    Newcastle United confirm in an official statement, external that John Carver will take the role of head coach until the end of the season.

    Carver, 50, said: "I am confident that we can deliver exciting successful football and look forward with relish to my role as head coach of this great football club."

    Bury manager David Flitcroft says the reason for the poor playing surface at the JD Stadium is that the pitch has "failed".

    The Shakers spent a reported £150,000 on relaying the surface last summer but it has badly cut up in recent weeks.

    "It's deteriorated, failed, collapsed - whatever you want to say, and results haven't been right," Flitcroft told BBC Radio Manchester following Saturday's home win over Carlisle. "I'm as guilty as anyone to try and play the beautiful game on that."

    London Irish's recruitment for next season has continued with the signing of Brendan McKibbin from the Sydney-based Waratahs.

    The 29-year-old scrum-half has made 59 appearances for the Super Rugby champions, coming on as a replacement in last year's final.

    "Brendan is a top-class player and a real leader on and off the field," said London Irish director Bob Casey.

    BBC Sport's Simon Stone has spoken to Manchester United striker Robin van Persie, who says it is "vital" the club win the FA Cup this season.

    Van Persie, a late substitute in the goalless fourth round draw at Cambridge on Friday, said the mood at Old Trafford lifted when Chelsea and Manchester City were knocked out on Saturday.

    Northampton and England hooker Dylan Hartley has admitted his frustration after being sin-binned despite trying hard to avoid controversy in the weekend game against Racing Metro.

    The 28-year-old, who returned from a three-week ban for elbowing last week, was shown a yellow card for tackling on the ground. "I thought I did everything I could going into this game. I knew the spotlight would be on me," he told BBC Radio Northampton.

    "I just saw a player run over me, I put my hands up and I tackled him. The next thing I know, I'm in the sin-bin."

    Wigan Athletic have signed Aston Villa midfielder Chris Herd on loan until the end of the season.

    The 25-year-old Australia international played three games while on loan at Bolton earlier this campaign but has not featured for Villa since December 2013.

    "He's a player I've looked at a lot over a period of time," said Wigan boss Malky Mackay.

    The remaining FA fourth round tie takes place at Spotland tonight as Rochdale take on Stoke, the first time the teams have met in the famous old competition.

    There have been nine meetings between them in total, Stoke winning five, losing two and drawing two, but on their most recent visit in 2007 the Potters were defeated on penalties after the League Cup game finished 2-2 after extra time.
