Get tougher on diving, says Bloomfield

Wycombe Wanderers midfielder Matt Bloomfield calls on the game's authorities to introduce retrospective bans for players found guilty of diving.

"If there is one thing footballers hate, it is missing games, so if there is the possibility of that, then I am sure it would help to eradicate the problem," says Bloomfield in his latest BBC Sport column.

The 30-year-old was booked for diving in a game five years ago, but insists he was fouled.

"With no option to appeal against the card, and without slow motion video evidence, I had to take it on the chin and move on," he adds.

Hartlepool announce takeover deal

Hartlepool United have been taken over by TMH 2014 Limited after chairman Ken Hodcroft and his Increased Oil Recovery firm sold their controlling stake.

"Peter Harris of TMH has taken over as chairman with Ken Hodcroft leaving the board and Russ Green retained as chief executive," a club statement read.

BBC Tees Sport had earlier learned boxing promoter Denis Hobson was set to be part of a takeover at Victoria Park, with former Rotherham boss Ronnie Moore close to becoming manager, but it has yet to be confirmed that he is part of the TMH deal.

Trophies stolen from the Red Bull Racing factory in Milton Keynes have been found in a lake in Sandhurst, Thames Valley Police have confirmed.

About 20 of the 60 awards, which were taken 10 days ago when six men used a 4x4 to drive through the building's entrance, have been recovered.

Many of the trophies are damaged.

Williams eyes 'electric' Aggborough

Worcester City's George Williams is excited by the prospect of extending his side's FA Cup run in front of their own fans at a sold-out Aggborough against Scunthorpe on Wednesday night.

City's FA Cup heroics, the first-round win at Coventry, followed by the second round 1-1 draw at Scunthorpe, have so far taken place on League One grounds.

But 21-year-old defender Williams told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "I've never seen Aggborough full. It should be absolutely electric.

"The fans have been great for us. Both at Coventry and at Scunthorpe. It was just like being at home they were so good. But having a full house will be a real boost."

Derby v Chelsea (19:45 GMT)

Who is a fan of cup shocks? Yep, me too. Well tonight we could see a couple in the League Cup.

While the history books paint a depressing picture for Derby - eight games without a win against Chelsea - the League Cup quarter-finals have been something of a recent stumbling block for the Blues.

Three of their last four quarter-finals have ended in defeat, including last season's 2-1 reverse at Sunderland.

The Premier League leaders versus the Championship high-fliers - should be a good one.

Wales announce World Cup preparations

Wales announce details of their warm-up games and other preparations for next year's World Cup.

Warren Gatland's men are set to play a double-header against Ireland, with the matches taking place at the Millennium Stadium on 8 August and Aviva Stadium on 29 August, before hosting Italy at the Cardiff venue on 5 September.

They will also undergo intensive training camps in Switzerland, Qatar and Poland ahead of the World Cup, which begins in mid-September.

Brooking backs England boys

Former England and West Ham midfielder Sir Trevor Brooking believes England can win the 2020 European Championship.

Brooking, who retired as the FA's head of football development this summer, says the fact that the semi-finals and final will be held at Wembley will give England an edge.

"For me 2020 is very realistic. I'm not saying a European Championship is easier, but we've got the semi-finals and the final and by then I think some good young players will have come through.

"The group coming through will give us the capability to win games and that paints a positive picture for the group stage and certainly when you get to a knockout stage."

Liverpool have agreed a £3m deal to sign Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa from Malaga in January, reports the Daily Express.

He was Gary Rowett's first signing as Birmingham boss and has played seven times for the St Andrew's side.

Vallverdu to coach Berdych

An interesting appointment in the world of tennis where Dani Vallverdu is to coach Tomas Berdych following his departure from Andy Murray's team.

The Venezuelan became friends with Murray during their time together at the Sanchez-Casal academy in Barcelona and had worked with the Scot for the past five years.

Murray announced last month that Vallverdu and fitness trainer Jez Green had left the team, describing the split as "mutual" in a short statement.

The former Arsenal man received 45.6% of the vote, followed by Alan Shearer with 30.2%. Didier Drogba got 8.7% of the vote, Ruud van Nistelrooy 5.6% and Wayne Rooney 3.8%.

Kevin Pietersen has been released by his IPL team, the Delhi Daredevils. Pietersen captained them this year as they finished bottom of the table, scoring just one 50 in 11 matches.

Pietersen will now go into the auction - Delhi could buy him back if they wanted.

De Gea's future is at Old Trafford

Manchester United are confident David De Gea's future is at Old Trafford.

The Spanish keeper's contract expires in 2016 and the 24-year-old is aware of reports of interest from Real Madrid.

