    Football

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has praised new signing Jermain Defoe.

The 32-year-old England striker has scored once and the Black Cats have only lost once in four games since he joined them in January.

    Jermain Defoe

"He's a wake-up call, we can call it," said Poyet. "It's no coincidence that we are winning with him in the side."

"I know strikers are always about goals, but the way he moves, the options he gives us when he makes runs, how good he is on the ball - he gives the opportunity to others to take advantage of that as well."

Rangers chief executive Derek Llambias has now issued a statement saying: "The basis of any loan deal is that the players who arrive bolster the side and give the squad more depth. That's exactly what is happening here. There's no way the board is picking the team."

Midfielders Gael Bigirimana and Haris Vuckic and defenders Kevin Mbabu, Remie Streete and Shane Ferguson joined from the English Premier League side on Monday.

Governing body UEFA published City's revised squad for the second half of the season on Thursday and Jovetic's name was not included.

  42. Kilmarnock boss to quit

    Football

Kilmarnock manager Allan Johnston has made a surprise announcement that he will leave his post in the summer.

The 41-year-old "just made my mind up before I came in" to a press conference ahead of Saturday's game with Hamilton. He said the sale of Robbie Muirhead to Dundee United for £150,000 on Monday was a factor behind his decision.

  43. Paul Lambert news conference

Aston Villa v Chelsea (Saturday, 15:00 GMT)

"I don't want to talk about other clubs' players, but I tried to bring in one or two players," says Paul Lambert. "But until someone walks in your door, you're never sure it will happen. We have to get that last third of the game right, as that's where you win games. It's an area in the pitch we have to improve."

  44. Southampton news conference

QPR v Southampton (Saturday, 15:00 GMT)

'With 15 games to go, where do you hope to end up in the table?' is the final question to Ronald Koeman.

"If keep all fit that is a key question then we can fight for first six or seven placings and qualify for Europe," the Saints boss said.

"We have had problems the last few weeks, not in results, but because e don't have the number of players. The last two weeks we've had a bench of only under 21 players.

"Still, we are fourth. It is amazing what we are doing. But it is difficult to keep that up. Fitness or players is more important than the position in the table."

And with that, he's off. One press conference to go, over at Aston Villa - and there's news from that coming right up...

  45. Southampton news conference

QPR v Southampton (Saturday, 15:00 GMT)

    Harry Redknapp

Asked if he was surprised to see Harry Redknapp leave QPR, Ronald Koeman replied: "I was surprised. It is strange they have good results at home but 11 defeats in a row away. I like Harry and he's an experienced coach, but that is QPR's problem.

"The most difficult time is to know the right moment to go. If you still have feeling and spirit with players you can continue, if not it is difficult for the coach."

  46. Southampton news conference

QPR v Southampton (Saturday, 15:00 GMT)

Ronald Koeman is in his usual good form and gives a good response to a question about Tottenham boss Maurico Pochettino's comments on a Spanish radio station that the reason Southampton are doing well is because he left a good team when he departed the south coast club in the summer.

    Spurs

"Thanks to Mauirico I've got an easy job. It was the reason I came here to have a little holiday," said Koeman, before adding - just so everyone was sure: "I'm joking now."

Koeman went on to say: "It is feeling more like my side now because we had to make a lot of changes in the team. The way the club is doing, the structure and organisation makes it easier for the manager."

  47. Yorkshire's grand aim

    Road cycling

Yorkshire hopes to capitalise on its success as Tour de France hosts by staging the UCI Road World Championships.

QPR v Southampton (Saturday, 15:00 GMT)

On the Saints transfer window dealings, Ronald Koeman said: "I was very pleased because I said after last week's game that we expect one player to come in and finally we got Filip Djuricic (pictured) on loan to the end of the season.

    Saints

"We also kept everybody at the club. There were a lot of rumours that maybe some players would leave.

"I'm happy with the squad. Nobody was close to going. There were no serious offers. That said I was not afraid to lose one or two in the transfer window.

  49. Alan Pardew news conference

Leicester v Crystal Palace (Saturday, 15:00 GMT)

Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew has been giving his thoughts on the January transfer window. He says: "It helps people in the game that probably do not need helping - football agents in particular. It lands them in great, powerful positions with the players and leaves us financially stuck at times.

"Maybe there is a system out there that is better, but we still have to have some kind of window. Some teams lose players through injury and there needs to be a period where teams can turn their seasons around with two or three signings."

