    Labour leader Ed Miliband has given his thoughts on Ched Evans to BBC Radio Manchester and he says: "What I think about that situation is that Ched Evans is in a sport where you are a role model and I think that it's right Oldham are thinking again.

    "I think that it's right Oldham are thinking again about whether Ched Evans should be hired by them because you are a role model, he's been convicted of a very serious crime.

    "Personally, if I was in their shoes, he hasn't shown remorse and I wouldn't take him on."

    World number one Serena Williams credited an on-court coffee for her recovery after she stormed back from a poor first set to beat Italy's Flavia Pennetta 0-6 6-3 6-0 in her opening match of the year at the Hopman Cup, the round robin mixed team event in Perth.

    "I'm so jet lagged and Flavia played really, really well and yeah, everyone needs coffee every now and then. I needed coffee to get my feet moving," said the 33-year-old, who lost the first set in 19 minutes. "I am a coffee drinker. I didn't have mine this morning and I was just feeling it, so I just had to get some coffee into me."

    Serena then teamed up with John Isner to beat Pennetta and Fabio Fognini 6-2 2-6 11-9.

    Let's move away from football for a nano-second to congratulate a new world champion. Gary Anderson beat 16-time champion Phil Taylor 7-6 at the Alexandra Palace last night.

    Taylor fought back from 6-4 down to force a deciding set but Anderson, who earlier saw a third dart knock two previous throws from the treble 20 bed to leave all three on the ground, took it 3-0.
