West Brom boss Alan Irvine says he wants to make one more signing before the transfer window closes on 1 September.

Irvine, who has signed 10 players in the summer, is after another winger to complete his squad.

"We have a few plates spinning at the moment," says Irvine. "If you pin all your hopes on one player and that one goes wrong where do you turn?

"You have got to make sure there are other options. We have a preferred choice but that might not be the one which happens."

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers tells his club's official website: "Hopefully it was great for the supporters to sit and watch the draw for the first time in five years.

"To be back in it again, no matter who we were going to play, it was always going to be exciting. But to have Real Madrid in your group, the champions last season, is going to be special.

"I'm already thinking of Anfield on that night. But there are two other good teams in it along with us. It's a tough group but we'll really look forward to the challenge of getting out of the group."

Palace close in on Zaha deal

Crystal Palace are "very close" to completing the season-long loan signing of Wilfried Zaha from Manchester United, according to new manager Neil Warnock (pictured).

Zaha, 21, will return to Palace after just two appearances for United despite costing the Old Trafford club £15m.

"We're very close, we've agreed everything, there's just a few little bits insurance-wise," said Warnock. "The forms are signed from our end, and I've spoken to Wilfried."

Thursday's Europa League action

Tottenham will be without Spanish striker Roberto Soldado for the second leg of their Europa League play-off tie against Cypriot side AEL Limassol.

Soldado scored in Mauricio Pochettino side's 2-1 win in the first leg, but will not play because of neck and back injuries.

Romanian defender Vlad Chiriches could feature for the first time this season after recovering from a back injury. Right-back Kyle Naughton returns following suspension, but Kyle Walker is ruled out with a hip problem.

Welsh rugby row over

The long-running feud in Welsh rugby between the Welsh rugby union and the four regions has been settled, with the announcement of a new six-year Rugby Services Agreement.

Under the new agreement, the Wales head coach Warren Gatland will select a number of players to be dual-contracted, a move designed to ensure a core of Welsh internationals remain in Wales.

A new selection policy has also been finalised, ruling that no player based overseas can play for Wales, although Gatland is able to make exceptions. The WRU will contribute 60% of the dual-contracts, with the regions 40%.

The regions will all receive an increase in funding from the union, as well as a one-off payment of £500,000. The agreement will mean British and Irish Lions captain Sam Warburton will now be able to resume club duties for Cardiff Blues.

We asked for your votes on which English side had the toughest Champions League group. There is a clear winner, by a huge margin. A total of 73.9% of you said Manchester City.

Manuel Pellegrini's men face Bayern Munich, CSKA Moscow and Roma in Group E.

It seems the majority of you do indeed disagree with Andre Schurrle. He reckons Chelsea have a tough draw, but only 4% of you believe the Blues have the hardest route out of the group stages.

Thursday's Europa League action

Hull City boss Steve Bruce will once again give his fringe players a chance as they aim to overturn a 2-1 deficit in the second leg of their Europa League play-off with KSC Lokeren.

Bruce made wholesale changes to his squad for the 1-0 defeat in Belgium last week and should again start with defender Harry Maguire. Striker Yannick Sagbo could start after serving a two-game domestic ban.

New signing Michael Dawson is not eligible following his move from Tottenham this week.

It looks like Manchester City have the toughest task out of the four English sides. German champions Bayern Munich, Russian champions CSKA Moscow and Roma, runners-up in last season's Serie A, all await for Manuel Pellegrini's side.

Jose Mourinho will be smiling. Chelsea face Schalke (Germany), Sporting Lisbon (Portugal) and Slovenian champions Maribor, who knocked Celtic out in the play-off round. Schalke came third in the Bundesliga, while Sporting Lisbon came second in the Primeira Liga.

Liverpool and Arsenal will also be fancying their chances of finishing in the top two. Brendan Rodgers's side faces a mouth-watering tie against Real Madrid, and will be confident of overcoming the other two sides - Basel and Ludogorets Razgrad.

In a fairytale for the Bulgarian club, they will face Liverpool, Basel and Real Madrid in this season's Champions League.

Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad needed a centre-half to go in goal and save two penalties in the shoot-out to qualify for the Champions League. Well, what a reward. Real Madrid and Liverpool await them, along with Basel of Switzerland, in Group B.

