    It was too late to 'hold the front page' and the Guardian website, external said: "An extraordinary chain of events at Leicester City on Sunday night culminated in the club issuing a statement to confirm that Nigel Pearson would remain in charge for the game at Arsenal, hours after the manager had been led to believe that he was losing his job.

    "It is understood that Pearson thought that he had gone at one point, and other staff at the club also believed that to be the case, only for the 51-year-old to be granted a reprieve later in the day."

    The Ivory Coast, featuring Manchester City duo Yaya Toure and Wilfried Bony, are the new Africa Cup of Nations champions, beating Ghana 9-8 on penalties.

    There were no goals in 120 minutes before goalkeeper Boubacar Barry saved and scored the crucial spot-kicks to give the Ivorians their second title. Their only other previous success also came on penalties against Ghana in 1992.

    England have beaten West Indies by nine wickets in their World Cup warm-up match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

    They bowled out the Windies for just 122 inside 30 overs with seamer Chris Woakes taking 5-19, and reached their target within 23 overs, Moeen Ali striking nine fours in 46 and Ian Bell unbeaten on 35.

    Australian Jason Day won the Farmers Insurance Open after a four-man sudden-death play-off at Torrey Pines.

    After Harris English and defending champion Scott Stallings bowed out when they could not make birdie at the first extra hole, Day, 27, claimed his third PGA Tour victory with a tap-in par putt at the next, the par three 16th, when JB Holmes took four.

    Leicester boss Nigel Pearson was in the news again, tangling with Crystal Palace James McArthur. After his touchline ban and fine for insulting a Leicester fan in December, there were reports he would be sacked for grappling with McArthur on the side of the pitch during Saturday's defeat by the Eagles but Leicester denied this.

    The bottom side travel to Arsenal on Tuesday night and Pearson's news conference from 14:30 this afternoon should be interesting.
