    You know how it is being a free-scoring, mega-superstar striker at one of the world's biggest clubs....you break one goalscoring record on a Saturday and go and break another on the Tuesday.

    Lionel Messi became the Champions League's all-time top scorer with a hat-trick against Apoel Nicosia.

    Barcelona won 4-0 in Cyprus and Messi now has a total of 74 Champions League goals in 91 games.

    It beats the previous record by Real Madrid striker Raul of 71 goals from 142 games.

    No such late drama for Chelsea - who put their former manager Roberto Di Matteo to the sword - beating Schalke 5-0 in Gelsenkirchen.

    It means Jose Mourinho's men progress to the last 16 of the Champions League with a match to spare.

    Goals from John Terry, Willian, a Jan Kirchhoff own goal, Didier Drogba and Ramires stretched the Blues' unbeaten run to 16 matches.

    The man who has a habit of popping up with late goals did the business once again for Manchester City last night.

    Sergio Aguero's hat-trick saw City beat Bayern Munich 3-2 in their Champions League group match to keep their hopes of reaching the last 16 alive.

    Aguero scored twice in the last five minutes as City came from 2-1 behind against 10-man Bayern.

    Manuel Pellegrini's side will still need to win against Roma in a fortnight to have any chance of progressing.