APOEL Nicosia have the toughest task of all teams. They have to get out of a group containing Barcelona, Paris St-Germain and Ajax. Good luck, lads.

That would certainly be tough for Brendan Rodgers's side if that is repeated in the main event.

'Warnock has Palace's interests at heart'

Southampton defender Nathaniel Clyne has been talking about his former Selhurst Park manager Neil Warnock returning to Crystal Palace.

"I was pleased for Palace that Neil Warnock was named manager," Clyne tells BBC Radio Solent.

"He has the club's best interests at heart. When I was there he gave me my opportunity to play in the first team so for the youngsters there it will be good for them. He has experience and is good at getting the best out of players and hopefully he will do well at Palace."

Swansea City manager Garry Monk wants Roy Hodgson to attend the Liberty Stadium after none of his players were called up by the England manager for two forthcoming internationals.

Hodgson named four uncapped players in his 22-man squad but overlooked the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Nathan Dyer who have impressed as Swansea won their opening two games in the Premier League.

"I know he's never been here to the Liberty Stadium to watch them as England manager and he'd have to come and watch us first before he can pick anyone," said Monk ahead of West Brom's visit on Saturday. "If they work hard there's no excuse not to try and look at them."

A favourable draw for the 2005 winners could see them playing Porto (Portugal), Basel (Switzerland) and Ludogorets Razgrad (Bulgaria).

Wayne Rooney is "the right man", "right choice" and will show "enormous enthusiasm", according to Roy Hodgson who has selected the 28-year-old as England captain.

The England boss checked Wenger was not "pushing" the 19-year-old "too quickly" and says "Arsene assured me he's ready for any challenge".

Hodgson adds: "Chambers jumps over the Under-21s but with 10 injuries and six of them in the defensive part of the field I didn't have the luxury of saying he could start in the Under-21s."

'I see no reason to be fearful'

After England's miserable World Cup showing that saw them finish bottom of their group, manager Roy Hodgson remains optimistic for the future of the national team.

He says: "I don't think there is any reason for trepidation. With these players we are bringing bringing into the squad, and don't forget there's no Theo Walcott, Ross Barkley or Adam Lallana, I see no reason for us to be fearful.

"It will be exciting but there will be some anxious moments to see how these players step up. We've been a bit unlucky that our first qualifier is arguably our hardest one [Switzerland away] and these players may not get the soft introduction they may have had."

'Being England captain is a dream'

In an extended statement, Rooney adds: "As a kid I always loved the occasion of watching a big England game on the television. Back then I had a burning ambition to play for my country. Now to be appointed captain is beyond my wildest dreams.

'Are you prepared for it?'

Roy Hodgson explains what he said to Wayne Rooney when he told him he would be his new England captain.

Hodgson says: "In the meeting we had face-to-face we sat down, I said to him 'as far as I'm concerned you're the captain, so the question may be do you want it and are you prepared for all it will entail?'. He is perfectly happy with that and perfectly happy to step forward and suffer whatever comes his way."

'It was Wayne's time and moment'

"When you name a captain it does go through your head that it will make it a lot harder if I had to drop him," says Hodgson.

"I don't think Wayne would expect me to keep him in the team just because he is captain. I'd like to think if it was necessary I would do it [drop him] and I'm pretty convinced he would accept it.

"We've got players like Joe Hart and Gary Cahill in that they are experienced players, not new to the international team and play for big clubs. It would be harsh on them to say Wayne was the only choice. But had I chosen them, it would have been unfair on Wayne Rooney - for most people it was his time and moment."

'The Ginger Pirlo'

"I spoke to someone who knows him well and he called him The Ginger Pirlo (after Italian playmaker Andrea Pirlo) and it would be nice if he turned out like that.

"I was impressed with him last year and he has an awful lot to offer. He is a very talented player. Suddenly we have lost Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. Jack plays in a position where vacancies can quickly arise and we will see how he gets on."

New Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock expects Manchester United's Wilfried Zaha to be his first signing since returning to the club.

Warnock, 65, was appointed Palace boss on Wednesday, four years after finishing his first spell at Selhurst Park, and he hopes to welcome back Zaha, who started his career with the Eagles.

