and will be hoping to do better than last season when they were knocked out by Barcelona in the last-16 phase.

    Barcelona v Manchester City

A great draw for Manuel Pellegrini's side would see them facing Porto (Portugal), Athletic Bilbao (Spain) and Ludogorets Razgrad (Bulgaria).

However, there will be no smiles if the draw sees them grouped with Real Madrid (Spain), CSKA Moscow (Russia) and Roma (Italy)

  58. World Rowing Championships update

    Rowing

BBC Sport's Lawrence Barretto in Amsterdam: "Olympic champion Katherine Grainger, who will be part of the BBC rowing presentation team this week, tells me she's looking forward to seeing Britain's men's four of Alex Gregory, Andy Triggs Hodge, Moe Sbihi and George Nash, who are gold-medal favourites, in action this afternoon.

"We've seen the new-look men's four dominate every race they've done this season," she says. "They're talking very confidently and they feel they've improved in speed since we last saw them at the Lucerne World Cup.

More from Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, who has yet to win a game this season.

"I'm sorry to say that for the fans because they are amazing. We lost 4-0 at MK Dons and they were singing and supporting the players. It's fantastic that we have such fans and I hope we shall fulfil their expectations, but it's not done in one month."

Record signing Angel Di Maria explains his decision to move to the Premier League. He says: "Manchester United have already won many trophies and are a very big team. I have come to help raise the game and become an important team once again. I want to win many trophies with them.

"I'm very pleased to play for Manchester United. I like the team and I wanted to come here even though they're not playing in the Champions League. I want to help the team get into the Champions League. I'm pleased with the manager for choosing me to come to Manchester United."

  62. 'I only buy players that can improve our philosophy'

    Football

More from Louis van Gaal on Angel Di Maria: "I have said that I only buy players that can improve our philosophy. I have spoken already about his way of playing in the interests of the team that I like.

"He fits in our philosophy and I can change the system with him and maybe we will do that in the future, maybe in a match. At Real Madrid he didn't only play as a winger but also in midfield so that is also a reason why we are convinced he shall succeed."

  63. Van Gaal on Di Maria

    Football

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal describes what he expects from record signing Angel Di Maria.

"I'm very pleased that we can have such a class player in our squad," says Van Gaal. "But we have many class players and for me it's important he is a team player. That is what I am liking in Di Maria.

"Not only class, he can accelerate the game for us and can also play in the interest of the team. That's why we have chosen this player and I hope he shall give us good results but we cannot expect after two days' training sessions that he is the miracle. No, you have to work for the miracle and he knows that."

  68. Ryder Cup hope dwindling?

    Golf

A steady day for Scotland's Stephen Gallacher at the Italian Open as he chases the final qualifying spot available in Europe's Ryder Cup team.

American John Hahn and Northern Ireland's Gareth Maybin share the lead on five under.

European captain Paul McGinley will announce his three wildcard picks on Tuesday.

They would both be very happy if they were drawn in the same group as Basel (Switzerland), Athletic Bilbao (Spain) and Ludogorets Razgrad (Bulgaria).

However, their nightmare draw would see them facing Paris St-Germain (France), CSKA Moscow (Russia) and Roma (Italy).

Sam Parsons: Without doubt the worst England squad I have seen in my lifetime, overseen by arguably the worst ever England manager.

    Phil McNulty

BBC chief football writer in Brazil

"Wayne Rooney's appointment as England captain is the right choice by manager Roy Hodgson - not least because of a glaring lack of obvious alternatives for a post that still retains great significance and prestige.

"England's World Cup captain Steven Gerrard and deputy Frank Lampard have vacated the international stage, while the claims of goalkeeper Joe Hart and defender Gary Cahill could not come close to someone of Rooney's status and importance."

    Football

Wayne Rooney is "the right man", "right choice" and will show "enormous enthusiasm", according to Roy Hodgson who has selected the 28-year-old as England captain.

Steven Gerrard, David Beckham and Bryan Robson

"He has a lot to live up to because the previous captains of England have been top men. The Robsons, Beckhams, Gerrards, Lampards," says Hodgson.

"I found Wayne mature when I met him two years ago and the experiences have matured him even more with another 20 or 30 caps. He's the right choice, the right man and he'll show enormous enthusiasm and responsibility."

