Toffees boss Roberto Martinez does not believe England midfielder Ross Barkley needs the experience of playing in the European Under-21s Championship finals this summer.

The 21-year-old was part of Roy Hodgson's squad at the 2014 World Cup, making three appearances in Brazil.

"We will speak with the FA. Ross Barkley has been involved in the best possible tournament with a senior side so I don't think the other tournaments can be a positive, not just for him but the rest of the squad," says the Spaniard.

"Those experiences at Under-21 level are to prepare you for the senior level. Once you get there I think you are blocking someone else's path."

Everton boss Roberto Martinez gives the latest team news ahead of Monday's Premier League home game against West Brom:

"Apart from Aiden McGeady who is suspended for his sending off, it will be the same squad we had against West Ham.

"Tony Hibbert is the closest to coming back but we need to be careful to not push him too early, James McCarthy the same. Sylvain Distin should be training with the group tomorrow and we will assess him before the game so maybe he and Tony Hibbert have some chance."

On whether his team can put pressure on title rivals Manchester City, who play Arsenal on Sunday, by winning the day before: "I don't think that the big boys feel too much under pressure. We are both big boys and I don't think that the result of the other team affects either side.

"We both know we have a job to do and have to win matches. If we win tomorrow I don't think that will affect Manchester City."

On John Terry being set to pass Frank Lampard's record of appearances for Chelsea: "Chelsea is the only club of his career. He has had a couple of surgeries which meant he missed games. Frank Lampard started his career with West Ham and is now having games with Manchester City so I think it is normal."

  5. Everton news conferencepublished at 12:24 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2015

Everton boss Roberto Martinez, whose team host West Brom on Monday, on transfer activity:

On Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o, who has been linked to Sampdoria: "After the West Ham game we had a couple of enquiries but nothing concrete. With Samuel we will take another couple of weeks to decide the next step. I'd not rule anything out, it could be that he stays with us. We will see what is best for him and the club."

On a signing a goalkeeper with Tim Howard injured: "We are looking for the long term addition. I thought Joel had a very good performance in the cup and we probably need an extra bit of cover in that department. If that can be done in January but I'm not bringing someone in for the sake of it."

Is there any truth in speculation about Sheffield Wednesday keeper Keiren Westwood: "No, not at all."

  6. Chelsea news conferencepublished at 12:21 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2015

What is his verdict on Manchester City signing Swansea's Wilfried Bony?

"Well done. He is a good player and a good striker.

"If they have the money and can spend the money and have no problems with Financial Fair Play, well done.

"They can only play with 11 though, unless the rules are different and they can play with 12. The rules are different for them in some areas, but not this one.

"If Bony plays and Dzeko is on the bench then I am happy with that. But to have Aguero, Jovetic, Bony and Dzeko is magnificent.

Asked what he meant by the different rules that apply to Manchester City: "You know what I mean."

  7. Chelsea news conferencepublished at 12:20 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2015

  8. Chelsea news conferencepublished at 12:18 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2015

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho on whether goalkeeper Petr Cech's performance against Newcastle has given him a tough decision when Thibaut Courtois returns to full fitness.

"I repeat, I have the two best goalkeepers in the Premier League. I can decide with the keepers in the same way as I decide with the other players. My decision against Newcastle was a simple decision because a 100% fit Petr Cech is better than an 85% fit Thibaut Courtois."

  9. Chelsea news conferencepublished at 12:18 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2015

Jose Mourinho on the "campaign" he believes his side are up against:

"You could say that Eden Hazard is fouled more than any player in the Premier League. You can also say that we have the most shots and dominance, but still have the least penalties. You can say there is a discrepancy in that.

"Eden Hazard is still the same naive boy who was playing at youth level and for him to go to the floor needs to be something really nasty. He is getting no protection that is the reality."

On his injury news ahead of his side' match against Swansea: "Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois should be fit tomorrow, he might not be 100% but how many players are through the season?

