  2. Thompson targets Swindon swansongpublished at 18:51 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2015

Midfielder Louis Thompson is determined to recover from a shoulder injury in time to make a final appearance for hometown club Swindon Town.

The 20-year-old agreed a move to Norwich in January but was loaned back to Swindon for the remainder of the season.

However, a dislocated shoulder could prevent him playing for the League One side again this term.

"Maybe it's me being optimistic but I haven't ruled out playing at the end of the season," he told BBC Wiltshire. "The physio is doing his nut about that a little bit, but I'd like to think I can play at least some part.

"Even if it's 30 seconds on 3 May, I'll be happy with that."

  3. Microphones for football refs?published at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2015

    Rugby

Rugby Union referee, Nigel Owens, who was widely praised for how he handled England's latest Six Nations match, suggested microphones for referees in football would be beneficial.

He said it would be a "very interesting" development because it makes players watch their language and fans would be able to hear what football players "call referees".

Mr Owens said the most important aspect of refereeing sport to a high level is "control" of not only the rules, but the players, by being "authoritative and firm". Listen to Owens' comments on the BBC Radio 5 live website.

Ukthrylos: The current Liverpool side may not be good enough to make it through the Champions League qualifying rounds if they finish fourth; it may be best if they set a target of fifth or give it their best to win the FA Cup which also guarantees a Europa League group stage without any early summer matches to play. I can see Arsenal going second and Man Utd/Man City very close for third and fourth.

Tottenham's Ryan Mason has been called into the senior England squad for the first time.

Midfielder Mason, who has featured regularly for Spurs this season, has previously represented England at U19 and U20 level.

His call-up follows the withdrawal of Adam Lallana through injury.

  7. Phil's crystal ballpublished at 18:30 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2015

    Phil McNulty
    BBC chief football writer

"Predictions: Saturday, 4 April: Arsenal 2-1 Liverpool, Everton 1-1 Southampton, Manchester United 3-0 Aston Villa, Chelsea 2-1 Stoke City. Sunday, 5 April: Burnley 1-1 Tottenham Hotspur. Monday, 6 April: Crystal Palace 1-2 Manchester City

"Verdict: Arsenal's meeting with Liverpool is the big one here and so tough to call. I expect Arsenal to score against Liverpool and then it is a question of the Gunners being able to keep out Liverpool's flowing attacking football.

"I do not foresee too many problems for Manchester United or leaders Chelsea, at home to Aston Villa and Stoke City respectively - but Spurs will be tested at Burnley and Manchester City will have to show rather more steel than they exhibited away at Anfield and Turf Moor recently to justify the faith I've put in them."

Under the new FA proposals [see entry at 18:17 GMT]:

    • A player will have to have been registered with his club from the age of 15 - a drop from the current age of 18 - to qualify as 'home-grown'.

    • The minimum number of home-grown players in a club's first-team squad of 25 will increase from eight to 12, phased over four years from 2016.

    • At least two home-grown players must also be 'club-trained' players - defined as any player, irrespective of nationality, that has been registered for three years at their current club from the age of 15.

    • Only the best non-EU foreign players will be granted permission to play in England, with the process for dealing with appeals to be tightened.

FA chairman Greg Dyke has warned Premier League football is in danger of "having nothing to do with English people" as new proposals to limit the number of non-EU players are outlined by English football's governing body.

The FA has also revealed plans to toughen the rules on home-grown talent in the latest proposals from its commission, which was set up in 2013 to improve the England team.

The commission has also proposed changes to work permit rules having highlighted flaws in the system.

Speaking to the BBC's sports editor Dan Roan, Dyke said: "We don't want to stop the outstanding talent coming here, but there are an awful of bog-standard players as well."

Do you agree with this top-six prediction for the end of the season by BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty?

Hafijur: I highly doubt 2nd 3rd 4th will finish with that many points. Maybe one or two of the three teams will finish with that many. McNulty only predicted Chelsea to drop 2 points, Arsenal to drop 4 points, Man Utd to drop 5 points Man City to drop 8 points, Liverpool to drop 14 points, Southampton to drop 12 points. No Spurs to on the table. Most likely miles off with the predictions points wise.

  16. Skrtel charged by the FApublished at 17:45 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March 2015

In explaining Martin Skrtel's charge, the FA said in a statement:, external "In Premier League matches, if an incident has not been seen by the match officials, a three-man panel of former elite officials will be asked by The FA to review the footage independently of each other.

"They will then advise what, if any action, they believe the match referee should have taken had it been witnessed at the time.

"For an FA charge to follow, all three panel members must agree it is a sending-off offence. In this instance, the decision by the panel was unanimous."
