Murray's reward for victory is a second-round encounter with Frenchman Adrian Mannarino on Thursday.
US Open
Next to Andy Murray, who faced a real tricky start to his quest to win a second US Open title.
He was up against the fiery Australian Nick Kyrgios - a man not on Stan Wawrinka's Christmas card list - but emerged victorious from a pulsating encounter, winning came through 7-5 6-3 4-6 6-1.
"He's unpredictable," said Murray. "He can play all of the shots, he serves extremely well, he's a fantastic athlete, a big guy, covers the court extremely well. It's tough to get the ball out of his strike zone.
"It was a very tricky match and I just fought hard, mixed it up and managed to get through."

Even in this world of mega-money deals, some players are untouchable. As the dust settled on a hectic 48 hours at Old Trafford, a senior Manchester United source said the only thing that stopped their two-time player of the year David De Gea being in that category was the length of his contract.
Though no guarantees have been offered, it is anticipated De Gea will eventually be restored to his former status as Louis van Gaal's number one keeper. It is felt if any discontent has been created by the manager's refusal to pick the player so far this season, it is superficial and the relationship will soon be restored.
Around Old Trafford there is also quiet satisfaction that Real Madrid have not got their man - as they did with Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009 - although the club deny completely that they deliberately held the transfer up.

On the David De Gea front, Man United insist they were not at fault for the collapse of goalkeeper David De Gea's move to Real Madrid.
Real released a statement , external saying they did everything they could to complete the £29m deal of the 24-year-old, but missed the deadline by two minutes.
But United say , external they submitted all the paperwork two minutes before 23:00 BST.
De Gea, who is out of contract next year, has not played this season. Whether he now returns to the team remains to be seen ... United's next game is on Saturday September 12, a tasty one against Liverpool.
Here's a little look at what's going on today in the sporting world and when.

In response to the Berahino situation, here's the latest from West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace.
"We have a key player who has been very unsettled by antics which were designed to get him out of our club cheaply," said Peace.
"Those tactics have continued despite my making our position clear in my first conversation with Daniel Levy [Tottenham chairman] on this subject in mid-August.
"Saido has been unsettled to the point where our head coach has not felt able to select him for our last three games. We are now left with the task of repairing the damage created by this unfortunate episode."

This could be a tricky one for Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace to handle.
West Brom striker Saido Berahino has suggested he will never play for the club again under Peace, after the Baggies turned down a fourth bid for him from Tottenham.
Spurs had two transfer deadline day bids turned down for the 22-year-old.
Berahino tweeted: , external "Sad how I can't say exactly how the club has treated me, but I can officially say I will never play [for] Jeremy Peace."

So, turns out the biggest stories on transfer deadline day were the ones that didn't happen.
David de Gea was so desperate to go to Real Madrid that, as you'll see from the picture above, he even tried to walk there from Manchester. Alas, he'll have to do a U-turn and head back to Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Saido Berahino is even more cheesed off about the fact he'll be wearing a West Brom shirt this season. or will he? According to the lad himself, he might not...