United have not said if they have begun talks over an extension, although it would be normal practice as the deal is about to enter the final 18 months.

Director of Communications Adrian Bevington ‏on Twitter after it was announced he would leave the FA: "Emotional day after 17 years, but I'm ready for something new (whatever that will be). It's been an honour to work for The FA."

Luton return an option for McGeehan

Norwich midfielder Cameron McGeehan has said he would welcome the chance to return to Luton Town on loan.

The 19-year-old played 18 times to help John Still's Hatters win promotion from the Conference last season.

"I still talk to John every now and again and I could potentially go there on loan," the Canaries youngster told BBC Radio Norfolk. "But at the minute they're doing really well. If that comes to fruition it would be good."

Barcelona have said "Merci" to Thierry Henry today after he announced his retirement from the game.

The French striker won a host of titles with Barça, most notably the 2009 Champions League as well as two Spanish League titles, a Club World Cup, a Spanish Cup and both the Spanish and European Super Cups.

In all, he played 121 official games for the club, bagging 49 goals including two hat tricks (against Levante and Valencia) and scored twice in a 6-2 win at Real Madrid.

Adrian Bevington, the FA's director of communications and managing director of Club England, is to leave the organisation after 17 years.

Henry had not appeared in the World Cup final two years previous, but he made his mark at Euro 2000, scoring three goals and was named man of the match in the final. He did not score in Rotterdam, but hit the post early on and was a handful all night for the Italian back line. Were it not for the brilliance of Francesco Toldo, who kept Henry out numerous times, the match - which needed extra-time to find a winner - would have been over a lot sooner.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney tells the Manchester Evening News his club can still win the Premier League title.

"We have to believe we can win the title," he said. "It is still early days but we are getting better and better, the results are coming and there are a lot of games to go.

"Christmas is going to be a very important time for us. If we can keep picking up points and winning games, then hopefully the other teams will drop points and we can be right in there going into the second half of the season."

Bristol's Natalia joins Arsenal Ladies

Arsenal Ladies have signed Spain international Natalia Pablos Sanchon from Bristol Academy.

The 29-year-old forward, who played under Gunners boss Pedro Martinez Losa at Rayo Vallecano Femenino, scored nine goals in 19 appearances last season.

"Natalia is a player I know very well," Losa told the Arsenal website. "She was a natural goalscorer in Spain and she has proven she can score in England too. She has a great character and will add a lot to our team."

Natalia is the second player to move from the West Country to London this month, after defender Jemma Rose joined Arsenal last week.

Nottingham Forest receive transfer windfall

Nottingham Forest have won a £250,000 transfer fund to spend in the January window, despite being subject to a Football League embargo.

Forest supporter Shaun Lander earned his side the prize as Sky Bet's Transfer Fund competition came to an end on Tuesday lunchtime, just over 24 hours after the Football League put Forest, along with Championship rivals Blackburn and Leeds, under an embargo for breaching financial fair play rules.

Herrera responds to match-fixing probe

Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has responded to being among 41 people named in a match-fixing probe in Spain.

He said on Facebook: "In an on-going legal process involving Real Zaragoza (Spain), the club I was honoured to play from 12 until 22 years of age, there are 41 people cited as possible witnesses, of which I am one.

"I have never had and will never have anything to do with manipulating match results. If I am ever called to testify in any judicial hearing, I'll be happy to attend, as my conscience is totally clear.

"I love football and I believe in fair play, both on and off the pitch."

White boots in front

What has football become?

White boots are now by far the most common among top-flight footballers, with almost 48% of players favouring that colour in the last round of Premier League action, according to a survey by the Press Association (PA).

PA reporters were asked to make a note of the base colour of boots worn by all 220 players in Premier League starting line-ups. Our survey found 17 different varieties - in some cases there were two colours that had to be classed as the base.

Balotelli has scored two goals in 15 appearances for Liverpool this season

Liverpool boss Rodgers was also asked about striker Mario Balotelli, who has yet to score a league goal for them since joining in the summer and was criticised by former Reds midfielder Paul Ince this week.

"There are lots of opinions about Liverpool and Paul is someone who I respect and was a wonderful player and has managed so he knows the pressures of management," said Rodgers.

"Mario is here as a Liverpool player and as the coach and manager I need to work to maximise what I can get out of the players, but that is the same with every single player. While he is here at the club that is all I will concentrate on."

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has just been talking at a club press conference ahead of their Capital One Cup game with Championship leaders Bournemouth on Wednesday. No surprises that a few of the questions were about his own position, which has come under severe scrutiny following the Reds' poor start to the season. Here is what he had to say...