"I did speak to him last night," Warnock tells Talksport. "I spent half an hour telling him why I want him to come back and I'm optimistic we are going to do it today."

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino will make an attempt to take Manchester United and England striker Danny Welbeck on loan, reports the Daily Mail.

Castleford announce the signing of Bradford half-back Luke Gale on a two-year deal from next season.

Almunia retires over heart problem

Former Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia retires from football after a heart condition was detected at a routine medical.

The Spaniard, 37, spent eight years at Arsenal between 2004 and 2012, but after a spell at Watford was due to sign for Italian side Cagliari earlier this month.

But the Serie A side decided not to go ahead with the deal after tests showed he has apical hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart tissue that causes it to thicken and can lead to sudden death.

3-5-2 will work

BBC Sport pundit Pat Nevin thinks the 3-5-2 system deployed by Louis van Gaal will work at Old Trafford.

In his latest tactical analysis piece, Nevin says the system gives adaptable players such as Phil Jones and Adnan Januzaj the chance to become key to United.

Ex-Arsenal defender Martin Keown says Louis van Gaal's 3-5-2 system needs changing, because "it doesn't work".

Keown told BBC Radio 5 live that Manchester United's players were struggling with the formation.

"He's persisting with this three at the back and I don't believe the players are picking it up well enough; they don't seem to understand it," he said.

The i newspaper leads with Arsenal's Champions League win over Besiktas and says the club's recently acquired teenage centre-back Calum Chambers will be called into Roy Hodgson's England squad. The Three Lions face Norway in a friendly on Wednesday and their first European Championship qualifier against Switzerland on 8 September.

One new Hammer to come

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce says he has the budget to bring in one new face to the club before the transfer window closes on Monday.

The Hammers are unlikely to let anyone leave and Allardyce also tells his weekly news conference that he welcomes the forthcoming international break in order to aid the recovery of several players.

"We still have Andy Carroll, Matt Jarvis, Carl Jenkinson, Kevin Nolan and James Collins out. Diafra Sakho tweaked his back on Tuesday too so we're not sure if he'll be fit for Saturday," says Allardyce.

FA hopes to land Euro 2020 final

The Football Association is confident that Wembley could stage the final of Euro 2020 and has refused to rule out a bid to host Euro 2028.

FA general secretary Alex Horne hopes England's national stadium could stage the semi-finals and final in six years.

He feels the chances are boosted by Germany's focus on a bid for Euro 2024.

"We're really confident with our bid. We know what the Germans have been saying, that they're thinking about 2024. Nothing's confirmed," Horne said.

From the Champions League to the League Cup, and QPR boss Harry Redknapp said he gave some players a chance, only for them to waste it in the defeat to Burton Albion on Wednesday night.

"We came here - I picked a strong team on paper - with senior players, but they were poor and didn't take the opportunity," said the 67-year-old.

No such mistake for Premier League sides Stoke and Sunderland, who both notched 3-0 wins over Portsmouth and Birmingham respectively.

Elsewhere in the Champions League it was a big night for Spanish side Athletic Bilbao, who beat Rafa Benitez's Napoli to reach the Champions League group stages for the first time since 1998.

A 3-1 home win sealed a 4-2 aggregate passage for Ernesto Valverde's side, while Bayer Leverkusen romped to a 7-2 win over two legs against FC Copenhagen.

Malmo of Sweden will also be in the pot in today's draw which starts at 16:45 BST and will be covered here in Sportsday. They won 3-0 on the night to beat Red Bull Salzburg 4-2 on aggregate.

The defender who saves penalties

If you thought Arsenal's Champions League progress was nail-biting and dramatic at Emirates Stadium, what about this...

Bulgarian side Ludogorets won through via a penalty shootout, with defender Cosmin Moti going in goal to save two penalties after scoring one of his own.

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud will not play again this year after having surgery on a broken leg.

The club received the results of a second scan on Wednesday, which confirmed the France international had broken his left tibia.

The 27-year-old sustained the injury in Saturday's 2-2 draw at Everton and has been ruled out for up to four months.

"You'll ask who we'll buy to replace Giroud. At the moment, nobody," Gunners manager Arsene Wenger said.
