It is the first triple hundred of Kevin Pietersen's career - and he bought up the mark in typical fashion, by smashing a huge six.

"Goodness me, that's gone miles," says the commentator on BBC London (listen here). "It's ended up in the middle tier of the stand. It's a huge six. There may be a delay here while we find the ball."

That takes KP to 311, and with no signs of stopping any time soon.

Surrey are 511-9. Can England ignore him after this? Unlikely, whatever the politics of the matter.

Oh my word. Kevin Pietersen is flying.

The batsman has just passed the 300 mark in Surrey's county championship match against Leicestershire.

He is on 304, from 349 balls, in an innings which has included 34 fours and - get this - 11 sixes.

The only problem is he's about to run out of partners. Surrey are on 500 for 9, with last man Matt Dunn keeping KP company. Block the best you can Dunny lad, and let KP carry on smashing.

Good news for Heather Watson - perhaps inspired by Andy Murray's clay-court heroics, the Brit has reached the second round of the Italian Open after easing past Roberta Vinci 6-3 6-1.

Watson, 22, broke her Italian opponent twice to claim the first set before comprehensively taking the second.

Britain's world number 41 Watson, who went out in the first round of the Madrid Open earlier this month, faces Kazakhstan's Zarina Diyas next.

    Spanish La Liga

And as we seem to be in Spanish mode at the moment - I've even donned a sombrero and am munching a paella - this is the latest on the strike that threatens to play havoc with the end of the season...

A Spanish court is likely to decide on Wednesday if the strike affecting the end of La Liga season is legal.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has suspended the end of the season and the players' union (AFE) also decided to strike in a row over TV rights.

The proposed action puts the final two rounds of league games in doubt, as well as the Copa del Rey final.

But, despite that domestic setback, coach Carlo Ancelotti is confident Real Madrid will reach the Champions League final if they repeat the performance of Saturday's 2-2 draw with Valencia.

The European champions trail 2-1 from the first leg against head coach Ancelotti's former club Juventus.

"We feel good and if we play like this on Wednesday then everything will go well," the Italian said.

Toni Kroos is expected to be fit despite coming off against Valencia and Paul Pogba is available for Juventus.

Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal says they can say "goodbye to the league" after slipping four points behind Barcelona with two games left.

Real came from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Valencia, but Barca's win over Real Sociedad has put them in control.

Carvajal said: "At home we couldn't slip up, we've done that and we say goodbye to the league.

"It's painful because we wanted to fight until the final day, although we'll keep on doing that."

  7. Middlesex extend lead at Hovepublished at 17:30 British Summer Time 11 May 2015

BBC London 94.9's Kevin Hand at Hove:

    Middlesex 269 & 102-5, Sussex 192

"Middlesex reached tea on day two at Hove on 102-5 in their second innings, leading by 179.

"Sussex were skittled for 192 just after lunch as the pitch continued to produce inconsistent bounce as the visitors were aided by cloud cover.

"The cracks on the pitch will only make batting more perilous and a target of more than 200 is going to be highly unlikely with run scoring extremely difficult to this stage."

And Kevin Pietersen has moved on to 258 not out, making this his highest ever score in first class cricket.

Can't wait for Andrew Strauss's first news conference as England's Director of Cricket on Tuesday...

The PFA has released the following statement about the allegations from Chesterfield captain Ian Evatt that he was "kicked, punched and spat at" by Preston fans after the play-off game at Deepdale on Sunday.

"Following an incident during the League One play-off semi-final between Preston North End and Chesterfield, the PFA has been in contact with PFA Chairman Ritchie Humphreys and Chesterfield captain Ian Evatt.

Evatt was allegedly "punched, kicked and spat on" by rival fans on the pitch. The Chesterfield captain has given a statement to police.

The Union is deeply concerned that a member has been attacked by fans and will work closely with Ian Evatt, Ritchie Humphreys and Chesterfield FC in order to offer our full support and guidance.

The PFA will continue to address this matter with the relevant bodies to try and ensure that this behaviour is eradicated from the game, before a player is seriously injured in a similar incident."

Jessica Ennis-Hill will only return to heptathlon action in Gotzis if she is fully ready, according to her coach.

The 29-year-old finished third in the 100m hurdles at the Great CityGames in Manchester on Saturday - her first race since July 2013.

Ennis-Hill had planned to compete in the Gotzis Hypo-Meeting in Austria on 30-31 May. But coach Toni Minichiello said she "had a bit of work to do" before a decision would be made.

Ennis-Hill had been out for almost two years after giving birth to son Reggie last July.

New Zealand wrapped up a 66-run victory over Somerset in their opening tour match despite an entertaining final-day hundred from James Hildreth.

Hildreth advanced from his overnight 62 to score 115 and lower order runs from Craig Overton (25) and Tim Groenewald (47) briefly raised hopes of an upset.

But off-spinner Mark Craig took the last three wickets to finish with 5-34 in Somerset's 277 all out.

New Zealand play England in two Tests later in May.

Gary Teale - St Mirren boss since December - says he can't understand why the club has announced it wants candidates to apply to become manager ... including Teale.

    gettyImage source, Getty Images

Interim boss Teale was unable to stop St Mirren from sliding out of the Scottish Premiership, at which point the club announced they would search for a new boss.

"I fully understand that they are going to open the process up to other applicants," said Teale. "But it's obviously frustrating because I'm in there doing the job right now and feel I'm doing the best I can in the circumstances."

In a statement St Mirren said: "We would expect Gary to put his name forward for the vacant manager's position and we will duly consider his application along with all others we receive."

    Warwickshire 264 & 321-8 dec, Worcestershire 149 & 22-0

Boyd Rankin hit his maiden first-class fifty for Warwickshire as his side set Worcestershire a huge fourth-innings target at Edgbaston.

Rankin put on an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 114 with Chris Wright, a record against Worcestershire, before the hosts declared on 321-8 at tea.

With little sign of rain in the forecast, the Pears will now have to bat for four sessions if they are to pull off a draw, or even a remarkable victory.