  86. 'Arsene assured me Chambers was ready'

    Football

Roy Hodgson reveals he talked with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger about whether he should include Gunners defender Calum Chambers in his England squad.

    Calum Chambers

The England boss checked Wenger was not "pushing" the 19-year-old "too quickly" and says "Arsene assured me he's ready for any challenge".

Hodgson adds: "Chambers jumps over the Under-21s but with 10 injuries and six of them in the defensive part of the field I didn't have the luxury of saying he could start in the Under-21s."

  87. 'I see no reason to be fearful'

    Football

After England's miserable World Cup showing that saw them finish bottom of their group, manager Roy Hodgson remains optimistic for the future of the national team.

He says: "I don't think there is any reason for trepidation. With these players we are bringing bringing into the squad, and don't forget there's no Theo Walcott, Ross Barkley or Adam Lallana, I see no reason for us to be fearful.

"It will be exciting but there will be some anxious moments to see how these players step up. We've been a bit unlucky that our first qualifier is arguably our hardest one [Switzerland away] and these players may not get the soft introduction they may have had."

  88. 'Being England captain is a dream'

    Football

New England captain Wayne Rooney tweets: Being named England captain is a dream and something I'll take great pride in doing.

    Wayne rooney graphic

In an extended statement, Rooney adds: "As a kid I always loved the occasion of watching a big England game on the television. Back then I had a burning ambition to play for my country. Now to be appointed captain is beyond my wildest dreams.

"I would like to thank Roy and the coaching staff for having the belief and confidence in me to do the job.

"I hope I will have the full backing of the fans. I am their type of player once I am on that pitch. My only thought is to win and give everything I have got. Sharing that desire will be the way I want to captain the team."

  89. 'Are you prepared for it?'

    Football

Roy Hodgson explains what he said to Wayne Rooney when he told him he would be his new England captain.

Hodgson says: "In the meeting we had face-to-face we sat down, I said to him 'as far as I'm concerned you're the captain, so the question may be do you want it and are you prepared for all it will entail?'. He is perfectly happy with that and perfectly happy to step forward and suffer whatever comes his way."

  90. 'It was Wayne's time and moment'

    Football

More from Roy Hodgson's news conference on his decision to name Wayne Rooney as England captain.

"When you name a captain it does go through your head that it will make it a lot harder if I had to drop him," says Hodgson.

"I don't think Wayne would expect me to keep him in the team just because he is captain. I'd like to think if it was necessary I would do it [drop him] and I'm pretty convinced he would accept it.

"We've got players like Joe Hart and Gary Cahill in that they are experienced players, not new to the international team and play for big clubs. It would be harsh on them to say Wayne was the only choice. But had I chosen them, it would have been unfair on Wayne Rooney - for most people it was his time and moment."

  91. 'The Ginger Pirlo'

    Football

Roy Hodgson has been talking about Newcastle midfielder Jack Colback, who has been called up to the England squad for the first time.

    Jack Colback

"I spoke to someone who knows him well and he called him The Ginger Pirlo (after Italian playmaker Andrea Pirlo) and it would be nice if he turned out like that.

"I was impressed with him last year and he has an awful lot to offer. He is a very talented player. Suddenly we have lost Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. Jack plays in a position where vacancies can quickly arise and we will see how he gets on."

  92. Hodgson on Rooney

More from Roy Hodgson on new England captain Wayne Rooney: "It has been said in the past the captaincy will take him on to a new level.

"With his 95 caps, goals and all the things he has done, what we've seen is his willingness to take responsibility. All I can hope is that he continues to play well and shoulders the responsibility as well as the captains before him.

"We were bitterly disappointed not to do well in the World Cup. We had high hopes dashed in 90 minutes really. We had been building up for a long time and it's more a chance to continue."

  93. 'Wayne is an obvious choice'

    Football

England boss Roy Hodgson explains his decision to choose Wayne Rooney as his new captain:

"I gave it a lot of thought but Wayne is an obvious choice. He deserves it - his commitment to the cause and his experience. He has captained England in the past and has that responsibility at Manchester United.

"I'm pleased to say I've been able to offer it to him. I've had a long conversation with him and he's prepared to accept the pressures that the England captaincy brings. It's important that the player wants to take on that enormous responsibility."