"As a manager you will always have tough periods but I have great confidence in how staff and players work. We just need a little bit of luck and a break and I think we will get that. When we get some consistent results we can push on. When you are manager at Liverpool, one of the great clubs of the world, there is always going to be pressure. Expectancy on us this year is based on how we worked last season.

"We recognise the challenges of this season. We know what we had last season and this year that dynamic has totally changed. We know the challenges and the pressures that are on you could be unrivalled but we are relaxed and focused and even more driven to restore confidence to the team. We are looking to fight to improve that."

Reading set to appoint Clarke

Championship side Reading are set to appoint former West Brom head coach Steve Clarke as their new manager, BBC Sport understands.

Clarke, 51, will replace Nigel Adkins, who was sacked on Monday following Saturday's 6-1 defeat by Birmingham.

The ex-Chelsea assistant boss has been out of work since being sacked by West Brom 12 months ago.

Reading, who have lost nine of their last 15 matches in all competitions, are 16th in the Championship table.

Tigers trio sign new contracts

England duo Dan Cole and Tom Youngs have joined fellow international front-row forward Marcos Ayerza in agreeing new contracts with Leicester Tigers.

The Premiership club have not revealed the length of the deals for prop Cole and hooker Youngs, both 27, or Argentine prop Ayerza, 31, but describe them as "long-term".

Director of rugby Richard Cockerill said: "It is great news. They are genuine world-class players in key positions and are important parts of the senior core to the squad."

Johnson apologises to Oldham fans

Oldham Athletic manager Lee Johnson has apologised to supporters after his side's 4-0 loss at home to Yeovil Town.

The Latics sat in the play-off places going into the game having lost just once in 15 League One matches.

It was Oldham's heaviest home defeat since February 2011, when Peterborough beat them 5-0, and was also Johnson's first loss to father Gary - after beating him in their first encounter.

BBC Sport's Nabil Hassan: "Steve Clarke remains the bookmakers' favourite to replace Nigel Adkins at Reading. Meanwhile club captain Jem Karacan tweeted on behalf of the Reading squad last night, following his departure.

He said: "On behalf of the players, I want to thank the gaffer, Cros and Deano for everything they did here. They couldn't have worked any harder and earned massive respect from everyone here.

"Now, we as players, have to take responsibility to go out there and perform - starting on Saturday."

Uefa open disciplinary case against Celtic

Uefa has opened a disciplinary case against Celtic after crowd disorder at a Europa League match in Croatia.

Celtic fans set off fireworks and clashed with riot police during a 4-3 loss at Dinamo Zagreb last Thursday.

Uefa says its disciplinary panel will judge the case on 19 February. On the same day, Celtic hosts Inter Milan in the first leg of a last-32 tie.

Meet the Championship's Diego Costa

Chris Martin is revelling in the responsibility of being the Championship's Diego Costa.

Both are spearheading their respective team's magnificent start to the season as a lone striker in a tried-and-trusted 4-3-3 system, both are in superb goalscoring form, both are 26 years old, and both are yet to convince at international level.

And they could face each other tonight in the League Cup quarter-final at the iPro Stadium.

French national newspaper L'Equipe is running a poll to determine where Henry should be ranked in their list of the nation's greatest ever players.

After just over 30,000 votes, 23% think he is third while one in five people have placed him fifth.

Only four per cent of voters believe he is outside the top 15.

Henry was ranked 15th in an identical poll conducted by bi-weekly magazine France Football in 2004.

Former Manchester United defender Phil Neville has been talking about Rio Ferdinand's fortunes at QPR on BBC Radio 5 live:

"I'm sure he has that every morning he wakes up. He'll go to training and think 'Shall I call it a day? Is this it? Is this how you feel when you come to the end of your career'. I knew it, I played a game here against Wigan and straight after the game I said to my wife, 'that's it, I'm not playing another game of football.'

"Maybe Rio is starting to come to that time when he has to make a big decision. I think he is frustrated. It got off to a bad start. He went into a team that was probably disorganised.

"He's not found himself back in the team since his ban. But I think with Rio, and you speak to the QPR people, he's been fantastic around the place with his professionalism, and he will get his opportunity over Christmas, I'm sure."

Some stats on Thierry Henry's Premier League career compared to some of the other top strikers in the league.

Henry's 121.79 minutes per goal is better than Andy Cole, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Alan Shearer. He also provided the most assists out of that list, with 74.

Pietersen dropped by Daredevils

Kevin Pietersen has been dropped by his IPL team the Delhi Daredevils, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Pietersen, whose contract was worth around £800,000, is reported to be one of four players leaving the IPL franchise in a clear out following their poor season last year.

He would be able to enter the IPL auction early next year in a bid to find a new club but is unlikely to attract such a high deal.