  50. Southampton news conference

QPR v Southampton (Saturday, 15:00 GMT)

Down to the south coast... and Ronald Koeman starts with some team news.

  51. Leicester news conference

Leicester v Crystal Palace (Saturday, 15:00 GMT)

Nigel Pearson acknowledges that the Foxes have to start picking up more points at home if they are to move off the bottom of the table.

"Our home form has to improve, no doubt about it," he says. "It has probably gone unnoticed because we've generally played well but we are confident we can change it.

"Crystal Palace are a good side. Alan Pardew has had a positive return and they have some great attacking options. They are very capable.

"Where we are in May is most important, but progress in the table would be nice and it is an incentive to know three points can get us out (of the relegation zone altogether)."

  52. Formula 1

BBC Oxford Sport: The adminstrators of Caterham F1 say auctions of their remaining assets, including the 2014 car, have been scheduled but insist the team remains for sale. Administrators say the asset auctions would be called off if a late sale of the team can be made. The auctions are scheduled for March and April.

"At whatever point I leave here hopefully I'll be leaving something people can be proud of.

"Daniel, like every player, wants to play," he said. "He is coming along very well. We'll analyse whether he starts over the next couple of days."

  55. Leicester news conference

Leicester v Crystal Palace (Saturday, 15:00 GMT)

Over to Leicester where Nigel Pearson is speaking.

First up the issue of the club's business during the transfer window.

    Nigel Pearson

"We did business early and late targets were unavailable. I didn't want to add for the sake of adding," he said.

"I am pleased to add the experience of Schwarzer and Huth. Hopefully [striker and club record signing] Andrej Kramaric can fulfil his potential too. Huth has a lot of know-how."

  56. Gus Poyet news conference

Swansea v Sunderland (Saturday, 15:00 GMT)

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet has been telling the media about his side's team news before their game at Swansea on Saturday. Poyet says: "It will be touch and go for Adam Johnson so it is a big decision tomorrow, but we have got a few of them.

"I think one of them [Jack Rodwell or Connor Wickham] has a chance but the other one doesn't, but we will wait until Friday. It will depend on the other players as well because if Emanuele Giaccherini is all rright then we won't take a risk with one of them."

  57. Liverpool news conference

    (Saturday, 17:30 GMT)

    Steven Gerrard

Saturday will, unless we are all in for a very big surprise, be Steven Gerrard's last Merseyside derby.

Asked if Everton fans would be glad to see the back of the Liverpool skipper, Brendan Rodgers replied: "I'm sure they will. He has been incredible for the club and been outstanding in so many derby games. He'll want to win, like he does every time.

"How will he deal with the emotion of it being his last? Like he has all the others - by being focused on the team getting a result."

Speaking about the Everton game in general, Rodgers added: "Derby games are very exciting. They are wonderful games to be involved in, full of emotion and they go so fast. The quality of the football is outstanding, which is especially impressive as the players are under intense pressure."

  58. Alan Pardew news conference

Leicester v Crystal Palace (Saturday, 15:00 GMT)

Talking about Saturday's game at Leicester, Crystal Palace manager Alan Pardew says: "They're a tough team and have done some business in January. It's a game where we can put a great distance between us and them but they can bring us in really close if they win so it's a crucial game.

"Our team is experienced and has got good ability and could potentially finish mid-table. But we all know we have a big battle on our hands. Every game is competitive and we have to make sure we stay up."

  59. Liverpool news conference

Everton v Liverpool (Saturday, 17:30 GMT)

Brendan Rodgers is brimming with positivity today, saying "anything is possible" this season.

"We are in a European competition and in the FA Cup we can get to final ... and we can challenge not just for fourth place but beyond that. Those are the objectives of the forthcoming months," said the Liverpool boss.

Asked about the pressure he was under earlier in the season, when results weren't as good, Rodgers said: "When you're at one of biggest clubs in world and you're not performing, like we were at the start of season, you are going to come under the spotlight and I accept and expect that. But we are playing very well at the moment."

A brutal striker of the ball, McCullum is one of only two wicketkeepers to score more than 4,000 ODI runs with a strike-rate above 90. Cricket

It is time for the next profile of competitors aiming to pick up the wicketkeeping slot in our all-time one-day international team. This time we look at Andy Flower of Zimbabwe.

    Andy Flower

Undoubtedly the finest cricketer that Zimbabwe has ever produced, Flower's achievements on the field are often overshadowed by his 'death of democracy' protest at the 2003 World Cup and his time as coach of England.

