  6. FAI claim Fifa paid them £3.6m

    Football

    Here is more on the claims that Fifa paid the Football Association of Ireland to stop legal action over Thierry Henry's handball in Ireland's World Cup play-off defeat by France in 2009.

    FAI chief executive John Delaney said the association believed it had a legal case against Fifa.

    A fee was then agreed to drop the claim, Delaney said, after Ireland missed the 2010 finals in South Africa.

    The fee was believed to be 5 million euros (£3.6m).

    Serena Williams will now face Lucie Safarova in the French Open final.

    Safarova describes reaching her first Rolland Garros final as a "dream come true" after defeating Ana Ivanovic 7-5 7-5. The Czech 28-year-old adds: "I still can't believe it.

    "I started a little slowly but I tried to keep up the level and started to play really aggressive because that was only the way to win. It's unbelievable."

    Serena Williams had looked unwell for most of this match, but she's pulled it out of the bag by winning 10 consecutive games.

    It's an emotional finish to the semi-final for her and her opponent Timea Bacsinszky.

    "I don't know how I did it. If I was going to lose, I didn't want to lose without a fight I just tried to find some energy form somewhere. I hope I will get better before Saturday. I am ill," says Serena.

    The Conference, the top division of non-league, has now officially been renamed the National League.

    And the Conference South and Conference North I hear you ask? Well, they will be the National League South and National League North, of course.

    The name change, announced in April, is effective as of today.

    Aguerooo is named for Martin Tyler's exquisitely timed commentary when striker Sergio Aguero secured the Premier League title for Manchester City in 2012.

    He was outside the top three in the 4.10 at Lingfield, in a race sponsored by Crystal Palace FC, oddly.

  16. Pendleton set for jockey debut

    Double Olympic cycling gold medallist Victoria Pendleton will begin her career as an amateur jockey on 2 July.

    The 34-year-old started training in March and will make her debut in the George Frewer Charity Race at Newbury.

    "The first time I sat on a race horse and didn't fall off was a relief, the first time I cantered on the gallops was exhilarating and the first time I jumped in the riding school and schooled over brush fences were hugely satisfying and exciting steps for me," she said.

  17. Oyston's FA charges

    Here's a bit more on Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston admitting to five FA charges.

    It is alleged the 47-year-old referred to supporter Stephen Smith as a "retard" in a text message exchange when the fan criticised him.

    The FA asked Oyston for his observations in January and issued a formal charge in March.

    Oyston admitted to five breaches of FA Rule E3 and a hearing has been scheduled for Tuesday.

  18. Wasilewski signs new Leicester deal

    Leicester City defender Marcin Wasilewski has signed a new 12-month deal with the option of a further year.

    Wasilewski, 34, joined in the summer of 2013 and played 28 games last season to help the Foxes avoid relegation from the Premier League.

  19. Oyston admits FA charges

    Blackpool chairman Karl Oyston has admitted five Football Association charges.

    An FA statement reads: "The charges arise from a text message exchange where Mr Oyston used abusive and/or insulting words towards a supporter of Blackpool FC, which were aggravated by a reference to disability."

    Oyston will face an FA hearing on 9 June.

    Departing Fifa president Sepp Blatter has released a statement. It's pretty straightforward considering the events of the last week.

    Blatter today had a meeting with Domenico Scala, the independent chairman of the audit and compliance committee, to discuss Fifa reforms.

    "I want a comprehensive programme of reform and I am very aware that only the Fifa Congress can pass these reforms. Furthermore, the Executive Committee has a particular duty to share the responsibility of driving this process," said Blatter.

  23. Dowie holds no grudges

    Liverpool and England striker Natasha Dowie says she has no hard feelings about being left out of the England squad for the Women's World Cup, which starts in Canada this weekend.

    Coach Mark Samson chose to leave out the 26-year-old former Women's Super League golden boot winner, who has scored five goals in 14 appearances for England.

    "I'm not bitter about it because deep down I felt that I've given everything I possibly could have," she said.

    England manager Mark Sampson says he expects all of his players to be fit for England's first match of the Women's World Cup.

    Sampson named a number of players who were recovering from injuries when he announced his squad last month.