"Cesar Azpilicueta is less bad than we thought and he was intelligent to stop when he felt that the big injury was coming. He will train with the team next week I think."

  10. Chelsea news conferencepublished at 12:14 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2015

Jose Mourinho on January transfers: "I'm happy with the squad, it is not a big group but a good group. I'll be happy if nobody leaves or nobody comes.

Does he need defensive recruits after conceding five goals against Tottenham? "No. I have the two best goalkeepers in the premier league, I have fantastic defenders. The team defends very well. We conceded five in one game and that is better than conceding one each in five matches and losing five matches."

  11. Chelsea news conferencepublished at 12:09 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2015

Blues boss Jose Mourinho is asked about the accuracy of a newspaper story that suggested he told Premier League official Phil Dowd that he was "too fat" to referee after the defeat at Spurs.

"I go to the referee's dressing room before and after the game. Before I went with both captains and the manager of the opposite team. What we speak there is between us and stays there.

"After the match you can go and sometimes the words are the normal ones - good luck for the next game, have a good rest, etc.

"Other times, like men and normal people, we discuss what happened in the game. With Phil he made a big mistake and he was not happy about the mistake."

So that, er, clears that one up.....

  12. Chelsea news conferencepublished at 12:05 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2015

"Now I am in conditions to control myself and a week ago I couldn't control my words so to avoid bigger problems I stayed away.

"I am not interested in the FA misconduct charge, I just ignore it and get on with my job.

"We are not against the referees, their job is not easy. I'm happy to admit my mistakes, so when I spoke with Kevin Friend and, realised it was my mistake and not his, I apologised.

"The reality is that every decision is going against us and the results are affected by that. But I want to put any doubts about the honesty of people beyond us totally."

  13. Chelsea news conferencepublished at 12:01 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2015

ESPN football writer Miguel Delaney on Twitter: "Mourinho out for his press conference. 'Don't tell me you miss me man, just a week... Steve Holland speaks better English. Now, I'm in a position to control myself. Last week I wasn't. Didn't want more trouble.'"

BBC Sport's Simon Stone at Carrington: "If Radamel Falcao was hoping for some comfort from Louis van Gaal from that press conference, he didn't get it.

"He may have merit a private plane bringing him into Manchester on deadline day. He may be on an enormous salary of around £1million a month.

"He may have received rapturous applause from United's fans when he made his debut against this weekend's opponents QPR.

"He may be one of the biggest names in the game.

"But in stating he doesn't care about the price, players have to prove themselves, Van Gaal would appear to infer the Colombian has not done it.

"He was not even on the bench against Southampton last Sunday remember."

  16. Manchester United news conferencepublished at 11:46 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2015

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal admits Queens Park Rangers's "long-ball" style has the ability to cause problems for his team this weekend.

Fourth-placed United travel to Loftus Road on Saturday to face the hosts, who are scrapping for Premier League survival.

"I think the players will do everything to beat Manchester United. I think it is always the same, because Manchester United is a big club," says the Dutchman.

"Every player and every team want to beat Manchester United. QPR have a playing style that is difficult for us, we have seen that already. They play a lot of long balls, they have strong strikers and we have to beat them in spite of that."

  18. 'Super League more attractive than NRL'published at 11:40 Greenwich Mean Time 16 January 2015

Super League can be more attractive than the Australian NRL and the new World Club Series will provide an opportunity to prove it, believes Warrington coach Tony Smith.

The annual World Club Challenge is being expanded from a one-off clash into a series, which takes place next month, featuring the top three Super League teams against some of the cream of the NRL.

Australian Smith, whose team are one of the sides taking part, says: "I don't think we get enough credit for the quality of play that we do have in this country and this is a chance to prove something to the Australian community and public.

"Until you come over here and experience it, you don't realise how tough and exciting a competition it is. There's a contrasting style and I'd like to argue that at times some of ours is more exciting and attractive to watch."