Jefferies leaves Dunfermline

It seems as though this is the day to leave your job if you are a manager in Scotland.

Jim Jefferies is the latest casualty after resigning as manager of Scottish League One side Dunfermline Athletic.

His contract, and that of assistant Neil McCann, was due to expire at the end of the season but Jefferies has opted to leave the Fife club now.

The former Hearts boss has been in charge at East End Park since March 2012, during which time the club entered and exited administration.

Howe urges Cherries to show quality

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe believes Wednesday's League Cup quarter-final against Liverpool gives his players a perfect chance to showcase their skills.

The Cherries lead the Championship, are unbeaten in 12 games and knocked out West Brom in the previous round to reach the last eight for the first time.

"I think it is a showcase for the club and a showcase for the team," Howe told BBC Radio Solent. "The result is always in the lap of the gods, but we want to see the principles of our play coming out."

Reaction to Nigel Adkins' sacking

There has been plenty of reaction to Reading's sacking of manager Nigel Adkins.

Former Reading player Lawrie Sanchez told BBC Radio Berkshire: "It's always disappointed when someone gets the sack. I heard someone say Nigel Adkins had no substance. That's ridiculous, he was a good manager.

"Before he came to Reading he got promoted four times in five seasons and took Southampton to the Premier League. When he came to the club there was a new owner flexing his muscles, he was promised money to turn it around but all of a sudden the bottom fell out and he had to sell his top earner."

Who next: "You need to have your next move in place and I would assume they would move for Eamonn Dolan. The team is the best of the academy, it would be the natural move. It's a big step up, he will know the players."

No Toon future for Ben Arfa

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew tells the Newcastle Chronicle Hatem Ben Arfa still has no future at Newcastle United - despite his loan deal being terminated at Hull City.

The Frenchman is back in Paris after the move to the KC Stadium did not work out. Ben Arfa played eight times for the Tigers but did not impress.

When asked about his future, Pardew said: "He won't be coming back here, that's all I can say."

McGlynn leaves Livingston

John McGlynn has left his manager's position at Scottish Championship club Livingston by mutual consent.

The former Raith Rovers and Hearts boss took charge of the West Lothian outfit in September last year, becoming their fifth manager since Gary Bollan was sacked in February 2012.

Player-coach Mark Burchill has been appointed caretaker manager until a new manager is appointed. Livingston are four points adrift at the bottom of the table.

Sacking Rodgers would be "madness"

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp tells the Liverpool Echo it would be "madness" to sack Brendan Rodgers.

The Reds are out of the Champions League and in the bottom half of the Premier League table ahead of Wednesday night's Capital One Cup quarter-final trip to Championship leaders Bournemouth.

"A few months ago Brendan was manager of the year and now look at the pressure he is under," Redknapp said. "I don't think they should change him. That would be madness. I like Brendan, I think he is good. But he has made mistakes this season and he is suffering for them."

Rory McIlroy is named the 2014 Race to Dubai European Tour Golfer of the Year after a stunning season on both sides of the Atlantic.

The Northern Irishman won the Race to Dubai and topped the PGA Tour money list, as well as winning the Open Championship and US PGA Championship as he reclaimed the world number one spot.

The 25-year-old also won the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, and adds the honour to the Golf Writers Trophy he was awarded last week.

What a career.

Thierry Henry, who also played for Juventus, Barcelona and Monaco, scored 175 Premier League goals and is fourth on the list of all-time scorers.

He won two Premier League titles and three FA Cups with the Gunners, where he played between 1999 and 2007.

He added the Champions League trophy with Barcelona in 2009 and returned to Arsenal for four matches on loan from the Red Bulls in 2012, coming on as a substitute to score the winner against Leeds in the third round of the FA Cup.

Former Stoke midfielder, Rory Delap - now a coach with Derby - was part of the Ireland squad that was denied a place in the 2010 World Cup by the Thierry Henry "Le Hand of God" play-off goal. Here is on BBC Radio 5 live discussing the recently-retired striker and that goal...

"There are a few greats who spoil that with what they do. I'm sure he regrets that. There is still a lot of feeling back home. The fact that people stopped buying Henry hoovers shows how far it went and how horrible a thing it was to happen to the country. You don't mind getting beat by greatness - and that is what he had - but it is disappoiting that people remember that over all the great things he did. But that will in the top players is to win at all costs and sometimes you have to take the bad with the good."

Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has been speaking to the media ahead of Wednesday's League Cup quarter-final tie with Tottenham.

He said: "We have a really big week in front of us in terms of two really big games. We will be trying to win them both.

"We are looking forward to Wednesday night and are excited about this game. It should be a cracking match.

"We've played really well in the cup and it's proved a turnaround to our season. Some players have made a name for themselves."