    Mahendra Singh Dhoni

An ice-cool temperament has left Dhoni with a habit of taking India to victory from seemingly difficult positions, while a batting average of 52.51 is more than 12 runs better than any other man to claim more than 200 wicketkeeping victims.

Tim Collingwood: Surely many loaned players have similar clauses in their contracts. It's probably just a case of Rangers being open about it.

  122. Al Hasawi hints at Forest departure

    Football

Nottingham Forest owner and chairman Fawaz Al Hasawi has seemingly put his future at the club in doubt.

Al Hasawi, who sacked manager Stuart Pearce on Sunday and has been heavily criticised for the way the club have handled their finances, was answering questions from fans on Twitter.

And when asked if he would ever step down as chairman and just be the owner, he said: "I will soon from everything".

Al Hasawi, who took over in July 2012, later deleted the message.

  123. Thursday's back pages

    The Sun

You've got to hand it to The Sun, 'Bold as a Cout' is a pretty good headline. Away from Liverpool's FA Cup win, the main story is about Arsenal's Jack Wilshere, who has, apparently, been spotted holding a shisha pipe at a nightclub.

  124. Everton to unveil Hillsborough plaque

    Football

Everton have announced that the 96 who died at Hillsborough are to have a plaque unveiled in their memory at Goodison Park, ahead of Saturday's 224th Merseyside derby against Liverpool.

The permanent tribute had been suggested to the club by supporters and Everton fan Stephen Kelly, whose brother Michael died in the tragedy in April 1989.

  125. Westwood sets the pace

    Golf

Defending champion Lee Westwood and major winner Graeme McDowell shared the clubhouse lead in Thursday's opening round of the Malaysian Open.

    Lee Westwood

Westwood, who romped to a seven-shot victory last year, had seven birdies and one bogey to record a six-under-par round of 66. Former U.S. Open champion McDowell also carded seven birdies.

Among other early finishers, England's Tommy Fleetwood was third after a 67, two strokes ahead of European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley.

Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez, who won the season-opening event on the Champions Tour in Hawaii late last month, opened with a 72.

  126. Post update

BBC Somerset: Gary Johnson says he is very disappointed to be sacked by Yeovil Town at this stage of the season. Johnson: "We brought four players in during the transfer window and haven't been given time to show what we can do with them."

  130. Carlisle reveals suicide bid

    Football

Former Burnley defender Clarke Carlisle has revealed that when he was hit by a lorry in December, he was attempting to take his own life.

    Clarke Carlisle

In an interview with the Sun newspaper, Carlisle said he had been left severely depressed by the end of his football career, financial problems and the loss of a television punditry role.

The 35-year-old left hospital on 30 January, six weeks after being struck in North Yorkshire.

"This was my lowest point," he said.

  131. Clarke on the comeback trail

    Cricket

Some cricket news from overnight... Australia captain Michael Clarke has continued his push to prove his fitness ahead of the cricket World Cup by bowling a couple of overs and scoring 34 off 36 balls in a warm-up match against Bangladesh.

    Michael Clarke

The 33-year-old has until Australia's second match of the tournament - against Bangladesh on 21 Feb - to prove his fitness after surgery on a torn hamstring.

But despite his impressive comeback, Clarke said: "In my opinion, there's still a gap between where I am now and playing a one-day international for Australia."

  135. 'He was rubbish' - Lennon.

    Football

While Liverpool fans went home happy after last's FA Cup win, there was one man who really, really wasn't.

    Neil Lennon

"I thought the ref was rubbish," said Bolton boss Neil Lennon. "I thought he spoiled what was a very good game."

The referee in question, Roger East, awarded Bolton a contentious penalty, but angered Lennon by sending off midfielder Neil Danns with the Trotters 1-0 ahead. Liverpool won it with two late goals.

Lennon added: "The sending-off changed the game because I thought at 1-0, and with 11 men, we were OK. We were comfortable."

  136. Late drama at Bolton

    Football

Liverpool left it late last night but eventually found a way past Championship Bolton to move into the FA Cup fifth round.

Philippe Coutinho sealed victory with a magnificent stoppage time winner (watch it here - it really is a belter).

    Coutinho

It keeps Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, making his 700th appearance for the club, on course for a Wembley appearance on his 35th birthday on May 30 before he leaves the club for LA Galaxy.
