"Sometimes money can't buy everything and that is going to be a very strong statement at Everton." Roberto Martinez has been fairly clear with his intentions regarding the possible departure of defender John Stones to Chelsea.
"This is not a moment when we can use any money to get us stronger... The situation with John is very clear. We care about him, we will protect him and make sure we give him everything we can to allow him to enjoy his football."
Everton fans, many of whom have been vocal about the lack of transfer activity at Goodison Park, may disagree with not using that cash more wisely to add some strength in depth. Many will also disagree with losing such a valuable asset as well, however.
Champions League play-off
Wayne Rooneyanswered his critics both on and off the pitch on Wednesday night following a sluggish start to the Premier League season.
After his hat-trick he told BT Sport: "To be honest, if I didn't have a strong character that [the criticism] might have affected me.
"I wasn't worried, if it was going on for three, four, five games more then maybe so but it's early days and I knew when the chances came I'd take them."
Louis van Gaal was also impressed, saying: "He has the best mentality that you can imagine. Such players with that level will always come back."
League Cup
Everton survived a major League Cup scare at Barnsley with two goals in extra time sending them through.
One big line to emerge from the match was the full 120 minutes played by Chelsea target John Stones.
The defender made an uncharacteristic error for Sam Winnall's opener as he appeared to step over the ball as the shot flew past.
Stones received a mixed reception from Everton's fans but he, and Roberto Martinez's side, came through unscathed and will face Reading in the third round.
Champions League play-off
Wayne Rooney buried three for Manchester United as they took a 0-4 win against Club Brugge in their Champions League play-off.
Ander Herrera added another but it was a rough night by Javier Hernandez, who missed a penalty due to a slip and wasted a late chance as he skied a shot from four yards out.
The draw now awaits for Louis van Gaal's side as they join Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City in an English quartet of teams.

The Independent
The Independent follows suit with Wayne Rooney's Champions League display and Danny Cipriani's Rugby World Cup dream coming to an end.
Manchester City's move for Wolfsburg playmaker Kevin de Bruyne is also there as a potential £58m deal appears to near for the both parties. Read more in our Gossip page.
The Times
The Times, like most of today's back pages, goes with Wayne Rooney's winning return to form on Wednesday night. Danny Cipriani's omission from England's Rugby World Cup plans also gets a nod, as does Zharnel Hughes' stunning 200m run to set up a final against Usain Bolt and Justin Gatlin today.
Pressure, what pressure? Wayne Rooneywasn't showing any last night as he confidently marched away with the match ball following his hat-trick in Manchester United's 4-0 win at Club Brugge...
... neither were England in the Women's Ashes as they took a seven-wicket T20 victory over Australia to keep the series alive.
... John Stones, on the other hand. Well, there's likely to be nothing but pressure on him between now and Tuesday when the transfer window closes. It could be over even quicker than that, such is the way of the footballing world.
