"Those who haven't packed a warm scarf might end up visiting street trader Colin Downes, who is perched on Market Street - the city's main shopping avenue.

"Colin, who like most Manc men of a similar age says he is named after City hero Colin Bell, tells me that trade has been brisk in the past few hours - meaning 'the cupboard is already a bit bare'.

Bach's upbeat comments came just 10 months after IOC vice-president John Coates described Brazil's organisation as the "worst ever".

That prompted the IOC to create a task force to more closely oversee preparations.

  9. Messi on a different levelpublished at 17:39 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Will Manchester City be a little scared of Lionel Messi and his vast bag of tricks and skills? Well, maybe a little if Samir Nasri's pre-match comments are anything to go by.

  10. Cellino not returning to Leedspublished at 17:36 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Leeds United president Massimo Cellino has announced he will not return to the club when his Football League ban ends in April in order to clear his name as an independent citizen.

The Italian was disqualified in January from having anything to do with the running of the club until 10 April.

At the time, the 58-year-old indicated he intended to return to Elland Road when his disqualification period ended.

"I will not do so," he said in a statement on the club website.

Cellino intends to appeal against the legality of his ban.

  11. Chelsea anger over FA's Matic decisionpublished at 17:34 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Despite getting Nemanja Matic back a game sooner, Chelsea have posted a statement on their website saying the club is "extremely disappointed and frustrated" the suspension has not been reduced to" the maximum extent permitted under FA rules".

    MourinhoImage source, Getty Images

"There has been universal condemnation of the reckless challenge made by Ashley Barnes on Matic and it is the club's view that he has been unjustly punished with a two-match ban for his reaction to a career-threatening tackle," said the statement, attributed to the Chelsea board.

"It is Chelsea's opinion that referees and the football authorities must do more to protect players at all levels of the game from dangerous challenges.

"This decision also clearly demonstrates a need for consistency and fairness in the disciplinary process."

  12. Matic ban reducedpublished at 17:30 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic's three-match ban for his red card against Burnley on Saturday, has been reduced by a game.

The FA announced its decision at a Independent Regulatory Commission hearing today, after Chelsea had appealed on the grounds that the ban was excessive.

Matic will miss Chelsea's next two games - the League Cup final against Tottenham at Wembley on Sunday and the Premier League match at West Ham.

But he will now be available for Chelsea's crucial Champions league last-16 tie with PSG on 11 March.

  13. Team-man Suarezpublished at 17:25 Greenwich Mean Time 24 February 2015

Much of the focus tonight will be on Luis Suarez, who looks set to play his first match in England since leaving Liverpool to join Barca in the summer.

The striker - who, lest we forget, finished last season as the Premier League's leading scorer by 10 clear goals - has claimed only seven goals in his first 22 games in Spain.

But despite that slightly underwhelming record, the Argentinean has established himself as a key member of the team.

Less goal machine, he has instead become a hard-working, selfless team player whose primary function is to service the considerable talents of his team-mates Lionel Messi and Neymar rather than find the back of the net himself - as his 12 assists for the season illustrate.

"I don't think there is a favourite," said Enrique, ahead of Tuesday's first leg at Etihad Stadium. "t is dangerous to speak of favourites in the Champions League - you have to demonstrate yourself on the field."

Barca beat City 4-1 on aggregate at the same stage last season.
