    Gordon Strachan has included Dundee goalkeeper Scott Bain in the Scotland squad for the friendly with Qatar and the Euro 2016 Group D qualifier against the Republic of Ireland in June.

    Also in the 26-man squad are Stoke City midfielder Charlie Adam and Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths, both of whom have been in impressive form of late.

    Burnley midfielder Steven Reid has announced his retirement from football on Twitter.

    The 34-year-old made his first appearance at Millwall in 1998 and went on to play for Blackburn, QPR, West Brom and, most recently, the relegated Clarets, as well as making 23 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.

    Sunderland's Adam Johnson walked with his partner into court where he faced three offences of sexual activity with a girl under 16 and one of grooming.

    The 27-year-old, who held hands with Stacey Flounders as they arrived at Peterlee Magistrates' Court, was arrested in March after he was accused of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.

    The three counts of sexual activity with a child were said to have taken place on one night in January at two locations in County Durham while the meeting a child after sexual grooming offence was said to have happened between December and February.

    The case was sent to Durham Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on June 3.

    Johnson did not comment as he left court with Ms Flounders and was driven away in a Range Rover.

    Russian third seed Maria Sharapova came from a set down to beat Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 4-6 7-5 6-1 and win her third Italian Open title.

    Suarez Navarro, the world number 10, battled hard in the first two sets but ran out of energy in the decider.

    Her best chance came at 5-5 in the second set but Sharapova finished the set with eight straight points.

    The Russian capitalised on her opponent's weakness in the third set as she swept to a 35th career crown.

    Sunderland player Adam Johnson has been bailed to appear at Durham Crown Court on 3 June, 2015

    The England international winger appeared today at Peterlee Magistrates Court facing three charges of sexual activity with a child under the age of sixteen and one charge of grooming the girl, who was 15 at the time.

    His solicitor, Paul Morris, indicated Johnson will plead not guilty to the all the charges.

    Former Glamorgan fast bowler Simon Jones thinks England are "in a mess" and will "get hammered" by the Aussies.

    The Ashes series begins at Cardiff's Swalec Stadium on 8 July and Jones has described the current England set-up as "shambolic."

    "Where we are at the moment is not a good place - it's a mess," he said. "We have a lot of talent but if you haven't got guidance then you've got nothing."

    Paul Farbrace will be in temporary charge for the Test series against New Zealand - which starts on Thursday - after coach Peter Moores was sacked.

    Blackpool's Premier League promotion-winning team have shown their caring side by donating £5,500 to former coach Gary Parkinson.

    Parkinson, who played right-back for Middlesbrough and Preston during a lengthy career, suffered a stroke at the age of 42 during Blackpool's Premier League season, which left him paralysed from the neck down.

    At a dinner to celebrate five years since Pool's promotion to the top flight - and to try and raise £10,000 for Parkinson - an auction in the room raised almost £4,500.

    That prompted Charlie Adam - now at Stoke, but captain of Blackpool when the club went up - to take the stage and announce the players in the room would contribute the missing £5,500.
