  11. Allen tips Kane to lead England linepublished at 11:20 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2015

    BBC Radio 5 live

Former Spurs and England striker Clive Allen knows a thing or two about playing up front on his own, having scored 49 goals for Tottenham in 1986-87. He told 5 live this morning that the current Spurs hot-shot Harry Kane could play a lone striking role for England.

"I think he should certainly be in the squad and I would be surprised if Roy Hodgson doesn't include him. I saw him walk through the door as a 16-year-old and had the pleasure of working with him for four years while I was on the staff. He was a fine young man, you could see he had a real desire to improve and the one thing I'd say - which unfortunately you don't say about a lot of young players - he had a passion for the game.

"It would be interesting to see how Roy Hodgson would use him, you could play him on his own with a five man midfield and Harry leading the line because I think that's his best position."

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert has been discussing his decision to drop striker Christian Benteke for Saturday's 2-1 home loss to Chelsea. Benteke had been leading the line for Villa during a six-match Premier League goal drought.

"It wasn't a hard decision to leave Christian out," said Lambert. "His form has dipped and that's by his own admission.

"I expect him to take it like any other player and fight to get back in the side. We shouldn't put everything on Christian though - it's not his sole responsibility to score, but his overall form wasn't up to the standard he can produce."

  14. Chris Ramsey QPR news conferencepublished at 11:11 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2015

"Somebody coming in now will to galvanise things if he is the right man. The fans will want to see a transparent procedure for the managerial role here and that's what's happening.

"I had nothing to do with the Mauro Zarate issue in the window - if he trains well and works hard he'll feature for us."

Staying with cricket and England seamer Chris Woakes hopes his 5-19 in the nine-wicket win against the West Indies in Sydney today will convince the selectors to give him the new ball for the team's opening World Cup match against Australia on Saturday.

"I'd like to think hopefully it is me," he said. "I've done it for roughly 10 games or so now. It would be nice to think that I will get the new ball.

The statistics alone are staggering: the all-time leading ODI wicket-taker, 10 five-wicket hauls, and 68 victims at an average of under 20 in 40 matches across five World Cups.
