    In the women's competition at Indian Wells, Simona Halep beat Jelena Jankovic 2-6 7-5 6-4 in an enthralling final.

    Jankovic, 30, looked in control after winning the first set with three breaks of serve and breaking early in set two.

    But world number three Halep, 23, broke the Serb four times in a second set that saw six successive breaks.

    The decider was also dominated by breaks of serve with four in a row but Romanian Halep held at 3-3 and recorded the 18th break of the match to win it.

    Away from football and in tennis, world number one Novak Djokovic recovered from a second-set battle to beat Roger Federer 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 in the BNP Paribas Open final on Sunday.

    The Serb had dominated the opening set at Indian Wells but the Swiss rallied in the second set, coming from a break down to win the tie-break.

    Djokovic, 27, seemed rattled both by Federer and the crowd in the decider.

    But he regained his composure to win his 50th career title and his fourth Indian Wells crown.

    Back home and QPR's dwindling Premier League survival hopes took another knock on Sunday as Everton edged-out a 2-1 victory at Loftus Road.

    Aaron Lennon was the match-winner for the visitors, scoring his first goal for Everton since joining on loan from Tottenham.

    Right-back Seamus Coleman had put the Toffees ahead in the first half and QPR equalised through substitute Eduardo Vargas.

    Over in Spain meanwhile and Luis Suarez proved the match-winner for Barcelona as the Catalans beat Real Madrid 2-1 in a lively El Clasico at the Nou Camp last night.

    The Uruguay striker's neat side-foot finish came after Jeremy Mathieu and Cristiano Ronaldo had traded goals in the first half.

    Barcelona now have a four-point lead over Real at the top of La Liga.

    Chelsea sit six points clear at the top of the Premier League this morning, but they had to survive a bit of a scare against a spirited Hull City.

    Loic Remy was a true super sub as he scored with his first touch to give Jose Mourinho's men a 3-2 victory at the KC Stadium.

    Chelsea had raced in to a 2-0 lead after just nine minutes, but Hull fought back with two quick goals to level the game.

    Thibaut Courtois atoned for a first-half goalkeeping error to make three successive reflex saves when the game was level.

    The Liverpool captain, 34, due to join LA Galaxy at the end of the season, came on as a half-time substitute and was sent off for stamping on Manchester United's Ander Herrera.

    He is now set to miss three games.

    "I need to accept it; the decision was right. I've let down my team-mates and the fans. I take full responsibility," Gerrard told Sky Sports.