    England start their campaign against France on 9 June - with all of their matches live on the the BBC.

    "We're in a great place in terms of the physical condition of the players, building towards that game," Sampson told BBC Radio 5 live.

  28. Fifa paid Irish $5m - Delaney

    Some astonishing revelations have been made by John Delaney, the chief executive of the Football Association of Ireland (FAI).

    Speaking to Irish broadcaster RTE, he claims that, in 2009, Fifa paid the FAI $5m (£3.25m) in compensation after Thierry Henry's handball goal caused Ireland to lose to France in a World Cup qualification play-off in Paris.

    Newly promoted Watford announce the signing of Lithuanian goalkeeper Giedrius Arlauskis, 27, who won the Romanian title with Steaua Bucharest in 2014-2015.

    Arlauskis has played in the Champions League and Europa League for Steaua, Rubin Kazan and Unirea Urziceni.

    He has 18 caps for Lithuania and played against England in a Euro 2016 qualifier at Wembley in March.

    Rogerio Ceni has become one of the top 10 all-time goalscorers for Brazilian club Sao Paulo - which is not bad for a goalkeeper.

    The 42-year-old - a penalty and free-kick expert - scored his 128th goal to beat Santos 3-2 on Wednesday.

    Liverpool's Mario Balotelli, Aston Villa's Gabriel Agbonlahor and West Ham's Andy Carroll are just three strikers yet to reach 128 goals.

  31. Qatar arrive for Scotland test

    Qatar have arrived in Edinburgh ahead of their controversial friendly match against Scotland on Friday.

    Their Uruguayan coach, Jose Daniel Carreno, says they are here to play a "very tough opponent" and to try and and improve with a view towards qualifying for the next World Cup.

    When asked about Qatar's hosting of the 2022 finals, he said he had no idea about the bidding process, or how the bid was won, saying he's just been in the country for six months. But he did say Qatar winning the bid wasn't a huge surprise, because Fifa have been "opening the map" on where they take the tournament.

  32. Cook to make Essex T20 appearance

    England captain Alastair Cook will make his first appearance of the summer for the Essex Eagles when he plays in Friday's T20 match against Surrey at the Oval.

    The England Test skipper, 30, last represented his county in the short form of the game in May last year. Cook is also due to play for Essex in their next County Championship home match against Derbyshire at Chelmsford starting on 14 June 14.

    Real Madrid have agreed a deal with PSG's 22-year-old midfielder Marco Verratti, according to Sky Italia.

    So, after saying he was taking a break from the game, Dick Advocaat is back at Sunderland as head coach on a one-year contract. It follows talks with Black Cats chairman Ellis Short and sporting director Lee Congerton.

    "After a lot of discussions with Ellis and Lee, they convinced me that I am the right man for the club," the 67-year-old tells Sunderland's website.

    "It was a great feeling to be part of Sunderland in the last few months, the experience was something very special and after talking with Lee, Ellis and of course my family, we all agree it is the right decision."

    So, the big transfer news of the day (aside from James Milner) is that the big transfer deadline has moved.

    The transfer window on 1 September will slam shut (it must always slam, it is never gently closed) at 17:00 BST, rather than the usual time of 23:00 BST.

    It's bad news for lovers of late-night drama and men in bright yellow ties.

    There are two reasons for the switch: 1. 31 August is a bank holiday. 2. Clubs need to submit their Champions League squads by 23:00 BST on 1 September.

    Super League's new marquee-player rule will widen the gap between the top five clubs and the rest, says Castleford chief executive Steve Gill.

    Clubs voted 8-4 in favour of introducing the rule, which will allow clubs to count only £100,000 of a nominated player's wage as part of their £1.8m salary cap from 2016. That rises to £175,000 if the player has not come through their own ranks.

    "I fully understand the need to retain our home talent," said Gill. "However I do feel as though we will end up with once again the top five clubs winning everything and the others just making up the numbers."

    Benfica coach Jorge Jesus, who secured the second Portuguese league title in a row for the Lisbon side last month, is poised to move across town to rivals Sporting after a salary dispute, local media said.

