    Recalling that 3-3 draw in November 2002, the former Liverpool striker told 5 live Breakfast: "The funny thing is with teams such as Basel is that, I don't say you take them lightly, but when you do your preparation, you don't know as much about them as you possibly should. But we definitely knew about them afterwards.

    "We knew that our first-half display wasn't good enough. There was no finger pointing or anything like that, but you've got to understand that it's not good enough. You've got to go out there and perform.

    "It's not ideal being 3-0 down. What can a manager say? He can come out and give you a rollicking, but you've still got another half there to go out and perform, and another half to show what we're capable of doing."

    Liverpool are in Basel tonight and will be hoping for an improvement on their visit there in November 2002, when they were sent out of the competition. They went three goals down within 30 minutes but despite securing a 3-3 draw with goals from Danny Murphy, Vladimir Smicer and Michael Owen it was not enough.

    Champions League action starts this evening at 17:00 with Zenit St Petersburg hosting Monaco in Group C.

    Both sides won their opening games in the competition and Zenit, managed by former Spurs boss Andre Villas Boas, are unbeaten in 14 games in all competitions, winning 13.

    Monaco lost 1-0 at home to rivals Nice last weekend. Coach Leonardo Jardim has blamed referees for his team's inconsistent results this season and it is worth noting that tonight's game will be refereed by Mark Clattenburg.

    In the other game in the group, Bayer Leverkusen are up against Benfica.

    Ipswich manager Mick McCarthy told BBC Radio Suffolk he was not surprised to see Jonny Williams mark his return to the Championship club with a goal at Sheffield Wednesday last night.

    The Wales midfielder is back at Portman Road for a second loan spell from Crystal Palace and netted the equaliser in a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough.

    "I know every Ipswich fan around the world is delighted to see Jonny Williams is back," said McCarthy. "The stage was set for him to score the equaliser."

    Frankie Dettori will ride the 2013 Epsom Derby winner Ruler Of The World in Sunday's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp in Paris as he looks for a fourth win in the race.

    Before injury prevented him from taking the mount on eventual winner Treve last year, Dettori had an unbroken run of 25 rides in Flat racing's late-season pan-European championship.

    The Gunners face Galatasaray at the Emirates. The teams have met only once before competitively, the 2000 Uefa Cup final which Galatasaray won 4-1 on penalties after there were no goals after 120 minutes.
