    In Australia, Andy Murray has continued his good start to the year. Fresh from winning the World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, the Scot has eased to victory in his opening match in the Hopman Cup in Perth.

    He beat France's Benoit Paire 6-2 7-5 in Men's Singles Group B.

    Murray is teaming up with Heather Watson in the international team tournament - Watson will play Alize Cornet next.

    A bit of breaking cycling news to bring you...Sir Bradley Wiggins has extended his contract with Team Sky.

    The new deal runs until April this year and will see him race Paris-Roubaix 2015. Wiggins will then switch to the track to focus on preparing for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.

    Wiggins said: "Everyone knows what this team means to me. I've had some amazing experiences and I hope there are a few more to come."

    Kevin Pietersen has been in action in the Australian Big Bash league this morning. The former England batsman has just been dismissed after hitting a rapid 54 for Melbourne Stars against the Sydney Sixers., external

    Earlier, another discarded England batsman, Michael Lumb, cracked 80 off 61 balls for the Sixers. Who says English players can't play limited-overs cricket?

    Melbourne, chasing 151 for victory, need 35 runs off the last three overs.

    Let's bring you some of this morning's hottest gossip. The Mirror is reporting that Liverpool have begun talks, external over three January moves this weekend.

    Brendan Rodgers is apparently keen to recall Belgian striker Divock Origi from his loan at Lille early - the paper suggests that a deal has been struck, as long as Lille can sign a replacement.

    The Reds are also said to be chasing Bayern Munich midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri and Fiorentina goalkeeper Neto, in order to provide competition for Simon Mignolet.

    There has been no play before lunch because of rain on day four of the third and final Test between South Africa and West Indies in Cape Town. The Windies, who trail 1-0 in the series, are still four runs behind with eight second innings wickets remaining.

    A very interesting rugby union line from The Times this morning. They're reporting that England coach Stuart Lancaster is considering bringing Toulon back-rower Steffon Armitage, external in from the international wilderness. (You'll need a subscription to read the whole story.)

    Armitage has not featured for England under Lancaster, despite being voted European player of the year, because of the Rugby Football Union's directive that players based outside England are not eligible for the national team.

    However, the paper's Alex Lowe reports that Armitage "is being viewed as a potential England No 8 for the World Cup", with the management taking the view that a home World Cup constitutes 'exceptional circumstances'.

    The sponsors of Oldham Athletic's main stand, Verlin Rainwater Solutions, say they would end their association with the club if it goes ahead with the signing of convicted rapist Ched Evans. Craig Verling, a director of the company, says he'll "pull the plug" if Evans becomes an Oldham player.

    L'Equipe are suggesting that even Lionel Messi could be on the move,, external reporting that Paris Saint-Germain have not given up the idea of recruiting the Barcelona star and could be willing to pay a record sum of £164m for his services.

    Spanish daily AS reports that Chelsea and Manchester United are keeping a close eye on Real Madrid's 21-year-old defender Raphael Varane and could offer up to £18m, external for the French international.

    And in Germany, Bild are reporting that Manchester City are eager to sign Schalke's Julian Draxler, external and could be willing to trade defender Matija Nastasic for the 21-year-old midfielder.

    Across the pond, the NFL playoffs are in full swing, so in case you missed any of yesterday's action, here's what happened.

    Tony Romo threw the game-winning touchdown as Dallas Cowboys came from behind to eliminate Detroit Lions with a 24-20 win. They'll take on Green Bay Packers in the NFC divisional play-offs next.

    Meanwhile, Indianapolis Colts comfortably defeated Cincinnati Bengals 26-10 to set up a meeting with last year's Superbowl runners-up Denver Broncos, and Baltimore Ravens, the champions of 2013, also advanced with a 30-17 win over Pittsburgh Steelers. They'll take on New England Patriots next.

    The England Lions, captained by Jonathan Trott, are in action on their tour of South Africa, in a three-day tour match against a Gauteng Invitation XI in Soweto, which is a warm-up for two unofficial Tests and two unofficial one-day internationals against South Africa A.

    The Lions are 70-0 after 20 overs, with Sam Robson on 41 and Adam Lyth 27.

    While Manchester City were party-pooping Sheffield United, across the Channel, fourth-tier Grenoble pulled off a mighty cupset, knocking Ligue 1 leaders Marseille out of the French Cup.

    Not only that, they came from behind three times to do it, including scoring an equaliser in the dying seconds of extra-time, before prevailing 5-4 on penalties. No wonder L'Equipe calls it 'A monumental achievement'.