    Here's the full Liverpool statement after they reached agreement to sign Manchester City and England midfielder James Milner: "Liverpool Football Club are delighted to announce they have agreed a deal to sign Manchester City's James Milner, subject to a medical.

    "The Reds have agreed personal terms with the England international, who will join the club on a free transfer on July 1 after his contract at the Etihad Stadium has expired. Milner will arrive at Anfield having lifted two Barclays Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a League Cup during his five-year spell with City.

    "The 29-year-old is also firmly established as a regular for England and has notched 53 caps to date. Having also represented Leeds United, Newcastle United and Aston Villa, Milner has lined up against Liverpool 24 times in total during the course of his career."

  133. Franck Petricola dies in Isle of Man TT crash

    French rider Franck Petricola has died following an accident during a qualifying session on Wednesday at the Isle of Man TT Races. The 32-year-old was making his debut at the TT after recovering from a serious accident at last year's North West 200.

    The organisers of the event passed on "their deepest sympathy to Franck's family and friends". Petricola died at Sulby Crossroads, becoming the 141st fatality at the races since they began in 1907.

    New Derby County chairman Mel Morris says appointing former Chelsea, Paris St-Germain and Real Madrid assistant Paul Clement as boss was "pivotal" to the aim of becoming a sustainable Premier League team.

    Derby-born local businessman Morris, 59, was confirmed as Andy Appleby's replacement on Wednesday, but Appleby will continue as a director.

    England drop one place to 15th in the new Fifa rankings, while Wales also fall one place to 22nd. But there's good news for Scotland who climb two places to 28th. Northern Ireland are 44th, a fall of two places.

    The biggest surprise sees Belgium, who play Wales in a Euro 2016 qualifier next week, move above Argentine into second place - their highest-ever position since the launch of the world ranking.

    World champions Germany are still first with Brazil fifth. The team at the bottom of the rankings? Anguilla in the Caribbean.

    Former England captain Michael Vaughan says they have no chance of winning the Ashes unless they change their approach after losing to New Zealand at Headingley.

    "There is hope for the Ashes but Headingley was a blunt reminder that England have no chance if they try to fight aggressive teams by playing orthodox cricket," Vaughan tells the Daily Telegraph.

    "They have to be different, take risks with the bat and the lengths they bowl and just try to think differently by being a little unpredictable with the batting order."

    Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has joined up with the Wales squad ahead of the Euro 2016 qualifier with Belgium at Cardiff City Stadium on 12 June. Ramsey, 24, had been given a few days off following Arsenal's FA Cup final win over Aston Villa last Saturday.

    The rest of the Wales squad had assembled in Cardiff on Monday for the training camp. Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale is set to win his 50th Wales cap.

    Mihajlovic referenced Winston Churchill, Robin Williams and John F Kennedy as he resigned as Sampdoria boss after two seasons in charge at the weekend.

    Former top Fifa official Chuck Blazer has admitted that he and others on the executive committee agreed to accept bribes in connection with the choice of South Africa as 2010 World Cup hosts.

    The American said he also facilitated bribes over the 1998 event. The admissions come in a newly released transcript from a 2013 US hearing in which he pleads guilty to 10 charges.

    Triathlete Helen Jenkins says she withdrew from the European Games in order to aid her hopes of qualifying for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

    The Welsh athlete, 31, will miss the event in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 12-28 June because of an ankle injury.

    "It's best for me to get the training in and really focus on our selection races," Jenkins tells BBC Radio Wales Sport.

    Nearly 4,000 fans in all four professional divisions of English football took part. They were asked to rate transport links, turnstiles, stadium layout, food and drink, view of the pitch and security.

    Only 4% cited the likelihood of watching their team win as a reason for making an away trip.

    Rafael Benitez has been manager of Real Madrid for five minutes and already the gossip columns are full of what the former Chelsea and Liverpool boss might - or might not - do in the transfer market.

    According to the Daily Express, Manchester United have had an offer of £110m for Real Madrid's Wales international forward Gareth Bale, 25, and defender Raphael Varane, 22, rejected by the La Liga club.

    But the Sun says Real are confident of signing 24-year-old United goalkeeper David De Gea, who has one year left on his current contract, for £30m.
